Tested positive but need to get out, is this okay?

I’ve tested positive for Covid-19. I don’t know where I’ve got it from as I’ve followed the rules rigidly. I wonder if one of my children is an asymptotic carrier.

I feel quite rough but I’m not in bed. One thing I always do is a lot of exercise. I walk or run about 8 miles a day and without it my mental health deteriorates rapidly. I paced round and round the house and our tiny garden to do 10k steps today and the thought of trying to do that tomorrow is making me anxious.

If I set the alarm for 6am, do you think it is acceptable to go out for a walk? I live rurally so can take a head torch and go down lanes and tracks where I’m 99% sure I won’t encounter anyone and there is no need for me to touch anything, no gates etc. I will wear a face mask. DH says it is too risky in case I have an accident of some sort (I’m not sure how) or need aid. He thinks that would be putting others in danger. He does agree the chance of seeing anyone is very remote.

What would you do? I have to stay in don’t I?

I know you’re really unlikely to see anyone, I get it, but if I knew I had COVID I wouldn’t go out. For the reason your DH said. Loads of people have had to self isolate without gardens etc.

WoodbytheRiver · 28/11/2020 23:29

Yes, you have to stay in. Of course it isn’t acceptable to go out when you’ve had a positive covid test.

Tootsietoot · 28/11/2020 23:29

Of course you have to stay in. l say this with someone with bipolar who had to stay in for 4 fucking weeks. It's hard but you can do it.

You need to stay in. If you have a bad turn, feel faint or dizzy or get breathless and cant get a decent breath then you'd be alone down some country lane and in big trouble. I know you're saying that you feel mostly fine but you just dont know how this illness is going to go or how it will affect you.

Obviously there is also the law; you must not leave your home.

DM1209 · 28/11/2020 23:31

My 12 year old daughter ended up on oxygen. She nearly died from Covid.

Stay at home.

sherrystrull · 28/11/2020 23:31

You need to stay in. My 6 year old has been at home for two weeks due to a case in his class and hasn't left the house. He's climbing the walls. I've told him he's staying at home to keep others safe.

TinyGhost · 28/11/2020 23:32

People who live in flats manage staying in.
You do have a garden to get fresh air and exercise, so there is no excuse to leave your property.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 28/11/2020 23:32

@cwtchesandprosecco i dont see how it would have done more harm. Its 10 days. Yes mentally thats not easy, but its a temporary situation after which she can go on as many runs as she desires. It really shouldnt do any long term mental harm

She could have killed someone. Or given someone long term health implications. We have asked at risk people and elderly people to stay inside for months on end becauae its not safe for them to go out. The least people can do is make it as safe as possible for these people by staying in when we are ill, if we acknowlegde how hard it is for us to stay inside for 10 days we can try and enable people who are at risk to get some fresh air by staying in when we are ill.

Same goes for other illnesses actually like flu, norovirus, chickenpox.

Africa2go · 28/11/2020 23:33

Stay in. Why are you needs more important than everyone else's?! You have a garden, access to online exercise so you have options. Don't go out and still to the rules.

WickedWestieWitch · 28/11/2020 23:33

My 6 year old and 4 year old can stay in. You're an adult with full mental capacity albeit mental health problems. Stay in and exercise.

Ginfordinner · 28/11/2020 23:33

I'm on the fence when it comes to whether it is morally OK, but, in terms of your physical health, if you are feeling rough, going for a run could do more harm than good.

Your immune system is already stressed. Rest gives your body a chance to recover. Your immune system works best when it isn’t in overdrive.

NeonIcedcoffee · 28/11/2020 23:36

I think you need a word with yourself. Its not healthy to have to exercise. Let your body rest and heal you don't need to be getting 8 miles in while you e got covid. Ffs.

WeAllHaveWings · 28/11/2020 23:37

Can't believe sometime who has tested positive and has had advice on what to do is even asking this. No wonder the country is in such a mess.

Stay in.

Nohomemadecandles · 28/11/2020 23:37

Stay in. It's not just about you.

CherryPieface · 28/11/2020 23:38

I’m so sorry but you need to stay in. It’s not for long!

SilverOtter · 28/11/2020 23:39

It's not forever. Can't you just stick to the rules and stay in? You might start to feel more unwell anyway, and what if you took a turn for the worse while out and about?

WhenAWrenVisits · 28/11/2020 23:41

Maybe if you were isolating just in case this wouldn’t be as bad, but you have a positive test so you need to stay at home. You can’t guarantee you won’t come across people or any kind of unexpected event could lead you to having to have contact with people. Example: a key worker I know was crashed into by a car of people breaking lockdown in lockdown1. Loads of people ended up having to have contact because of this. It’s not fair on other people

Coolerthanapolarbearstoenails · 28/11/2020 23:41

I think you need to stay in.

I can see why you are so tempted and I would be too.

Can anyone lend you an exercise machine for a short period?

ArcheryAnnie · 28/11/2020 23:42

You do need to stay in. There's a further reason - if you have covid, excessive exercise can make you more ill. Quite a lot of Long Covid patients have found this to be the case - they are so keen to get back to exercising, and it sets them back a lot.

scrappydappydoooooo · 28/11/2020 23:43

You need to stay in for two reasons. One so as to be absolutely sure you don't infect anyone else. You could have an accident when out or become hypoxic and need medical attention from strangers, thus endangering them.

Secondly, exertion commonly triggers post-viral conditions with Covid. Your mental health will be a lot better if you rest for a month and recover completely in that time. Than it will if you exert yourself too soon and end up struggling to do the basics for the next 6 months.

Might be an option? (No idea how to do a nice link)

Mycatwontstopstaring · 28/11/2020 23:43

It’s been proved that Covid can hang in the air for an hour after it’s breathed out. That’s why it’s so contagious, remember those Korean cases where a churchgoer caught it from someone who had occupied their pew hours before?

You say you wouldn’t touch gates etc but all the virus-infected air you breathe out would be landing all around you. The mask stops a little but not much.

You need to stay in. You would never know if you breathed out a droplet that later killed an elderly passer, but they’d still be dead.

You have a garden, do sit-ups, do star jumps, thank your lucky stars that you are young enough not to be badly affected and do not go out.

Mulhollandmagoo · 28/11/2020 23:44

Your husband has a point in that if you have an accident and need some sort of medical assistance you would then be putting people may risk! You also don't know you won't encounter anyone. Having to isolate is rubbish, but it's temporary. Could you do some online exercise? There's a lady on YouTube who does walking workout videos...sounds naff but actually quite enjoyable.

LittleBearPad · 28/11/2020 23:44

Yes you need to stay in. You know this too.

katy1213 · 28/11/2020 23:46

You shouldn't be this obsessive about exercise.
