So proud of the UK today

So, the UK is the first in the world to approve and roll out a Covid vaccination programme. (If another country had done this, say Germany, everyone would be going on about why can't we be as good as the Germans? Grin)

The UK had bought and tested a major amount of the right vaccine - it didn't get here by chance!

The UK Army (which really is world-class) is going to enable the largest vaccine programme ever.

It looks like a Brexit Deal is about to be struck.

And - next year, the UK will be banning the live export of animals. (We couldn't do that in the EU.)

Just feeling really good about the UK today Smile

It doesn't often happen, so I thought I would appreciate the moment Grin

@Thelnebriati

I don't support the ban. I dont think people who do really understand the UK farming industry.
I don't think people understand farming at all. I breed sheep and we sell at Carlisle. Breeders come from all over the UK and from Ireland. One of our stock tups is Irish. In the 1920s my GF imported Friesian cows and bulls from Holland. These cows produced more milk than the traditional Ayrshires and Jerseys. If you object to this then you'd better be vegan or be prepared to pay a great deal more for milk or meat.
FourTeaFallOut · 04/12/2020 18:25

But I was replying the @HerculesMuligan who had said:

To simultaneously be happy that this has happened (discovery of Covid vaccines) and also happy about the prospect of Brexit seems slightly odd.

And I was saying that the op made no claims about being happy about Brexit and that she misrepresented her position.

How the Brexit negotiatons are panning out doesn't make that statement more or less true.

Bearhorn · 04/12/2020 18:26

@Cygne

You're proud to be in the country with the highest Covid death toll in Europe?
Tolls are irrelevant. Belgium, Spain and Italy all have higher death rates than the UK.
chomalungma · 04/12/2020 18:30

How the Brexit negotiatons are panning out doesn't make that statement more or less true

It also doesn't make my comment irrelevant about the fact that any optimism she may have about the Brexit deal might be short lived.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/12/2020 18:33

Again, entirely irrelevant to my point so why did you tag me?

chomalungma · 04/12/2020 18:36

@FourTeaFallOut

Again, entirely irrelevant to my point so why did you tag me?
You weren't tagged. You were quoted.

And I responded to your quote - with how she might feel about the deal at the moment.

chomalungma · 04/12/2020 18:37

@FourTeaFallOut

Again, entirely irrelevant to my point so why did you tag me?
You said she might be feeling positive about a Brexit deal.

I quoted that - and said that she might not be feeling so positive at the moment.

What's wrong with that?

FourTeaFallOut · 04/12/2020 18:39

So we agree, there's no reason to think that the op is happy about Brexit, right?

ListeningQuietly · 04/12/2020 18:40

The UK could be proud
IF
The researchers and companies and labs had all been in the UK, nationals of the UK and owned by UK companies
BUT
Vaccine production is an international endeavour based on free movement of people and knowledge

Something that the UK has actively chosen to separate itself from SadAngry

chomalungma · 04/12/2020 18:40

@FourTeaFallOut

So we agree, there's no reason to think that the op is happy about Brexit, right?
She might be. She might not.

But if she were happy about getting a Brexit deal, then she will be feeling less optimistic about that happening at the moment.

Lynnikins · 04/12/2020 18:42

We, the only thing the UK is doing with this vaccine is buying it...

This vaccine has nothing to do with the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine. It's a vaccine developed by a married Turkish-German couple (under company name BioNTech) in Europe which was heavily funded by US Pfizer money, and is being manufactured in Belgium. It is 90 - 95% effective, unlike the other vaccines.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/12/2020 18:42

"She might be.
She might not."

I'll take that as a yes then.

chomalungma · 04/12/2020 18:43

I'll take that as a yes then

You could always ask the OP Grin

ListeningQuietly · 04/12/2020 18:45

International transfers of livestock
If you live near Maastricht, its part of everyday farming
If you live in Northern Ireland its part of everyday farming
If the UK had engaged with the EU
it could have outlawed journeys over 5 hours - which would have effectively stopped the cross channel traffic
while still allowing farmers who live near open borders to operate sensibly
think about school catchments ,,,, sometimes the nearest and best is across a border
BUT
The UK never engaged properly
and the farmers who relied on that trade to break even
will now suffer

Lovaduck74 · 04/12/2020 18:46

@Biscusting

Just remember when you’re queuing up for your vaccine, that if the UK government had handled the crisis better, you wouldn’t be needing that vaccine at all.
Indeed
FelicisNox · 04/12/2020 18:46

Your comments on Brexit are way off judging by the news today: according to No 10 the talks have had to be restarted and the "chances of a breakthrough are receding" not to mention we will still be bound by red-tape even when we leave in regards to various laws such as fishing so I've no idea why you think otherwise?

