One packet of Angel Delight is four servings?!

I’m flabbergasted. Just treating myself to some Banana Angel Delight as you do and noticed when made up it’s meant to serve four people! Unless it means four kids , cos I appreciate it’s probably not aimed at my age group, but all the same.. Is that right or am I just greedy?

Don’t you still get dream topping in the trifle making kits?

Lavenderfieldsofprovence · 02/12/2020 19:51

We used to have this as children. It was served between five of us!

SlipperTripper · 02/12/2020 20:32

@Sparklingbrook one mini pack of standard strawb, one mini pack of darker pink strawb WITH BITS IN (much excitement), a mini pack of creamy topping, and sprinkles 😊

Needed bulking out, and a sneaky squizz of squirty cream on top to create the look that was was on the packet. Very exciting though.

During a pandemic you have to get your excitement where you can. Sounds ok. Grin

My dd was disgusted to find out 1 of those mini doughnut is a serving.

FatGirlShrinking · 02/12/2020 20:41

We were a family of 2 adults and 3 kids. Angel delight was always one pack of strawberry as the bottom layer, 1 pack of chocolate as the top layer and a pack of maltesars for decoration.

LindaEllen · 02/12/2020 20:55

Ha, no way. One pack = one portion. I refuse to read the packet if it says otherwise!

Pack of butterscotch angel delight with a layer of bashed up Flake on top of it. Perfecto!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 02/12/2020 21:00

I miss Angel Delight! I can't eat it because it's got lactose in it Sad
Butterscotch is the best one. I'd have liked to try the buttermint flavour they used to have.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/12/2020 22:05

Ahh, Wednesday afternoons in halls. Down to the student shop for a bottle of milk and a packet of Angel Delight... EACH.
Mix it up in a bowl, time it with teaspoon poised ready for the glorious moment... and scoff.

I was rather lean then too Grin

Shame the recipe changed and I developed lactose intolerance!

BecomeStronger · 02/12/2020 22:07

I haven't had it since I was a teenager child but definitely one packet was for 2 adults, 2 children then. I don't remember the portions seeming stingy.

You can buy dream topping on its own, I love it.

Mumdiva99 · 02/12/2020 22:21

@Sparklingbrook I have one of those waiting to be eaten. Dd spotted it yesterday and was desperate to make it....but it was her birthday today and we had cake. So it will be our weekend treat. ..... I might need to get squirty cream as suggested.

2 packets of Angel Delight serve 5 for pudding. Or 1 pack with tinned fruit serves 4. I always have tinned fruit - not fresh with it....no idea why. Maybe i fear fresh fruit would amplify the 'artificialness' of the angel delight!!

RoseAndRose · 02/12/2020 22:21

Does Instant Whip still exist?

Shut the front door! immediately adds it to my Asda order
BarbaraofSeville · 03/12/2020 09:11

That unicorn thing looks similar to Birds Trifle.

I recently discovered that double cream whipped up with vanilla and icing sugar (from some Nadiya Hussein baking recipe) tastes exactly like I remember Dream Topping tasting like, which is conflicting.

Do I have false memories of dream topping, or is it an excellent product that replicates the real thing at a fraction of the cost and calories?

BarbaraofSeville · 03/12/2020 09:13

Or if you love dream topping but run away screaming from the ingredients list, you can make your own with a tub of double cream, and some vanilla essence and icing sugar, all whipped up together.

MrsGrindah · 03/12/2020 10:31

@Countdowntonothing I did wonder that, but then surely I’m not really getting more pudding just more air!

Anyway, it’s all irrelevant now cos I’ve eaten it all! DH didn’t have any in the end so guess what breaks at was?! I pretended I was Nigella and ate it by the fridge, in my dressing gown.

The olden days when obesity wasn’t rife?
MrsGrindah · 03/12/2020 11:15

@viques Well it’s all relative isn’t it? You can have a large portion of Angel Delight as part of a balanced diet.

"The olden days when obesity wasn’t rife?"

🙄

EdithWeston · 03/12/2020 13:59

The proportion of the population that was overweight or obese was much lower in the 1979s. - about 3.5% compared to over 40% now

(This BBC article is 10 years old news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8004257.stm and if anything its worsened since then)

Perceptions of what a portion size should be is one of the factors in an obesogenic society

Deathraystare · 03/12/2020 14:13

I know - we used to stretch it to five servings (ok we used 2 packs - always one butterscotch and one banana!)

MrsGrindah · 03/12/2020 15:09

Oh Jesus . We don’t need lectures on obesity. It’s a lighthearted thread about a desert!

Sparklingbrook · 03/12/2020 15:11

Well I have been to the supermarket and bought two packs of Butterscotch Angel delight and a bunch of bananas and it's all your fault @MrsGrindah. I even bought full fat milk as we only have skimmed and it wouldn't do. Grin
