...and the best they came come up with is Mrs fucking Brown! A Les Dawson drag act from the 70s - it wasn't funny then and it still isn't now.
Surely they could have done better?

We rarely watch the BBC anymore, it’s the same programmes year after year. Rinse, repeat.
The nail in the coffin was series 3 (I think) of Killing Eve - a great show which turned into a poor comedy. Dreadful.

SoupDragon · 24/11/2020 09:48

@happymummy12345

It's the best comedy ever. I love it. People who hate it just don't or can't understand the humour at all. I don't understand why anyone would hate it.
No, I understand what it is aiming for. I still think it's shit. The difference is that I can grasp that different people like different stuff and some people like it.

@PawsAndPhytoncides

Most important question: I've never seen Ghosts. Is it really good? Am I missing something?
I suppose all comedy is subjective, but I really enjoy it. It’s by the original Horrible Histories team.

All episodes (2 series) are on BBC iPlayer at the moment.

SoupDragon · 24/11/2020 09:51

I don’t understand why Mrs Browns is seen as bad but the Drag race show is marvellous and ‘woke’.

I'm not a fan of Drag Race either but that seems different to me because they aren't pretending to be an actual woman if that makes sense. I don't see them as pretending to be women at all, they're a just a caricature - I don't think any woman exists in real life like that.

oneglassandpuzzled · 24/11/2020 09:52

WHat hold does Mrs Brown have on the BBC? I have never met anyone who watches it and yet it is always on.

SoupDragon · 24/11/2020 09:53

There is the "at home with Mrs Brown" chat show thing too.

Myself and 4 year old DD love miranda!

Chrysanthemum5 · 24/11/2020 09:58

I hate Mrs Brown but it's great that Ghosts will have a Christmas special - very excited about that!

Onceuponatimethen · 24/11/2020 10:11

Ooh sewing bee!! Even better!

I've just watched it all and now gone back to episode one so I can get DH to watch it. So, accepting all comedy is subjective, yes its good.
TotalBitch · 24/11/2020 10:40

I also hate Mrs Brown. It is the absolute worst. Some of the other stuff sounds good though. I'm actually looking forward to it all now! Ghosts Christmas special and about eleventy million mince pies please and thank you Grin.

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 24/11/2020 10:59

I don’t like MrsBrown but it gets huge ratings so it’s hardly surprising the Beeb makes a Christmas special every year. I’m looking forward to Vicar of Dibly, Goes Wrong Show and Motherland, the Black Narcissus should be really good too.

Ifailed · 24/11/2020 11:49

I don’t like MrsBrown but it gets huge ratings

4.6 million last Christmas, out of a population of 67 million. So 93% of people didn't watch it, hardly huge ratings.

Oh these offerings are the equivalent of being passed a selection box only to find its empty apart from a few wrappers and maybe the odd toffee no one wants.
I might re watch the Christmas Carol from last year or stick on some Only Fools and Horses.

haircutsRus · 24/11/2020 12:04

Oh yawn. Most of it sounds as dull as ditchwater.

Dunno how they will do the Vicar of Dibley though - so many cast members are no longer with us Sad

Still the highest rated of the 21st century.

Still the highest rated of the 21st century

Only Fools and Horses; 'If They Could See Us Now'. December 25, 2001 21.35 million.

It was ranked as the 7th most watched TV show last Christmas. I don’t like Mrs Browns Boys personally, but surely you have to recognise that a TV show that’s ranked as one of the top 10 watched on Christmas Day is a popular TV show.

As such, I’m not surprised the BBC are doing another Mrs Browns Boys Christmas special. And they’re providing plenty of other shows to watch for those of us not interested in it.

SuperbGorgonzola · 24/11/2020 12:15

Ghosts will be good, as will Mortimer and Whitehouse. Repair Shop is good. Dr Who isn't my thing but people like it. I like Motherland too, and Upstart Crow.

PPs are right, you've focused on Mrs Brown as it's an easy target.

nosswith · 24/11/2020 12:19

The BBC is facing the challenge of those who want to abolish or decriminalise payment of the licence fee. Some simply as their choice of viewing is not the BBC, others because they think it is left/pinko BBC and not bowing down 100% to the Tories.

You would think that the BBC in order to defend its value and uniqueness would not score such as own goal as Mrs Brown's Boys. The best argument for licence fee abolition there is.

Doyoumind · 24/11/2020 12:22

I knew this would be about fucking Mrs Brown. I just do not understand why it is on our televisions. Utter shit imho.

user1471565182 · 24/11/2020 12:23

I suppose the problem is they havnt been able to actually film anything this year

SoupDragon · 24/11/2020 12:23

It was ranked as the 7th most watched TV show last Christmas.

So not the "most highly rated of the 21st century" as another poster claimed.