The news on the vaccine is sketchy at best because currently because whilst the government is telling everyone they've "secured 350 million doses" only 800,000 (ish) are actually available with no date set for the rest and that's before we've even effectively tackled the logistics of deployment which are a massive headache at the moment.

I wouldn't get that party hat out just yet and it might be worth checking your information before going onto forums and touting your rose tinted opinion as fact.

Food for thought.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/12/2020 18:50

You could always ask the OP

I don't need to, I just think it is lazy to assume that someone thinks a certain thing (usually something that you object to) on account of them disagreeing about another totally unrelated thing?

The op only raised both issues because both were prominent in the news on the same night.

If you want to accuse her of being too optimistic, knock yourself out. But optimists live longer, just saying.

JFM27 · 04/12/2020 18:57

Proud of Uk. How can anyone be proud of Uk.We didnt create vaccine, or produce it.We j
just bought supplies possibly because we think Brexit might muck up supply chain.

Surely noone can be proud of a country,run by a load of lying shysters like our present government.They have totally mishandled the whole virus situation,dragged us out of EU on false pretences,and with no proper plan except to make their friends richer and they care little for the Uk. Personally i think they should all be arrested for fraud,as they have defrauded the British people for four years with their lies and giving contracts and jobs to Tory doners and their Tory mates who have made fortunes out of it.

Sadky UK at moment has very little to make me proud of it,im ashamed to be British,especially English.

You must walk around with a permanent black cloud over your head. How depressing.
FreshFreesias · 04/12/2020 19:01

It will be fantastic if we actually ban live export. Is this really on the cards? 🥳

ListeningQuietly · 04/12/2020 19:10

@FreshFreesias

Ask yourself why it happened and what will happen to those animals otherwise and the farmers who raised them ....

all is nuance

earnshaw47 · 04/12/2020 19:25

i too am proud of our country, even if we hadnt done anything super brilliant, i think we should feel proud and patriotic, there is so much negativity around that its so nice to just feel a bit positive, it has been difficult to feel that way because of all the boris bashing etc, i think that if we all had done as we should , masks , social distancing etc rather than doing as they like, the I`m all right Jack way, ,, things would have been so much better so lets stop blaming the government, sure they have made mistakes but dont forget , they are trying to deal with something so enormous and daunting, ,mistakes are bound to be made, maybe we should take a little bit of the blame ourselves instead of blaming others

Jason118 · 04/12/2020 19:40

Still don't get why we should feel proud of a country? Happy to live in one, pleased with an outcome, appreciative of skilful governance, amazed at people's abilities, I can see all that, but how this translates to pride is completely beyond me.

sashagabadon · 04/12/2020 19:45

Brits are volunteers for loads of the vaccine trials including the Pfizer one plus loads more. There are loads of threads from Mumsnetters on vaccine trials and not just the Oxford and imperial ones. There’s another one recruiting for volunteers right now in my hospital. My parents have a friend in his 70’s on the Pfizer trial based in London.
TheSunIsStillShining · 04/12/2020 19:46

I am the opposite. Ashamed of what this country has become. Gathering of ignorant and stupid, individualistic morons. Yes, there are lovely people here, but they are the minority.

There is nothing to be proud of.
Vaccine: I'd rather the gov would have built confidence with not rushing it through at an insane pace. I'm still confident in it, but it feels like a publicity stunt nothing else.

vaccines2: great that it's approved, but rollout won't start for god knows how long, because that has been botched.

vaccine3: proud that uk gov could hit the buy button? Really? Seriously?

Uk army - world beating? thank god we are not in a position to find out. Might be true, but there is no evidence. It might be my ignorance, but I can't recall a UK-only army event. Joint UN stuff only.

brexit deal: god, you really believe it? Even if there is a deal the UK will be worse off because of the actual fact that we will no longer be in the EU. Nothing to celebrate about that. It's just not a million levles of crap but million-1 levels of crappy. yuhee

I have nothing to say about banning of live animal export as I don't even see the significance of this.

So, let's try again. why should anyone be proud to be a brit in 2020?
