That sounds amazing TrickyD .

I went onto audible to buy some audio books for DS1 for Christmas (as requested), they had a sale on so I ended up with 12 books for £30. Mostly for him, some for me, some we'll both enjoy. He's currently listening to Mary Beard.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/12/2020 22:29

@TrickyD

I made a vegan Pavlova, using the liquid from a can of chickpeas. Family declared it to be indistinguishable from the egg white version, and delicious.
I've seen that done online, they called it 'aqua faba' which sounds a hell of a lot fancier than chickpea tin water. Grin What did you use as a cream substitute? I'm happy to hear that it does taste like Pavlova, my experience of vegan desserts is that when vegans say that it tastes the same as the butter/egg/cream version what they often really mean is that they've been vegan for so long that they've forgotten what butter/egg/cream tastes like. Millionaires Shortbread is particularly awful as the only ingredient that the vegan and normal version have in common is sugar.

Going to bed soon. Had some tinned smoked oysters. Very nice. My son just asked me to wake him at 8am (both twins have online law exams tomorrow morning (contract law) so we have two rooms set up as exam rooms and I will make the house quiet, warm, deal with any phone calls or the door so it can feel like exam conditions).

TrickyD · 13/12/2020 23:24

Yes, BlackAmericanoNoSugar, aquafaba is the same, it just means bean water.
Only one of us is vegan, the rest are used to real cream/butter etc. so they could judge without bias. I made it into a rectangle, and cut off the vegan’s share and she had coconut cream with hers, the rest of us had proper whipped cream.
I was very sceptical, it sounded most unlikely,. The bonus was that instead of having a few egg yolks to make into something which here means being kept in the fridge until they turn into a substance unknown to man, (and yes I know they could have been used for custard but who wants custard with a Pavlova?), I turned the chick peas into hummus.

Lemon curd pavlova sorts out the leftover yolk problem. You blend the lemon curd in with the cream, or some of it. Blackcurrant or raspberry curds work too.

Poor silkie chicken :(

mathanxiety · 14/12/2020 05:43

Sorry about Derek, Silkie. Hoping the others are ok.

We went out to buy a Christmas tree today, with me muttering that it was still a bit early. The Home Depot had fourteen scraggly trees left, each costing $59.99. So we set off home again and on the way spotted the usual cash-only tree stand manned by a few guys from the UP and descended on it. I'm not sure how we missed it on the outbound trip - we passed it without looking, possibly because we were all distracted by the new paint job on the nearby Italian beef restaurant. Anyway, we now have a tree sitting in its stand, and we're waiting for its branches to open out a little so we can decorate it.

Frownette · 14/12/2020 05:49

Home depot opens that early?

I need to find my boots and handbag soon as tescos opens at 6am

Frownette · 14/12/2020 05:50

Oh yeah and facemask

HelenaJustina · 14/12/2020 06:27

Crikey @Frownette that’s very early shipping on a Monday morning! DC’s isolation ends today thanks to the change from 14 to 10 days. However, as their school is still closed due to the high level of cases, they have no where to go!

Frownette · 14/12/2020 06:35

@HelenaJustina it's only 3 min walk away! Really quiet early.

These isolation times are a nightmare

HelenaJustina · 14/12/2020 06:38

I took preteen children shopping to Primark when it opened at 8am a couple of weekends ago - meant leaving the house at 7.25am on a Saturday but you are right - it is worth it for the quiet!

soddingkitten · 14/12/2020 07:37

I can hear my boys doing their school day morning routine to their usual timings. Their school has so many year groups isolating it has switched to online learning for the last few days of term. They’ll be ready far too early and should had a lie in.

If you don't already have the chickpeas, you can now buy aquafaba on its own.
SilkiesnowchicksandXmastreecat · 14/12/2020 08:47

DS is back at school today as isolation changed to 10 days. DS normally checks on the silkies each morning and gives them breakfast but today he didn't go Sad so DH went for a look and they are fine and had plenty of food and drink still. The new house is up a ladder and they haven't worked out how to use this ladder yet but they used one in the summer at the pet hotel so hopefully will get the hang of it.

Not sure why DS wouldn't go out, he didn't seem sad so it maybe as we've changed the house but it could also be he was nervous another wouldn't be alive, I was nervous too about that though other two appear fine and are eating and drink and outside fine. They are a bit muddy but run now is covered and no mud and plenty of grass but may need to try and give them a bath and keep them in the house until they are dry. It says online to hairdry them but think they would be terrified and far too cold to let them dry outside.

We also have signed contract for house sale and need to get that off this morning.

My Home Depot opens at 6:00 AM so that the contractors builders can get in and buy what they need before they go to their job site for the day.

According to NPR there's a national shortage of Christmas trees this year due to fewer being planted during the great recession in 2009. Prices are supposed to be way up. I'm glad we have our nice artificial tree, which we bought at Home Depot years ago.

I'm off to go running. There's snow in the forecast for today, then lots of snow coming Wednesday night into Thursday.

Another monday, another week... ! Nice run this morning- 1° and met another runner who overtook me and didn't say good morning or little wave or anything, it was dark and 6am, i was quite miffed as i'm always polite and am careful not to spook anyone out and about.. this is just being polite, right?!

Finished all christmas shopping for presents and stockings this weekend which is a relief.
making food lists to organise stuff in my head, looking forwars to the holidays but a super busy week ahead. I only need the 8 deliveries to come on time this week!!..

Whenever i cook my chickpeas as i buy them dried i always wonder if i should keep the magic cooking water.. but never have..

TrickyD · 14/12/2020 09:22

sueelleker, yes our vegan told us that, though she had never used it. I have never seen it, but I suppose Holland and Barrett might stock it, though chickpeas are always useful to have around.

TrickyD · 14/12/2020 09:26

Sheusedtobesomeonelse, while checking recipes I saw a reference to this, but it involved a lot of reducing.

Holothane · 14/12/2020 09:40

Bloods today then COVID test tomorrow I’m praying all negative, Christmas cake delivered tomorrow as well.

Sheusedtobesomeonelse · 14/12/2020 10:03

@TrickyD - I have no regrets then not keeping it!

Life is too short - though it is intriguing!

Nydj · 14/12/2020 10:23

@sproutsandparsnips, thank for the info on the Covid vaccine and apologies for not acknowledging it earlier.
@Holothane, fingers and toes crossed for you.
@TrickyD, do you have a stand mixer? I tried to whip up aqua faba a while back but only have electric whisk and got bored after about five minutes when they still hadn’t really started to bubble up. I’m glad your pavlova worked though.
I am listening to a webinar at work as I type this and have made a quick dash to Morrison’s before work to grab some Yarden hummus which is sooo smooth and tastes divine but not available for Morrison’s deliveries in our area. The chat is pretty chickpea focussed this morning Smile

Spudlet · 14/12/2020 10:55

Just back from the supermarket, although I didn’t get chickpeas. Did get several types of bean though. And some pants for DH, and some spare mittens for DS as he only has one pair and I’m just waiting for them to go into school never to be seen again...

Managed to get DS to write his Christmas cards through outright bribery with a lebkuchen from Aldi. Just hoping I haven’t forgotten anyone!

TrickyD · 14/12/2020 11:02

Nydj, yes I am the proud owner of a Kenwood KMix, courtesy of Amazon Lightning deals. Whipping the aquafaba was its first chance to show its paces. Even in the mixer it took a long time, at first I thought it would never work. I can see how you would be bored doing it with a hand mixer.
