Feeling a bit nostalgic today I will start- every good shopping trip would involve a visit to Bay Trading and Snob

Buttybach · 30/11/2020 02:20

We had bejam (before Iceland)
Safeway
Kwik save
National milk bar cafes

Also sweater shop
The sock shop
I have a really vivid memory of going to the BOY London store in London in Sloane Square and wanting to live my best Madonna life.
We also went to peter jones (precursor to John Lewis)
Also we went to the Vivienne Westwood shop on kings rd and watching the punks in the late 90s

swingyourpants79 · 30/11/2020 03:03

I had sweat boots and buffalos like Mel b! 😂

rustykettle · 30/11/2020 10:43

Brummie here! Oh the Midland Ed! That's what my parents called it, it was years before I discovered what the Ed meant!

rustykettle · 30/11/2020 10:44

And Birmingham cafés... highlights for me were BHS and Kardomah on Colmore Row.

rustykettle · 30/11/2020 10:46

Trueform and Manfield shoe shops, loved them.

wetasstenalady · 30/11/2020 10:52

@Madhairday do you remember the little shops in the old bullring that sold fire hazard clothes for a fiver a piece? Think one was called hypnotic

I am so pleased people remember Oasis market in Birmingham!

Saturday morning as follows-50 bus into Birmingham, it stopped by the clock. Or the train to Moor St.
Into Reddingtons Rare Records then off to the Bull ring where all the Duran Duran badges were sold.
Then Oasis market to get that one off piece of clothing nobody else would have. Then into Virgin to listen to stuff on headphones and maybe a Wimpy at some point.
That may be a mix of a lot of years of the 80s but it was before the Pallasades came along and they messed with Broad St and knocked the Rum Runner down etc. Happy days.

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2020 11:43

Oh and any meeting up would be at the clock opposite M&S. Grin

ItsALovelyDayToday · 30/11/2020 12:19

Paco jumpers, anyone?

80s/90s shops
Woahisme · 30/11/2020 18:47

@Buttybach was Tommy Ball's a northern thing? We had one in Preston

Madhairday · 30/11/2020 18:58

@wetasstenalady yes! I remember those and these really crowded shops full of what are now obviously knock off goods all piled up in huge messy piles, a.fire hazard in themselves.
I remember Broad Street before gentrification too, all those warehouses with shattered windows.
Do you remember the subway bit next to Rackhams which had little stalls in it selling badges and cheap wrapping paper and loads of other things?
Birmingham was such a (slightly dodgy) treasure trove in the 80s.

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2020 19:01

Birmingham was such a (slightly dodgy) treasure trove in the 80s.

It really was. I went back for a quick trip last year and it really doesn't have the same appeal any more, plus I am old. Sad

MrsShelton · 30/11/2020 20:09

have all the 7 eleven shops around London gone?

Alrightnow · 30/11/2020 20:14

West one

wetasstenalady · 30/11/2020 20:37

@Madhairday yes I loved getting my wrapping paper from there!

Mark One and Lemonjuice

@Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin

I’ll add coppernob, I loved their clothes and was gutted when they closed.
Gifi Fields who owns Coppernob now owns Scarlett and Jo label. I used to work in River Island head office and he was one of our suppliers. Chelsea Girl became River Island but they kept the last shop in the Bullring as CG and sent all the unsold sale stock there.
fridaleavethetweezers · 17/12/2020 21:23

@Milomonster

Red or Dead
Loved Red or Dead so much I did work experience at their Wembley office and their PR in Soho. Just after the space baby collection.
TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 17/12/2020 21:34

I loved the Pier! My Mum bought me some gorgeous pasta bowls from there that I had coveted for years. But my ex was a clumsy fucker and broke them all :(

I remember Punky Fish, I saved up for months to buy a hoody. I probably still have it Grin
And we had a shop called Red Tomato, or Blue Tomatoes or something. I think they sold stationery, or knick-knacks. I can't remember but I know I loved it Confused

LunaNorth · 17/12/2020 21:47

Saxone, Lilley and Skinner.
Chelsea Girl’s Charlotte Halton range.
Dolcis.
Ravel - I loved their shoes.
Principles.

Blue Tomato - we had one of those in the late 90s/2000s. Home Accessories and the like, I love my snowman Christmas card holders from there! (Not to be confused with blue banana which is an emo/scene clothing store).

Someone mentioned a shop like sweater shop - could it have been Dash? Sort of middle class Sweater Shop? Sweatshirts to wear over your princess Di pie crust collar blouses?
