So proud of the UK today

So, the UK is the first in the world to approve and roll out a Covid vaccination programme. (If another country had done this, say Germany, everyone would be going on about why can't we be as good as the Germans? Grin)

The UK had bought and tested a major amount of the right vaccine - it didn't get here by chance!

The UK Army (which really is world-class) is going to enable the largest vaccine programme ever.

It looks like a Brexit Deal is about to be struck.

And - next year, the UK will be banning the live export of animals. (We couldn't do that in the EU.)

Just feeling really good about the UK today Smile

It doesn't often happen, so I thought I would appreciate the moment Grin

@TheSunIsStillShining

I am the opposite. Ashamed of what this country has become. Gathering of ignorant and stupid, individualistic morons. Yes, there are lovely people here, but they are the minority.

There is nothing to be proud of.
Vaccine: I'd rather the gov would have built confidence with not rushing it through at an insane pace. I'm still confident in it, but it feels like a publicity stunt nothing else.

vaccines2: great that it's approved, but rollout won't start for god knows how long, because that has been botched.

vaccine3: proud that uk gov could hit the buy button? Really? Seriously?

Uk army - world beating? thank god we are not in a position to find out. Might be true, but there is no evidence. It might be my ignorance, but I can't recall a UK-only army event. Joint UN stuff only.

brexit deal: god, you really believe it? Even if there is a deal the UK will be worse off because of the actual fact that we will no longer be in the EU. Nothing to celebrate about that. It's just not a million levles of crap but million-1 levels of crappy. yuhee

I have nothing to say about banning of live animal export as I don't even see the significance of this.

So, let's try again. why should anyone be proud to be a brit in 2020?

My Tory senses are tingling.

Yorkshiretolondon · 04/12/2020 19:50

Gavin is this you?

lemonsquashie · 04/12/2020 19:51

Britain has authorised the use of the vaccine first.

It's been produced by American-German pharmaceuticals

This has been rushed through for political reasons

Why should we be proud??)

lemonsquashie · 04/12/2020 19:53

This post feels like Tory propaganda

ivykaty44 · 04/12/2020 19:56

OP

can you explain to me how cattle are going to be slaughtered?

Im struggling to imagine how this is going to be done with just 250 slaughter houses in the UK in 2020 whereas there was 2000 in the early 1970s

how is this going to work - or not as the case maybe.

There are many reasons for the decline on slaughter houses including regulations and attracting staff etc, so how are the British public going to get British meat?

marktayloruk · 04/12/2020 19:56

Hope you're right.We could and should have banned live exports decades ago if not for the EU. Remainers care to.argue?

I think this is something to be proud of in 2020.

Isaidnomorecrisps · 04/12/2020 20:00

I think it’s Dave Cameron.

ivykaty44 · 04/12/2020 20:02

@derxa I don't understand farming, but I can't see how this is going to work? What is likely to happen in your opinion?

How would it have worked for farmers living close to borders if live exports had been banned by the EU?

user1471565182 · 04/12/2020 20:06

Ive just realised torys think this vaccine was made in the UK........

How can you ban live exports from Alsace to Germany, a few kilometers away?
How do dairy and breeding stock get from South Devon to France? or vice versa?

Are you suggesting a farmer in scotland cannot send animals to a farmer in Cornwall? because thats a hell of lot longer than going from Kent to France.
When F&M kicked off, it spread so rapidly because of live animal transport both to slaughter, for stock and to market, all within the UK.

We did not support greater animal welfare standards in the EU, which is why a lorry full of uk stock was found in kent, in appalling conditions without ever having been in mainland europe, all had to be put down.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/12/2020 20:12

Which Tory's think this vaccine was made in the UK? All of them?

Fucking hell, I'm mostly a Labour voter apart from a quick dip with the libdems - I have plenty of robust stuff to say about the government (search my name as far back as you like) but this kind of generalisation is pathetic.

I'm not an authority or expert. Here's a source

Bluethrough · 04/12/2020 20:20

@FourTeaFallOut

I looked up great british achievements, almost all 45 of them were centuries ago, the latest was Dolly the Sheep but this one caught my eye, so very british!

The toothbrush you are familiar with today was invented sometime between 1770 and 1780 by William Addis

The idea came to him whilst in jail for causing a riot

FourTeaFallOut · 04/12/2020 20:26

Was his next invention the shiv? Grin

Petronius16 · 04/12/2020 20:30

China gave details of Covid 19 to the world, Turkish immigrant couple working with a German Bio company produce a vaccine that is manufactured in Belgium, we pass it for use and take the credit. Neat, eh?

CrankyFrankie · 04/12/2020 20:43

Hahaha. Oh dear. Mother, is that you? I thought I’d confined you to Gransnet?

Justbrutallyhonest · 04/12/2020 20:46

I with the poster on the vaccine, I don’t get the animal export though, I assume you mean ‘for slaughter’ or you couldn’t sell animals alive.

But there’s no reason the UK could have been at the forefront of animal rights within the EU, or the OP reflect that the EU has been producing some of the toughest animal rights and regulations in the world and is indeed moving on this very issue.

Plus linked to this we are looking to throw away our high uk standard to allow the low chlorinated US chicken into Britain.

Bluethrough · 04/12/2020 21:00

@bendmeoverbackwards

What are they then? they are not accessible to all, my FiL needs a hernia op, 18 month waiting list, or £5k at the local bupa

@Bluethrough how does that compare with other countries out of interest?

I don't know how much private healthcare is in europe.
TeddybearBaby · 04/12/2020 21:03

Totally agree with you!!

Doods3 · 04/12/2020 21:21

@Ifailed

The UK Army (which really is world-class)

World-class at what - killing innocent people, tagging along with the Yanks in their doomed (and illegal) attempts to control other people, or matching round in fancy dress to tedious music?

Never heard anything more spot on
FancySomeChips · 04/12/2020 21:23

Only one thing you mentioned is anything to be happy and proud about.

The rest makes me ASHAMED to be British.

shamelesschocaholic · 04/12/2020 21:27

@MsTSwift

Your post goes against everything English people stand for. We never praise the government nor are we ever pleased with ourselves and certainly not with our government. Are you sure you’re not American?
Love this - made me laugh
