Tested positive but need to get out, is this okay?

I’ve tested positive for Covid-19. I don’t know where I’ve got it from as I’ve followed the rules rigidly. I wonder if one of my children is an asymptotic carrier.

I feel quite rough but I’m not in bed. One thing I always do is a lot of exercise. I walk or run about 8 miles a day and without it my mental health deteriorates rapidly. I paced round and round the house and our tiny garden to do 10k steps today and the thought of trying to do that tomorrow is making me anxious.

If I set the alarm for 6am, do you think it is acceptable to go out for a walk? I live rurally so can take a head torch and go down lanes and tracks where I’m 99% sure I won’t encounter anyone and there is no need for me to touch anything, no gates etc. I will wear a face mask. DH says it is too risky in case I have an accident of some sort (I’m not sure how) or need aid. He thinks that would be putting others in danger. He does agree the chance of seeing anyone is very remote.

What would you do? I have to stay in don’t I?

Show respect for others and follow the rules. The outdoors should not be a place where anyone at any time could encounter a knowingly Covid positive person. There are physical activities like work outs, yoga, Pilates etc that can be done at home indoors or in the garden.

numberoneson · 30/11/2020 18:43

My beloved husband died in May of Covid despite following all the rules. Suppose you did meet someone, or had an accident and needed help, therefore putting some innocent person/s at risk? I would never forgive you. I was with my husband, thanks to a wonderful Consultant, when he died and it wasn't pretty. If you do go out you're not only breaking the rules, you're potentially killing someone and breaking someone else's heart. I think it would be despicably selfish of you. If others can stay inside forthe obligatory period there's no reason you can't too.

seaurchin2016 · 30/11/2020 18:43

If you go out you should be reported to the police as you are breaking the law. People I know have been waiting for test results and have self-isolated for 14 days and then found out they were negative. Rather this than take the risk of infecting others.
I couldn't live with myself if I went out and infected others or caused a death/s.
I really can't believe how inconsiderate and self centred you are for either thinking of going out when positive or indeed actually going out as in 'notgoingout' case. It is not clever so stop bragging about it.

STAY INDOORS - if I knew who you were I would report you to the police. I reiterate this is not a game! There are lives at stake. Consider others.

Its a tricky one. I think you are going to have to stay in. My son is extremely sporty and he is having to isolate because of being in contact with someone until Friday and he isn't enjoying it but is staying mainly in his bedroom (I'm not looking forward to getting in there at the end of the week).

Maybe a YouTube Hiit session? Then if you feel rough you can stop and change it to Netflix.

DrSK2 · 30/11/2020 18:46

Definitely stay in. Against the law & not a civil behaviour.

BiggerBoat1 · 30/11/2020 18:48

Of course you have to stay in.

FelicisNox · 30/11/2020 18:49

Just because you feel relatively well right now doesn't mean you will remain that way so you need to stay at home and recover properly. The last thing the emergency services need is to find you collapsed somewhere.

From what you describe re: mental health the excessive exercise (8 miles a day is excessive so don't argue) is a SYMPTOM of your mental illness not a reliever and that requires acknowledgement and treatment so stay home, ring your GP, explain your predicament and request telephone support.

Imissmoominmama · 30/11/2020 18:50

You can’t go out, but I strongly disagree with the pp who said having to exercise isn’t healthy. Our bodies stress when we do- especially outside where it’s green.

Could you try yoga? There’s loads on YouTube. And if it all gets too much, go out in the garden with some music and throw some shapes Wink.

Imissmoominmama · 30/11/2020 18:50
  • release stress
Imissmoominmama · 30/11/2020 18:52

Is eight miles a day excessive? I walk that far daily (further some days) to keep myself sane. I can’t run because I have osteoarthritis.

Same, I often walk 5-8 miles a day, never run as I like to stop and look at things, being outside and exercising keeps me sane, like OP I would probably panic if told to isolate for 14 days.
KittyMcV · 30/11/2020 18:57

Common sense should prevail. If you know you can keep yourself away from others I'd go for a short spell outside just to keep yourself right - but if that's the case... then why ask on here?? I couldn't go out if it was me - but I live in a town. If I lived rurally and knew I wouldn't meet anybody or have to touch anything, I'd count myself so lucky. However, it is still against the regulations, so this post is about following the spirit of the law or the letter of the law.

ilovepixie · 30/11/2020 18:59

I would go out. It will help your mental health and then therefore your physical help. Just keep a wide berth from people and you will be fine.

sequinednostrils · 30/11/2020 18:59

I am a keen runner and run for my mental health. Self isolating was hard, so I got a second hand treadmill delivered and it's really helped. If , like me, you rely on endorphins you need a plan b and c and that will help the anxiety. Always have a back up plan.
What do you do if you get injured? Do that. Let your body heal itself. Then it'll be strong to enjoy that first run of freedom.

reginafalange2020 · 30/11/2020 19:06

Blows my mind how many people are saying go out.
You have corona virus therefore you need to stay inside. If you fell over or got hit by a car or attacked I don't think the emergency services would thank you. Unlikely scenarios I admit but still possible

SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere · 30/11/2020 19:20

Honest answer:

That you are even asking this question tells you that you shouldn't, but like others, if you feel justified by people on here saying go out I am sure you will...

Nannasharky · 30/11/2020 19:21

I think because you've asked the question maybe you already know what the right thing to do is. Worst case scenario, you have an accident and you infect someone who comes to help. They don't know you have Covid and they get you to hospital or whatever and then subsequently infect their loved ones. You couldnt live with yourself if that led to a death. Please do the right thing and don't go out. It's not nice and I understand the mental health aspect but you know it's the right thing to do

Aragog · 30/11/2020 19:22

Just keep a wide berth from people and you will be fine.

And tough luck to those who are vulnerable and trying to go for a quiet walk at a quiet time. Wonder if they'll be fine too?!

This thread has highlighted an awful lot of selfish behaviour amongst adults in our society.

Chestnutacorns123 · 30/11/2020 19:25

You are covid positive. Please stay in. Do an online class if you miss exercise but don't put others at risk.

linsey2581 · 30/11/2020 19:25

It’s idiots like you that piss me off 😡😡😡😡

SpringSunshineandTulips · 30/11/2020 19:29

It’s two weeks and you have a garden. You shouldn’t be going out and risking others. Even if it’s a low risk you are still putting others at risk and it’s just not fair. Don’t be selfish - stay in. If children can spend two weeks cooped up in a flat with no garden you can def manage with your garden.

sadblackcat · 30/11/2020 19:29

You must stay in. What if you tripped in the dark and broke your ankle? you would put the safety of whoever comes to your aid at risk. That aside you should not be doing strenuous exercise when you are ill.
The rules are for everyone not just for everyone else.

Rabblemum · 30/11/2020 19:30

Why not do a Youtube workout?

Chestnutacorns123 · 30/11/2020 19:30

I've just read all your posts. Sensible decision. Get well soon OP.

sqirrelfriends · 30/11/2020 19:35

Just stay in, it's not that hard.

Besides, if you get caught it could be a £1000 fine.
