Ok, so it's not quite a badly written shopping list but close. So retro! I found it in a book I bought from Amazon.

Interestingly, the date is the day I started my periods!

What were you up to in 1996? What is Mexicorn?

Asda still have the store manager's name on the receipt. Although without the formality of 'Mr'. Smile

Mexicorn reminds me of my mum being in hospital and my dad feeding us, this was wish we had ! I miss really cheap food, I used to ge able to feed us for £45 a week in 2008 now it’s £80+

CoronaBollox · 05/12/2020 16:45

I was 2, so probably destroying the house if my toddler is anything to go by.

elp30 · 05/12/2020 16:47

What an interesting find!

I moved to England from the US on a fiancée visa in late 1995 and married in February 1996.

I remember the first time I grocery shopped at the local ASDA the day after I arrived. I had no idea what anything was and I was so confused with the money. I remember the "international" aisle had pasta and sauces and a few Homepride jarred Indian sauces and chutney and that was about it. I'm glad so much has changed 😀

passthemustard · 05/12/2020 16:49

It was the day before my 19th birthday! Can't remember what I did for my birthday but I was working full time earning £10k pa and I thought I was rich 😂😂

I actually miss Beanfeast, the 'normal' flavoured one because it was the mainstay of my veggie cottage pies. They do still make it but it's the vile bolognese one only. Yes to whoever took it on their DofE - me too!

1996 25th October - the year before I met DH. Two weeks before a conference deadline that always falls in the first week of November so I would have been working on my submission for that (which got accepted but I didn't get to go, my boss did...) and enjoying finally living on my own in a flat in Harrow instead of lodging/sharing.

Cam2020 · 05/12/2020 16:51

Aw, I love finding things like this! I would have been 15 in 1996 in year 11 and having a blast. I also reme er bean feast from a stint of being a veggie in the early 90s!

You and I started our periods a month apart!

I’d just started a new senior school and was getting bullied Sad. I was 12, just getting into boys, music, clothes etc. I was newly obsessed with the Spice Girls and I can remember freaking out about having to figure out how kissing worked whilst listening to 2 becomes 1. Then I was trying to figure out how condoms and sex and blow jobs and everything worked and generally feeling a lot of pressure about sex which, looking back now really upsets me. Firstly...because I was TWELVE and I shouldn’t have been worrying about it (but thanks to being bullied by 12 year old porn obsessed boys who called me frigid and ugly, I was) and also because I ended up not going on my first date until I was close to 30 and was an extremely old virgin. Thanks to both the bullying and an abusive childhood which left me feeling unlovable Sad. I wish I could go back and bundle 12 year old me up in love and tell her all the good things about herself that she didn’t see.

Aside from the sad stuff life was all Impulse O2, Exclamation and CKOne, sticky lip gloss, trying to get away with makeup for school, Cadbury tasters and Fuse bars, and going to the cinema and McDonald’s on Saturdays in my Levi 501s and Caterpillar boots with new friends after early morning dance and music lessons. High Ponytails at the front of my head. Still occasionally getting my Barbies and Disney dolls out to play with when no one was around. I can’t actually remember getting rid of them but I must have. I was in love with Devon Sawa from Casper the Friendly Ghost lol. I can remember walking down the road next to school with my friends on a sunny day in our school uniforms having just been to the ice cream van, a parked car was blaring out Oasis, we all joined in singing Don’t Look Back in Anger...seems kind of an iconic moment now. I always get a little bit emotional watching Derry Girls because, although they are meant to be a few years older, my tween and teen days were very similar.

keeprocking · 05/12/2020 16:52

@AndIquote

Fig rolls, can you still get them?
Yes, oddly enough I noticed them the other day.
texelgirl · 05/12/2020 16:52

I was living in Germany then and having the best time, every night was party night, 50 phegs( about 20p) for a double vodka and coke or a pink polar bear

OutingMyDog · 05/12/2020 16:54

How funny, I live in Wivenhoe and I'm about to go to the co-op right now! Grin

OutingMyDog · 05/12/2020 16:55

I didn't live here in 1996 though. I was 17 and lived in Chelmsford.

CarinaMarina · 05/12/2020 16:57

I was 24, just split up with a long-term boyfriend and was throwing away a career/stressful job in financial services to go and work with horses.

I lived a couple of villages away from there! It was a pretty town, the bus route from my village to Colchester went through it. And past that co-op actually, if I'm remembering where it is correctly...

OutingMyDog · 05/12/2020 17:28

A 2020 Wivenhoe co-op receipt (a pretty boring one). They still have the same phone number.

I was 11 in 1996, leaving primary school. I remember it really well!

Benjispruce2 · 05/12/2020 17:38

Surprised how many young mumsnetters there are. Teen DD tells me it’s for middle aged women (like me at 49) so I’ll put her right.Grin

RosieLemonade · 05/12/2020 17:45

I was 5. Would have loved to have had my
Teenager or early 20s in the 90s though.

StCharlotte · 05/12/2020 17:48

Excellent find OP!

Young free and single living in my oen in flat in London (living the Mary Tyler-Moore dream). It was the summer of Euro 96 (I went to the footy home and away in the 90s) and the year of a memorable Ceefax holiday to Turkey which cost £109. Good times.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 05/12/2020 17:59

I know that co-op. I have a friend who gives directions to her house with reference to it. She has dogs

I remember October 1996 very well. A lot of time driving around trying to find a flat to move while DH started a new job.

OutingMyDog · 05/12/2020 18:14

I actually don't have a dog any more, so not me.

I should have looked out for Mexicorn!
