Tested positive but need to get out, is this okay?

I’ve tested positive for Covid-19. I don’t know where I’ve got it from as I’ve followed the rules rigidly. I wonder if one of my children is an asymptotic carrier.

I feel quite rough but I’m not in bed. One thing I always do is a lot of exercise. I walk or run about 8 miles a day and without it my mental health deteriorates rapidly. I paced round and round the house and our tiny garden to do 10k steps today and the thought of trying to do that tomorrow is making me anxious.

If I set the alarm for 6am, do you think it is acceptable to go out for a walk? I live rurally so can take a head torch and go down lanes and tracks where I’m 99% sure I won’t encounter anyone and there is no need for me to touch anything, no gates etc. I will wear a face mask. DH says it is too risky in case I have an accident of some sort (I’m not sure how) or need aid. He thinks that would be putting others in danger. He does agree the chance of seeing anyone is very remote.

What would you do? I have to stay in don’t I?

Adjust your mindset. I haven’t left the house since November 3rd but have done a minimum of 10k steps a day every day. I prop my tablet up at eye level, put a Christmas movie or Netflix series on and pace it out as fast as I can for as long as it takes. I know it isn’t as good for me as walking outdoors but I have weak ankles and am likely to come a cropper on a loose paving stone or stray pebble walking outside. Marching it out inside is doable and better than stagnating.

It has another benefit in that if I change the position of my laptop everyday I am staring at another area of my home each time and notice different dust patches/cobwebs/mucky bits that would otherwise get overlooked.

Mintjulia · 29/11/2020 02:05

I''d go out. I'm like you and can't stay indoors so I've been going out before it's light.

Tell your husband your route, take a phone, a torch, wear a mask and something reflective. Tell him when you'll be back.

@Poppystars

People like you are why the country is in a mess.
Oh do fuck off!!!

There is a massive difference between someone showing symptoms but going about their life like they don’t. Those who are still socialising. Not people exercising at the crack of dawn on their own!!!!

Hi everyone, I've been following the rules like a good citizen. However, now I have caught the virus, its OK to ignore the rules now, since the risk is just to other people and not me, isn't it?

Thanks! Peace and love.

Mondaymanic · 29/11/2020 02:24

If it's early and you won't see anyone I'd go out

NameChange84 · 29/11/2020 02:27

Myself and an elderly relative are Shielding and have been since early March. We get up at 5 or 6 to walk somewhere “safe” where we feel unlikely to encounter anyone who may be unwittingly carrying Covid. Other Shielders up and down the UK do the exact same.

I’m disgusted that someone who knows they have Covid would ignore the law and the danger they pose to others and go out to exercise. It’s airborne. You could lead to someone losing their life.

garlictwist · 29/11/2020 02:30

I'd go. The risk of transmitting it under those circumstances is non existent.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 29/11/2020 02:35

My grandparents go for a walk each day at 5-6am to try to avoid people. They’re in their 80s with loads of health issues and if they caught it their chances would not be great. Their garden is tiny, and this is their only way to get outside.

Shame on the people on this thread who even consider encouraging the OP to put them at risk. Anyone who does this should be prosecuted and should consider themselves about one level better than a murderer. Absolutely disgusting selfishness from some of you.

BrummyMum1 · 29/11/2020 02:41

Stay the fuck at home like you’re meant to and do an exercise video with the windows open.

DaisyDreaming · 29/11/2020 02:50

Lots of vulnerable people I know are actually out around that sort of time trying to get some exercise before people come out. I agree aside the moral issues it’s not a good idea to go running alone and such a long distance with covid. Keeping moving is good but pushing yourself so much isnt

Go for it. You will be fine. All very safe. No risk to you whatsoever of catching it now that you have tested positive Hmm Sod the poor buggers out for a walk at the same time Confused
giggly · 29/11/2020 03:08

Well imagine you fell and broke a leg you’d be staying in for a lot longer than 2 weeks.
I honestly cannot believe the absolute selfishness of the people on here saying yes off you go love your mental health is more important than other peoples lives and I say that because you can do your exercises at home it’s just that you don’t want to . Isn’t that right op?

