We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

I'm having a flu jab on Saturday (late 50-something person) despite having a pretty robust immune system in normal times. I can't help thinking that because I've been so shut away this year I'm likely to catch anything going when I do (hopefully) start doing reckless things like going on public transport in the spring. At least the flu jab means I can narrow down any illness to colds or Covid.. And, also being invited to one means I'm in the system as someone of a certain age, and therefore will get invited for a Covid jab when that gets to my age group...

BogRollBOGOF · 08/12/2020 17:32

Not much to report chez Bogroll. Trying to pick up our routines after a month's hiatus. They've chopped and changed that many times. It's getting bewildering to remember what you're picking up and where you've come from.

DH has had a couple of days AL, so we went for a walk in mud. More mud than usual. My running routes are clearly being thoroughly traipsed through much more than usual in the absence of much else to do. They look like they're the tail end of winter rather than just the beginning. I need us out of tier 3 so all those pesky lockdown walkers can frequent the pubs instead and stop pulverising my secret running routes before I get stuck in neck deep Grin

OK, all you runner types, I am an annoying beginner and gave myself shin splints. Are there any particular stretches you would recommend to help them and prevent them in future?

I was really loving it and then, ow.

MercyBooth · 08/12/2020 18:12

"Have noticed over there they are already itching for another lockdown"

So is Sadiq Khan on the London ITV News.

Had to go into central London today for a meeting

Sadly the cycle lanes make the bus impossible to use

I was so out of touch, on the way home, I got the wrong Tube! Haven’t been into the office since March.

Noticed lots of restaurants have put beautiful decorations outside.

Then got home and saw an email from sister which irrationally annoyed me - saying the vaccine is the only way out.

She started off being quite calm about covid but is now worried, I think.

It’s honestly such an oddly complex subject it’s hard to know how people feel. Someone on another thread said “I am not anti lockdown” but she was - she seems to think anti lockdown means rule breaking.

I think lots of people are anti lockdown but don’t break rules?

ISaySteadyOn · 08/12/2020 18:28

And then he will complain about the devastation of the hospitality and restaurant industries in London. Hmm

Is there a dedicated running board?

Be very careful, a friend of mine pulled out of marathon training near the end because the shin splints were so bad, the doctor said she could do permanent damage. She does half marathons still and it’s fine.

ISaySteadyOn · 08/12/2020 18:38

Oh, I stopped running as soon as I got them. I am waiting to heal and then I will try again.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/12/2020 18:44

Comfortable trainers with the right support help. I tend to notice my shins as my trainers age, and it does correspond with the treads wearing.

I run on a mix of ground which helps too. Too much hard road or too many off-road hills and I'll feel it. I keep my exercise mixed up too.

I can't vouch for specific stretches (google/ youtube/ pintrest tend to be good for checking) but foam rolling or prickle balls can also be good for easing muscle tightness.

BBC article on the Oxford vaccine says there is some evidence it can reduce transmission. I'm not bothered about taking a vaccine for my own health, not whilst there are people more vulnerable who should go before me... but if it reduces transmission then I shall crack open the champers and get my arm out Grin

So is Sadiq Khan on the London ITV News.

I heard him on the news. He said Londoners needed to be careful or they'd face tougher measures & possibly another national lockdown.

No mate, you don't get to dictate what goes on elsewhere in the UK. Especially not when London has higher levels than we do in our tier 3 county!

I find the 2 trolleys easier to visualise but I do like the idea of using a cow's length.

'Get a cow away from me' could cause wonderful havoc in Aldi' 🤣🤣🤣

2m is roughly my dad's height. I often think, "Could dad lie down comfortably in that gap?" I've concluded that he often wouldn't be able to.

Other figures in Essex are:

Southend's rate rose from 115.8 to 176.4 with 323 new cases confirmed.
Castle Point's rate fell from 178.1 to 175.9, with 159 new cases
Rochford's rate rose from 132.8 to 160.2 with 140 new cases
In Thurrock, the rate rose from 207.6 to 224.3 with 362 new cases
Colchester rose to and 89.4 rate with 174 cases, from a rate of 67.3, (131 cases) the week before
Tendring's rate rose from 55.3 to 66.9 with 102 cases confirmed
Maldon jumped from a 115.5 rate (75 cases), from a rate of 58.5 (38 cases) the week before
Braintree's rate fell from 120.6 to 107.5 with 164 new cases
In Chelmsford, the rate rose to 111 with 198 new cases

TabbyStar · 08/12/2020 19:54

I just got a text notification from my doctors surgery inviting me to book an appt for a flu jab

I got it for the first time ever too, I don't mix much either so I don't think I'll bother. The whole covid thing has made me much less likely to comply though. I think I will end up having to have the covid injections because of my DM's anxiety despite being almost certain I've had covid. I haven't seen any evidence about safety for people who've had covid so I'm not that keen, but then I'm quite a long way down the list.

I’ve completely lost the plot with what they did about the double counted cases.
MissEWeatherwax · 08/12/2020 20:06

Could you image a cow in Aldi, it would never get past the tills!
I find the figures when say there is 20 cases then they give you that figure as 100000 confusing. Because at one point where I live was something like 350 per 100000, but there were 21 cases!

Yes and it’s impossible to get like for like comparison on MSM tables.

I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a cow as big as 2m.

MissEWeatherwax · 08/12/2020 20:56

Cows scare me, just as much as bulls! I have never been close to one. I like them , like the Father Ted sketch, far away Blush

Orangeblossom77777 · 08/12/2020 20:59

Bath is quite busy and we have these police and marshall people wandering around. Some new weird rainbow signs with covid kills on them I noticed. I just ignore most of it and go to the pool and walk back along he river, looks quite pretty in some ways. They have done this odd thing in empty shops, filling them with balloons and snow scenes. Bath is usually so so busy so I admit there is some part is quite nice about it being a bit less hectic. Less tourists etc.

MargosKaftan · 08/12/2020 21:10

I honestly think some people are annoyed there's a vaccine, it appears we arent fucking up giving it to those who need it, and so we can stop worrying about covid.

They really like the drama, and this ending of: "and then we vaccinated all the vulnerable people, everyone else caught it but was fine after a few days, and things got back to normal" is not the Hollywood blockbuster ending they wanted!

Or could it be a fear they are realising they arent in the group that need the vaccine for us to get back to normal, so they didn't need to worry about catching it in the first place?

Orangeblossom77777 · 08/12/2020 21:22

It's so annoying. They are itching to get the exams cancelled now as well. They can sod off.

MargosKaftan · 08/12/2020 21:45

Also, mask spots are back! Managed to lose my silk face mask for wearing at work, and so back to the cotton or single use ones - nice line of spots across my cheek where the top seem touches.

Obviously in the grand scheme of things, not a big deal. New silk mask acquired, and thankfully, said mask covers the spots...
