So proud of the UK today

So, the UK is the first in the world to approve and roll out a Covid vaccination programme. (If another country had done this, say Germany, everyone would be going on about why can't we be as good as the Germans? Grin)

The UK had bought and tested a major amount of the right vaccine - it didn't get here by chance!

The UK Army (which really is world-class) is going to enable the largest vaccine programme ever.

It looks like a Brexit Deal is about to be struck.

And - next year, the UK will be banning the live export of animals. (We couldn't do that in the EU.)

Just feeling really good about the UK today Smile

It doesn't often happen, so I thought I would appreciate the moment Grin

If you're all just going to go on and on about Brexit being a bad idea, it's going to become a very dull thread.

@derxa

"In intention, at any rate, the English intelligentsia are Europeanized. They take their cookery from Paris and their opinions from Moscow. In the general patriotism of the country they form a sort of island of dissident thought. England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse racing to suet puddings. It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during ‘God save the King’ than of stealing from a poor box." George Orwell
As ever, George was right.

I am sure we will get the best deal though. Something to be proud of.

Bread & circuses
Possibly the worst ever use of that tired phrase Grin There are no current diversions, unless you think a vaccine is some sort entertainment for the masses? Confused

It's not very complicated. Aspects such as manpower, firepower, equipment, budget and warheads get added up. We come 8th.

So ranked in terms of size and weapons. Not necessarily the same as best.

Stellaris22 · 03/12/2020 20:48

Oh I'll be very proud when people can't afford or obtain fresh produce. Ecstatic.

Well the vaccine is a positive achievement that the Government are being victorious over (despite it being built on international effort). Delivering a Brexit deal has been a truly torturous process, not yet achieved, by the very same Government.

What would you like us to post OP? The lyrics to Rule Britannia?

maddiemookins16mum · 03/12/2020 20:52

It’s just a shame (shocking actually) we’re 5th in the world with Covid deaths. Certainly nothing to be proud of when the others ahead of us include India and Brazil.
But the vaccine is indeed fantastic.

It would be less tedious than "Brexit is bad" on a thread that isn't about Brexit per se.

Definitely not to be proud of, those statistics. But goodness, it's difficult on here to be happy about something!

Mind you, I was warned about that on page 1 Grin

You did mention Brexit. It's like catnip.

And yes - it is a good thing that we have the vaccine ready to go.

It's a shame though that Brexit is going to affect science co-operation, it's going to affect our universities.

1stDecember · 03/12/2020 20:58

We blocked reform on this whilst in the EU, we are currently proposing a consultation and the NFU oppose it!! also it affects just a few 1000 animals out of the millions slaughtered in some pretty shitty conditions in the UK, also does not address the animals transported over long distances in the UK (closure of local slaughterhouses, not enough vets!) the Eu ones have gone home

@Bluethrough None of which are reasons not to do it. And as you say, if/when it does go ahead it will be welcome - and maybe other countries will take note.

Lol! France comes out as 7th... you missed that out OP. even Italy is 12th.
Personally shocked and horrified by the cuts in naval power under the tories, less frigates than Japan.

Live animal exports to the EU may be addressed by super hi tarifs making uk exports to export for Europe, no deal is looking more likely after tonight's brief by the UK side.

giantangryrooster · 03/12/2020 21:09

Actually I've been waiting for BJ to make a brexit deal 'as the best Christmas present ever'. (He could have done that months and months ago).

I'm very jealous that you are getting the vaccine so soon, on the other hand I'm also greatful that you will be trying it out before we get it Smile(EU country).

But congrats that you are feeling positive, we all need that atm Smile.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 03/12/2020 21:12

Not really. GB is an island. Unlike most countries.

GB may be an island but it's not a country. It contains two countries and a principality. Otherwise, who won the World Cup in 1966?

OP, I'm glad that you're happy to English. I don't envy you.

Well we do have Trident.

The British Army has Trident submarines? Did anyone mention this to the Admiralty?

The difficulty is that your day of celebration coincides with being the day the UK became the first country in Europe to pass the 60,000 Covid deaths. It's wonderful we are a step closer to preventing further Covid deaths but, warts and all, I won't be glorifying Johnson's Government's 'success'.

Clue - Trident missiles

[ Bangs head on desk a few times.]

I know what kind of fecking warheads Trident Submarines carry.

How to explain?

okay...

Navy... Sea

Army... Land

Now... how many armies, do you think, have submarines?

Oh wait a minute...! Maybe that's why the British Army is only ranked only 8th!... The top seven have subs!

Well - that's obviously where our army is going wrong. If they had some submarines with nuclear warheads, then they'd be in the top 5 maybe Grin
