Would you know what the answer was if I asked you what a gonk is?!

My dc have just fallen about laughing, and assured me they've never heard of these. Maybe it's an age think. Anyone know what I mean?

@ThatDamnKrampus That's your conk!

AdaColeman · 06/12/2020 17:22

Gonks were soft toys, easy to make at home, a basic round shape dressed up.

The plastic/rubber things with brightly coloured hair were trolls

MiniTheMinx · 06/12/2020 17:22

I'm 70s baby, my aunt had wooden gonks from the 60s. It looks like a viking, but some of them had frizzy black mops for hair. They weren't especially cute or friendly looking.

spacegirl86 · 06/12/2020 17:23

I'm mid 30s and when we were in school the things you posted were v popular (I had loads) but they were definitely trolls. Made a resurgence recently with the new Justin timberlake film. Gonks I would probably say were the things other posters have put up pics of.

MrsT1405 · 06/12/2020 17:24

Yes, I knit one in the 60s.

Denthelp · 06/12/2020 17:24

Your picture is a Troll, not a Gonk. I love both!

SlopesOff · 06/12/2020 17:25

@MiniTheMinx

This is a gonk
That is a Viking troll.
iVampire · 06/12/2020 17:25

Gonks were more or less mandatory as team mascots on University Challenge in the 1970s

Whatthebloodyell · 06/12/2020 17:25

I still have my old trolls, and even one of my
Mums. My dd’s new trolls from the movie are grim in comparison.

PleasantVille · 06/12/2020 17:26

@Cloudhopping

This is what I remember as being a gonk. I’m 49.
That's one of the toys from BBC's Play School and most definitely not a gonk
ikltownofboothlehem · 06/12/2020 17:26

Yes, of course. I'm early 50s and it was a standard prize at Belle Vue fair in Manchester growing up.

Time40 · 06/12/2020 17:27

Those plastic troll-type things aren't what I think of as gonks. My gonks are fur creatures:

fussychica · 06/12/2020 17:28

Absolutely. Never had one except on the top of a pencil. I'm mid 60s.

Scumble · 06/12/2020 17:32

I'd have said troll for some of these - I had loads in the 90s (from Russ, I think?)

To us, a gonk was a little pompom with googly eyes on a ribbon.

1forAll74 · 06/12/2020 17:32

Yes, they were around in the 60's era. and some people found them quite cute. I once used the word gonk whilst playing scrabble, and family said it wasn't allowed, and that I made up the word,, that is until they checked it was allowed.

bluebellation · 06/12/2020 17:32

I was reading the first page of posts, inwardly screaming 'No, they're trolls. Gonks are big stuffed ovoid things' and finally @AzarinRed posted a picture. Phew, you youngsters know nothing Grin (I'm 66)

MondeoFan · 06/12/2020 17:36

Late 40s and I know
I won one at the fair

thenightsky · 06/12/2020 17:37

I had a gonk when I was a child in the 60s. He was the shape of a giant smartie and made of dark brown synthetic fur. He had orange felt arms and legs stuck on at 10pm, 2pm, 5pm and 7pm. He had googly plastic eyes glued on.

VQ1970 · 06/12/2020 17:39

@Brunt0n

Yes and they are so hideous and i’m sick of seeing them as Christmas decorations. I’m 31.
This is the one I had as a child in the 70s
Would you know what the answer was if I asked you what a gonk is?!
Cloudhopping · 06/12/2020 17:39

PleasantVille the picture I posted was of Humpty Dumpty from Playschool and I have believed for the last 49 years that she/he was definitely a gonk-please don’t tell me I’m wrong?

Cloudhopping · 06/12/2020 17:40

bluebellation I’m with you!

VQ1970 · 06/12/2020 17:40

Sorry @Brunt0n I didn't mean to tag you in my last message!

PragmaticPrinciple · 06/12/2020 17:43

OP: your photo is a troll.

Trolls were plastic with arms and legs, lots of coloured hair and came in mini and pencil top versions.

Gonks had round bodies, stuffed fabric or furry all over.

The more gnome like versions are more modern. The original gonks were not like that.
