I've been watching The Keepers on Netflix and it has brought up some uncomfortable memories of the deputy head in my secondary school 30 years ago. Strange situations, inappropriate comments, rumours of him having " relationships " with students.
Im still in contact with a couple of classmates who agreed.
I'm just wondering how common place this was ?
Funnily tho at the time we all laughed it off.

As far as I know, all my teachers were upright characters, never heard any rumours or witnessed anything inappropriate.

Otoh 2 of my son's secondary teachers were sacked for child porn use and inappropriate behaviour around their pupils, one of my dd's sixth form teachers for inappropriate language and touching of drama students. Dd was actively involved in reporting her teacher, ds was interviewed over one of his teachers but had little to say, thankfully.

Two different schools involved. The secondary was criticised at the time for taking way too long to react over parental concerns (we're talking years here), sixth form college otoh were very much on the ball. There was never any doubt- plenty of witnesses and clear evidence.

Yes, a music teacher had an affair with a sixth former and both left in disgrace.

StumpedOnceMore · 30/11/2020 11:10

I remember this sort of thing going on at youth club. The horrible creepy men knew which girls to target. The ones with a very complicated home life. (Maybe neglected I mean.)
They disgusted me.

I thought the series was very good but upsetting. The opening credits were brilliant and haunting.

MajorMujer · 30/11/2020 11:16

@StumpedOnceMore this all happened around the time of my grandmother's death when I was 15 - it was a sudden death and I was at school so was informed by this teacher.

We had several: one (at lower school - years 7/8) who carried a plimsoll in his back pocket and took boys who misbehaved in class into the changing rooms to spank their bare bottoms; one who was forever keeping girls behind after class and dropping his pen for them to bend over and pick up; and two who were having a very ill-concealed affair and were frequently seen steaming up their car windows in the pub car-park around the corner from the school at lunchtime. Only the first of these was sacked.

Thinkingg · 30/11/2020 11:18

Poor sixth former, @HmmSureJan :(

LagneyandCasey · 30/11/2020 11:25

A male teacher at my school was touchy feely with the girls. He ran the oversees trips and would just walk into girls rooms etc. Nothing physical happened to me but I remember him asking if I enjoyed snogging my boyfriend Hmm. A friend of mine said he touched her bum a few times. This was mid 80s and no one seemed bothered by it and scarily we all found it quite lighthearted and funny at the time Shock. I hope no one was badly affected by anything he did Sad

phoebeorphoebo · 30/11/2020 11:25

Not a teacher but a young carer’s support worker . Made crude jokes about sex, sex toys, and was too ‘grabby’ - I have a few photos of him cuddling me .

I was sixteen or seventeen, I can’t remember, most of the other service users were twelve or thirteen . He was old and grey .

Look back now wondering what the hell was going there .

MajorMujer · 30/11/2020 11:25

The thing that I find very strange is that other adults in the school were aware of something going on. For example my best friends neighbour ran the school office and had pulled best friend aside and said that if she was ever called to this teachers office by herself she was to go and find her neighbour first and the neighbour would accompany her !

*going on

HmmSureJan · 30/11/2020 11:28

@Thinkingg I know. I was amongst the youngest in the school so at the time both of them seemed very grown up to me but of course she wasn't at all. This was the early eighties though when it was usually considered to be the girl or woman's fault Angry

CaraDuneRedux · 30/11/2020 11:30

@StumpedOnceMore I remember similar from a youth activity (along the lines of theatre society - not but similar).

Guy in charge in his late 40s openly having a "relationship" with a girl of 6th form age, more junior members of staff getting up to all sorts with younger teens on residential courses. Bleurgh.

Almostslimjim · 30/11/2020 11:33

We may have gone to the same school...
HmmSureJan · 30/11/2020 11:35

@Almostslimjim was it in West Sussex?

Alexandernevermind · 30/11/2020 11:36

We had a popular male teacher at primary school. He set up an art club for the year 6's and I went along. I just remember it being a bit odd, with a group of the 'cool girls' at the front giggling and chatting to him. Not a paint brush in sight. I didn't bother going again. There were rumours that if you touched him he would give you a chocolate bar Sad. Years later my DS reconnected with her old BF there, apparently she had been in therapy because he had abused her. A girl in my year had also accused him of abuse but no one believed her. She died of a drug overdose in her 20's.

Hesnotlocal · 30/11/2020 11:37

We had a small group of teachers who acted very inappropriately when I was in 6th form. The female head of 6th form (in her 30s) was (in her own words) 'very close friends' with some of the girls in the upper 6th and also close friends with 2 male teachers (also in their 30s). The girls were (unofficially) given their own common room in a small classroom that they had the key to and spent lots of time at evenings and weekends with the head of 6th form and her friends- including parties and sleepovers. There were rumours of relationships between some of the girls and the 2 male teachers but as far as I know these were never investigated by the school. I'm fairly sure the rumours were tried- not least because just a year or so later one of the girls came back to work at the school and was openly in a relationship with the male teacher she'd been rumoured to be seeing when at school.

At the time the rest of us thought it was a bit odd and sad to be hanging round with the teachers but looking back it was really inappropriate and I can't believe it was allowed to go on so blatantly and without question from the school or the girls' parents.

HmmSureJan · 30/11/2020 11:41

Also at another school there was a very young geography teacher - a woman and she used to openly giggle and flirt with one or two of the boys - 15/16 age group. You'd see the expression and her whole demeanour change as she turned her attention to the girls. Once one of the more confident girls pointed this out to her and actually said "what's the point in asking you, you're only interested in talking to the boys anyway" she looked visibly shocked and was a bit better after that.

Alexandernevermind · 30/11/2020 11:44

Thinking about it, the girls he chose were the ones who were always in trouble in class, difficult home lives etc.
It all came out and he was interviewed by the police probably 6 years later. He hung himself before it went to court.

MeowMeowLikeACow · 30/11/2020 11:45

Science teacher at my secondary school, he was maybe in his 40s? Started an affair with my friend's 14 year old sister. My friend found the letters he wrote to her and showed me, it was grim. He was forced to leave his job but I don't think any action was taken. He left his wife and when the girl was about 18 they had a baby together. Grim.

pumpkinpie01 · 30/11/2020 11:47

At our school there was rumours the female teacher was seeing a 15 year old lad. He never admitted to anything but she lived next door to my dads friend so I knew he was definitely going round there. When he left school they both moved hundreds of miles away together and he was a parent to 2 kids by her by the time he was 18.

MushMonster · 30/11/2020 11:52

We had one in our high school who rumours were he was dating an student. He was married, apparently with a baby.
He was not cringy, but he was the PE teacher. So I watched him closely indeed, just in case!
I never knew whether the rumours were true.

GaraMedouar · 30/11/2020 12:00

@Almostslimjim and @HmmSureJan - had exactly the same at my school - not West Sussex - was South London ! It was in the eighties.

MajorMujer · 30/11/2020 12:04

This teacher was older, 50s probably.