MinnieJackson · 29/11/2020 03:10

You HAVE covid. Running is great for the mind, but no. You said you feel a bit rough aswell. Exercising with a fever (don't know that you have one!) will make you feel worse for longer. I know it's not the same but maybe try and do some yoga, Pilates, star jumps lol. But if you're determined to excercise while you feel poorly I'd stay close to home. You obviously don't have to answer but how far down do you think your mh will go?

MinnieJackson · 29/11/2020 03:17

I mean if you can't go out running.how much would your metal health decline? I have bad mh issues but the opposite, I can't leave my house.

DeeCeeCherry · 29/11/2020 03:22

You have an unpredictable virus. It's an illness isn't it? How do you know you won't need assistance and if you do, what of the person who comes to your aid?

Why can't you do without your run temporarily, and exercise at home instead just for a time?

You can run again when you're better, surely? Lots of people have had to adapt their lifestyles temporarily, why should you be any different?

I'm not even talking about 'The Rules' it's just basic common sense.

So entitled.

VetiverAndLavender · 29/11/2020 03:28

If you're going to be obsessing over your step count, I think you should consider taking off the device that's doing the counting.

I'd find something else absolutely absorbing that you can immerse yourself in during quarantine. An audiobook, some films, a craft project. Some major organising project, mastering a difficult recipe, an addictive podcast. There are other outlets available.

SillyOldMummy · 29/11/2020 03:37

Your DH is right. Stay in.

HorridHamble · 29/11/2020 03:38

I recommend noise-cancelling headphones. Take even just 15 mins to yourself a day and do a meditation off the Calm app. Exercise can be marching inside, or zillions of free videos online. Try something fun and different like Highland Hustle or Bollywood style to distract yourself. You’ve only got to stay in a short while. Adapt.

yawnsvillex · 29/11/2020 03:40

I thought this was a deadly virus!? If you have it how can you possibly go running??

MinnieJackson · 29/11/2020 03:44

@yawnsvillex yeah...trying to persuade her from running..Confused

walksen · 29/11/2020 04:02

The law on this is crystal clear; you must stay in your house or garden for 10 days. Millions of people have already done this. As you are infected your DH has to self isolate for 14 ! The fines for breaking this go up to 10k If you went out and did get in to any problems the run could prove expensive. Not sure if you would end up with a criminal record on security DBS checks etc.

covid can be unpredictable, and can get worse after about a week. Lots of people report it can leave you unable to get out of bed after trying to get back to normal too quickly.

I get it is boring. I was going stir crazy myself when I had it. Going out when knowingly infectious is pretty selfish though.

porcelinaofthevastoceanss · 29/11/2020 04:06

Stay at home. You have Coronavirus.

PirateCatQueen · 29/11/2020 04:11

You do need to stay in. For the safety of others and also to give yourself a chance to recover.

As it’s making you so anxious to miss exercise for a relatively short time, you could look into exercise addiction.

At the very least, you need to find other ways to switch off/recharge/relax. It’s no healthy to have so much of your well-being so dependent on one thing.

Puffler · 29/11/2020 04:43

Just to be clear, I am staying at home.

For those who don’t understand, do you understand when people are afraid to leave their house, or huge crowds of people? For me, staying home is like throwing someone suffering with the opposite onto a tube at rush hour (pre-Covid!). For me seeing a vast space and very distant horizon calms me down.

I do a lot more than 10k steps a day, more like 20k but I feel anxious until I hit the 10k. It’s not the exercise itself but the being out and I can’t do that on a treadmill or by doing a class.

But to be clear, I am staying home. I’ve not broken any Covid rules at all throughout the year. It’s been hard, very hard at times. Two very young children, homeschooling and two adults trying to do full time jobs from home... but I know it’s been hard for everyone and we are the lucky ones to still have jobs and to be able to WFH. We’ve had to be very careful because I’m classified as vulnerable - I’m not going to out myself with my medical history, but it’s where this probably stems from.

I feel really bad right now and physically wouldn’t be able to run, I am struggling to catch my breath. I obviously won’t leave the house.

She's gonna go for her run I think...
