So proud of the UK today

So, the UK is the first in the world to approve and roll out a Covid vaccination programme. (If another country had done this, say Germany, everyone would be going on about why can't we be as good as the Germans? Grin)

The UK had bought and tested a major amount of the right vaccine - it didn't get here by chance!

The UK Army (which really is world-class) is going to enable the largest vaccine programme ever.

It looks like a Brexit Deal is about to be struck.

And - next year, the UK will be banning the live export of animals. (We couldn't do that in the EU.)

Just feeling really good about the UK today Smile

It doesn't often happen, so I thought I would appreciate the moment Grin

If this govt had prepared better when we saw Italy and Spain going into covid meltdown instead of talking rubbish about hand washing to happy birthday and we will all be fine and dandy then perhaps I could say at least we tried. But we are the worst in Europe and so many people lost their lives because we were woefully under prepared. I am proud of everyone who stuck to the rules, gave up lots of freedoms to try to keep the NHS numbers down, proud of NHS workers and proud of scientists who have worked so hard to find a vaccine. Lets wait to see how they get on organising the distibution before I say I'm even remotely proud of anything this govt has done.
I'm certainly not proud of causing major economic mayhem to satisfy a few Tories with Brexit. I beleive David Cameron to be a complete and utter idiot and should be jailed for the econmic hardship this is going to bring.

Crankley · 03/12/2020 19:42

I agree with you OP but it's pointless posting about it on here which is mostly made up of Labour bots.

PerkingFaintly · 03/12/2020 19:45

This thread is hilarious.Grin

I reckon No 10's Nudge Unit have decided out there's a correlation between likely vaccine-refusers, and people who respond to mindless nationalism.

So they're branding the vaccine "Britain is Best".

It's just they got Williamson to start the ball rolling, and he's so crass and dim he couldn't push out the (admittedly nuts) message without sounding like a tit.

Greektome · 03/12/2020 19:45

So now we know who the jingoistic politicians are talking to, with their "Britain is the best country in the world" embarrassment.

Friendsoftheearth · 03/12/2020 19:46

I am so happy to be getting my life back, nothing and no one can change that feeling for me. This is the very best news ever, and I am already planning the mother of all parties in the summer, holidays - we have a chance to reset what we don't like/doesn't work any longer, and add only the joy back bit by bit. More home working, less commuting, more socialising in a casual spontaneous way. No need to plan endlessly. Living more for the moment. Knowing who I am so desperate to see, versus those that bring expectation and duty rather than joy.

You are right Brexit DID help with the vaccine, the UK was able to activate an EU emergency law I read about this today (the EU decided not to do do this) and they used a new brexit law to fast track the regulation - it has helped us no end. In a week or so the Oxford vaccine will be ready. It is going to make all the difference to the economy and people's lives and health.

mollscroll · 03/12/2020 19:46

I thought this was going to be about Keira Bell which also gives me reason to be proud.

Stellaris22 · 03/12/2020 19:47

Current deal and no deal are both as bad, maybe one is marginally better.

But to get to the point where we are arguing this deal is marginally better than no deal shows how incompetent this government has been. It's embarrassing and this deal is hardly worth voting for.

Whichever way you look at, this deal is going to make our lives a whole lot worse. We will have no rights or input on anything.

PerkingFaintly · 03/12/2020 19:48

BTW, I'm absolutely delighted about the vaccine.

Separately, I'm also very proud indeed of the work being done in the UK on the AZ vaccine, and of the scientists working on Covid, and actually also of the many, many ordinary people who have stepped up this year one way or another.

But proud of the UK for buying a vaccine? Er, no. It's the right thing to do, but not a special achievement for the country to be proud of.

Greektome · 03/12/2020 19:50

There's a deal?!

TheSandman · 03/12/2020 19:53

What makes an army world class?

Good question and how did the UK get ranked 8th? Is there some sort of committee somewhere who decides this sort of thing?

I think, to settle the matter in a fair and open manner, armies aught to get together every now and then and have some sort of willy-waving competition to see 'who's best'. We could call them oh I dunno... 'wars'?

(I'd lay money the UK don't get past the qualifying rounds.)

Greektome · 03/12/2020 19:53

No, there's no deal.
BBC a minute ago: "A breakthrough is still possible in the next few days but that prospect is receding."

tobee · 03/12/2020 19:54

Well I hope my Dh will still be able to get his life saving medication after Dec 31. And everyone else who needs medication . I'm not very hopeful.

The vaccine approval will has been a useful diversion. Difficult to be confident the roll out will go smoothly after other Johnson over promising under delivering cock ups. And any successful deployment at expense of what?

tobee · 03/12/2020 19:54

The key phrase there is EU emergency law. Any country in the EU could have approved the vaccine independently under that law. Brexit has nothing to do with it. Britain is still subject to EU rules until january.

According to [https://www.bbc.com/news/55163730], the chief executive of MHRA, Dr June Raine, said on Wednesday that "we have been able to authorise the supply of this vaccine using provisions under European law, which exist until 1 January".

derxa · 03/12/2020 20:17

"In intention, at any rate, the English intelligentsia are Europeanized. They take their cookery from Paris and their opinions from Moscow. In the general patriotism of the country they form a sort of island of dissident thought. England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse racing to suet puddings. It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during ‘God save the King’ than of stealing from a poor box." George Orwell

What a miserable lot of whingers on here, moan moan moan.

chomalungma · 03/12/2020 20:22

It's ranked 8th in the world

How do you rank an army?

Is there a points system?

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 03/12/2020 20:22

Greektome So now we know who the jingoistic politicians are talking to, with their "Britain is the best country in the world" embarrassment.

And there we have Gavin Williamson's bid for Foreign Secretary at the Cabinet re-shuffle. After all Johnson's personal experience means he wouldn't see the need for anybody skilful in international relations. What sort of knob would decide now is a sensible time to heckle the US and the EU?

By the way i'm no Labour bot, just someone who is fairly appalled at this particular Government. Of course we owe the scientists enormous thanks and the international effort has been amazing, its good that they achieved fast procurement and licencing of the vaccine (but should our politians be crowing about that to other countries?!) I hope the vaccine rollout goes well.

Stellaris22 · 03/12/2020 20:24

I mean, I think it's more than fair to complain and be rightly furious about the fiasco that is Brexit.

Unless you're one of the very few people who won't be negatively affected by what is going to happen.

Or should we be cheering and clapping?

chomalungma · 03/12/2020 20:26

@1stDecember

Still, I bet you read carefully through my posts to see if I had, in any way, said or hinted that the UK was "best" at something. And that's all you could come up with Grin
Na, I just looked at your first post. Grin

We are very good at biological sciences though.
Shame that's going to be affected by Brexit but hey....

It's not very complicated. Aspects such as manpower, firepower, equipment, budget and warheads get added up. We come 8th.

Everybody here is aware that Brexit has happened, yes? Saying over and over again that it's a bad idea isn't going to change that.

I still think a deal will be done. Even with LK saying hope is receding.

It's just a reminder that people how voted it for it now own it.
