Ok, so it's not quite a badly written shopping list but close. So retro! I found it in a book I bought from Amazon.

Interestingly, the date is the day I started my periods!

What were you up to in 1996? What is Mexicorn?

I started Colchester VI Form in 1996.

Our secondary school Food Tech teacher made us make cottage pie with BeanFeast once. I quite liked it but then I also liked Pot Noodles so not the most discerning palate as a teen Grin

My step sister used to work at the Co op in Wivenhoe, but I think she may have left by then.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 05/12/2020 19:00

I'm very surprised at how little food prices have risen since then.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 05/12/2020 19:14

Is it Wih-ven-ho or Wy-ven-ho?

OutingMyDog · 05/12/2020 19:24

Wih-ven-ho

RosesAndHellebores · 05/12/2020 19:26

October 96 - DS was nearly 2. It was our skintest year as I gave up work because he was poorly. I recall lots of trips to Sainsbury pushing the buggy and weekly to baby music sessions.

I never bought Mexicorn. DH spent 2 months in the US in about 1990 and it put him off sweet corn forever.

olderthanyouthink · 06/12/2020 08:12

I'd just turned 1

Eww seeded grapes, so disappointing, when did seedless become the norm?

ChaToilLeam · 06/12/2020 08:14

I loved Mexicorn! 😋

olderthanyouthink · 06/12/2020 08:21

@HollysBush you can buy seeded grapes, they were the huge ones I picked up in excitement in once this year or last and I was to mad to bit them and hit seeds

BertieBotts · 06/12/2020 08:23

I was 8, it was after school, I was probably having dinner!

I thought that about the manager's name but apparently my comment didn't post.

It is still like that in Germany - feels very stuffy and formal and old fashioned here sometimes. I much prefer the first-name culture.

wellthatsunusual · 06/12/2020 08:25

I once had a conversation with a man who refused to eat seedless grapes on religious grounds. As a Christian he said he felt it was sinful to eat them due to the genetic engineering that had led to their existence.

At least he stood by his principles I guess. Did he eat bananas, the same is true of them.

I was starting second school in 1996. So in October was just towards the end of my first term. Thanks for posting op really interesting.

Aww. October 1996, I had just got engaged and was having aball living in London. We got married in December 1996 in Wandsworth registry office. Very happy times indeed, I was an accountant then and earning a bloody fortune. Still happily although we live on the other side of the world now! Have to admit I quite liked Mexicorn, it Beanfeast was disgusting stuff! And ww cheese was a fucking travesty.

SymbollocksInteractionism · 06/12/2020 08:33

October 1996 I was nearly 17. In my last year at school. Pubbing and clubbing every weekend.
I worked on a Saturday at a fruit shop/delicatessen. The 90's were great, take me back!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 06/12/2020 08:34

Happily married, I lost a word.

Valkadin · 06/12/2020 10:25

I was at University PT in 1996, I was also working FT, total hours were about 70 a week combined. I was earning about 15k a year and paying £30 a week not inc bills to live in a shared house in Birmingham.

I'm not sure, as it didn't come up in conversation. But to his credit, he was very principled and very consistent so I'm sure if he was aware of the banana issue he probably wouldn't have eaten them either.

He didn't watch TV or go to the cinema or anything like that. He just lived a life of quiet contemplation and education. He had umpteen degrees in various disciplines because all he did was church and study.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 06/12/2020 10:52

I love finding an old receipt and seeing the change in prices.

Circusoflove · 06/12/2020 11:03

I was at university. We did a £10 a week challenge where we had to try and feed ourselves for £10 a week each, thus freeing up more money to spend in pubs and clubs. The resulting diet was not great but I don’t think I really cared.

Food was comparatively expensive then. I read recently that U.K. supermarkets had the highest profit margins in the world back in the 90s and that’s why discounters like Aldi and Lidl were able to claim a large share of the market so easily.

fishykettles · 06/12/2020 12:30

When I was a student I could buy enough ready meals in M&S for a week for £10. I had a part time job paying £50 a week.

MostDisputesDieAndNoOneShoots · 06/12/2020 12:38

What’s more surprising is how much some thing haven’t gone up!

SBTLove · 06/12/2020 12:38

1996, DD1 was 3, lovely times before the other DC arrived 🤣

SadSecretSanta · 06/12/2020 12:39

I used to love Beanfeast! Can you still get it?

grafittiartist · 06/12/2020 13:42

Yep sadsecretsanta-
I think I found it in B and M recently. Might have been Heron.
It used to be only from health food shops didn't it!
