We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

I think a lot of the experts are advocating three days in the office and two at home - which is what DH had - though I could never rely on him being around those two days as meetings often poped up that he had to go in for.

DominaShantotto · 02/12/2020 10:47

I don't really have many friends - have one real family from school I'm close to and a couple I could call in favours for if I was stuck but that's about it. I had a social network via university and the kids' activities - but all of that has gone now. I'm desperately lonely.

DominaShantotto · 02/12/2020 10:50

The thread about people being sad that the vaccine is here sums up a lot of this - they're allowed to be sad about that - but no one who has found this shit has been allowed the same dignity.

I miss my morning walks in to campus and finding somewhere with a coffee to work - I miss that split between uni and life. The kids do too - they just see that they come home and mum's still on lectures - they haven't quite processed that they'd normally be at afterschool club if I was on campus - and it's something DD1 in particular uses to attack me with (she's a button pusher by nature though).

A number of my friends swear by rugby for energetic youngsters. At least one friend also said it helped her son emotionally as well as a means of letting off frustration in a controlled environment.

Iheartmysmart · 02/12/2020 11:02

Flowers for everyone who is feeling lonely.

Recycledblonde · 02/12/2020 11:07

In the interests of being even handed, one of the main reasons that the vaccine has been got through swiftly is not because of lack of red tape but because of unlimited funds. The vast majority of the time taken up getting a new treatment out is taken up by writing proposals and trying to get funding only to have them pull out and then having to submit new ones all whilst fulfilling other roles. That in itself can take years. The unlimited money which has been thrown at this problem has enabled them to dedicate themselves to the testing only not the grubbing for money.

countrygirl99 · 02/12/2020 11:13

Most of the people I interact with at work aren't in the same location as me. So I used to drive over an hour each way to spend the day on the phone which always seemed daft. I'm happy to carry on working from home but would like to go into the office 1 day a week. Even if only because it's easy to pop to the shops at lunchtime from the office but not from my village.

WouldBeGood · 02/12/2020 11:14

@Recycledblonde yes, I agree.

That's fair enough. It just struck me as a rather odd thing that someone would say it was ok for the vaccine to be approved faster than normal as red tape had been removed! That's precisely what I do not want to hear. Your explanation makes sense and is much less worrying.
Hiphopopotamus · 02/12/2020 11:45

I think I’ve officially lost the plot - I eventually caught up on the bake off final yesterday and the end but where they say what people are up to suddenly had me in floods. I was watching these people I’d never met visit each other and stay with each other and just hang out and I just sobbed and sobbed - all I could get out to my husband was ‘people need people’ GrinGrin I think he thought I’d gone round the bend but something about watching this group of non family members interact like normal human beings with human contact just set off something inside me!

ISaySteadyOn · 02/12/2020 12:04

You're not alone. I feel similar. Even anxious introverts need interaction.

Iheartmysmart · 02/12/2020 12:20

I know exactly what you mean as well. I’m a massive introvert but do need some contact with people. I hate what these restrictions are doing to my mental health.

TabbyStar · 02/12/2020 12:21

I left my job to become self-employed so DD didn't have to spend so much time in after school club, could go to activities and have friends round, but then she complained that I was always working. You can't win! Sorry you're feeling lonely Thanks

juggler82 · 02/12/2020 12:24

The vaccine has had to jump through every usual hoop, none have been missed, not slashing red tape at all. I used to work in research, and have met many MHRA inspectors - they’re highly experienced utterly pedantic arseholes. Exactly what you need in this situation! I don’t trust this shower of a government, but I do trust the MHRA.

That's the set up I used to have pre covid and admit it was good for work life balance.

Can't wait to get back to the office again to have that real life face to face interaction as it does help when working in a team. Unfortunately I can't see me going back for many months yet until social distancing has finished.

NannyGythaOgg · 02/12/2020 13:16

Steph's Packed lunch all hail this new, safe, lifesaving vaccine.
Later in same programme
Get behind xxx the British Erin Brockovich, taking a major drug company to court for damage caused by something the company are still insisting is safe (and probably is for many people).

(I missed what it was but I think it was the mesh insert used for vaginal prolapses)

flower11 · 02/12/2020 13:25

I feel kind of lonely too, miss the chats in the playground and the shall we pop to the park. I've just had a difficult two weeks and talking to friends on zoom is not the same, when they are saying really wish I could hug you.
I ended up sobbing at work a couple of days later and a colleague did hug me, which actually made me sob even more.

I have my closest interactions at work because the nature of the job means we can't socially distance , so wear masks all the time.

Blobby10 · 02/12/2020 13:46

@BogRollBOGOF I used to coach girls rugby and you wouldn't believe the number of players who came to me (usually between 9 and 12 years) with behavioural issues but then went on to become really good team players. Junior Rugby is one of the most inclusive sports out there for youngsters as it prides itself on not pigeonholing players and welcoming everyone regardless of their ability, size, gender, race etc. I know this didn't used to always be the case but it really has changed over the past 5 years.

Orangeblossom77777 · 02/12/2020 13:50

If you think about it, if people moaned about the rues etc we would be told that 'but people are dying'

But then it is Ok to moan about us having a vaccine. But, em, people are dying? Confused

What is it, are we wanting to save the elderly from dying or not? Not if it is with a vaccine it seems...

WouldBeGood · 02/12/2020 14:19

Why are they sad the vaccine is here...? I dare not look

justasking111 · 02/12/2020 14:46

@Iheartmysmart

Well talk about hypocrisy! My local MP voted for the tiers which is no surprise as he’s a twat, however he has an article in the local paper today asking people to send cards and letters to those who may be suffering from loneliness. You’ve just voted to extend the very reason for this you prize prick!
Our prize prick despite the row going on in Wales voted aye for the tiers yesterday, he cannot wait to shake off Wales and be a proper english politician. I have raised this with my assembly member who does bloody care about Wales.
flower11 · 02/12/2020 14:49

Basically the OP doesn't want to go back to her old life, has enjoying lockdown and wants to carry on working from home. Surprising how many agree with her.

justasking111 · 02/12/2020 14:52

@ISaySteadyOn

I was pleased that even some Labour MPs voted against. I didn't expect that.

And agree about red tape entirely.

Labour abstained, what country are you talking about @ISaySteadyOn
HedgieHog · 02/12/2020 14:52

What’s an ADs? I’ve seen it before and not sure!
