Cold left over roast potatoes

I always sneak one off the plate and eat cold on their own with a pinch of sea salt. DH thinks I’m a philistine and they have to be heated up!

What do you do?

They get chucked into the food waste bin.
Never eaten them cold. Must admit I'm thinking about trying one.Maybe.

I must admit that cold roast potatoes aren't something I'd ever thought of eating for some bizzare reason.
I have been educated.

You could have heated them rather than chucking them. They heat back up nicely

"Elizabeth, I am so glad you are here, but I couldn't help but notice you had an extra few mls of gravy there... you said you normally have about 75ml, but that looks a lot more like 78ml to me "

I hope everyone is talking about eating cold homemade ones and not the frozen type.Ive tried the latter and wasn't impressed.

NiceGerbil · 24/11/2020 10:12

Don't chuck them!

DD loves them cold. I'm not s fan but.. if you slice them up and shallow fry till golden each side they're like triple cooked chips. Which they would be, if you think about it!

Have with leftover cold meat salad and branston or just put salt on and woof then down Grin

NiceGerbil · 24/11/2020 10:13

I've never got involved with a frozen roast potato to my knowledge.

My spuds are awesome. Sorry for lack of modesty Grin

Frozen roast potatoes arent allowed in my house. I think they are rank. Same as frozen Yorkshire puddings. And frozen stuffing.

Frozen roast potatoes are depressing enough the first time around. No chance I would repeat that experience with cold ones.
AriesTheRam · 24/11/2020 10:41

Thank god! I make my own roasties,hate the frozen ones

CloudyVanilla · 24/11/2020 10:43

What kind of monster would make only enough roast potatoes to eat for the one dinner?

surely at least double the needed quantity is standard

Lilliarna · 24/11/2020 10:47

People that dont need eat for a week after having a small jacket potato for lunch, most probably.

I can well imagine some people measuring out a roast dinner to the nth degree according to their guest's precise recommended calorific needs 😂

ODFOx · 24/11/2020 10:49

They aren't as nice next day. Still delicious, but they lose the crisp to fluff ratio and some get slightly chewy.
Usually we have none leftover because we are all too greedy but I have been known to make a whole batch to go cold to make roast potato soup.
Use goosefat toasties if you can. Sweat off a handful of shallots, thinly sliced, in butter. Once soft, add in chopped up 'leftover' cold roast potatoes and chicken (or turkey) stock. Warm through and blitz to smoothness. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve with a swirl of cream and a pinch of black pepper or snipped chives.
Yes: that is a soup which includes roast potatoes, Goose fat, butter and cream. It tastes of nothing but roast potato, and has no nutrients except fat, carb and calories.

@CheesePleaseLoueese

Cold leftover roast potatoes eaten later on/ the same day = yum.

Contrast:

Fridged roast potatoes from yesterday = yuck.

Yes, exactly!
praepondero · 24/11/2020 10:50

Cold roasted potatoes, no thank you. However, the ultimate in potato nirvana is a boiled lovely little Jersey Royal, hot or cold, doesn't matter, with a generous dollop of sea-salted butter.

AlwaysLatte · 24/11/2020 10:50

Not cold! But I do like to cut them into cubes and pan fry with garlic and herbs and serve with grated Parmesan on top. I deliberately make extra for this! Serve it with something like a Spanish omelette for lunch next day.

AlwaysLatte · 24/11/2020 10:52

I don't understand people who can't count - just roast enough potatoes for the planned meal.
My counting is pretty good. My mind reading abilities as to exactly how many roasties people would like later isn't so sharp! Wink

GiraffeNecked · 24/11/2020 11:16

Yeah my DH can be a bit of a food philistine so will microwave roast potatoes. I think that's wrong, he likes them.

I like them fried in butter or olive oil - chopped up.

lazylinguist · 24/11/2020 11:18

Confused What, because everybody has to have exactly the same number of potatoes every time, regardless of how hungry they are? That's just silly.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 24/11/2020 11:39

I think my taste buds must be broken, I can't abide roast potatoes, hot or cold.

Thanks for you. That's devastating to hear Sad

@inappropriateraspberry

When I worked in a pub, the leftover roasties from Sunday carvery were put out in bowls in the bar in the afternoon for customers to help themselves to. This was Cornwall, so not an East End thing, just British I think!
Also in SE London in the traditional pubs, with cubes of cheese and mini cheddars too. I'd forgotten about that!
praepondero · 24/11/2020 11:47

@lazylinguist

My MIL, a dreadful cook by her own words, which I won't dispute, always counts out the new potatoes as to get 'the optimal number' per person and I have seen her leaving out 3 miserable small ones as they were surplus. 3 little potatoes from a bag. Why couldn't she just dump the whole bag in the pot. What was she planning to do with the 3 rejects. I shall always wonder.....

Shock I think you should see a doctor. I don't think I've ever met anyone who didn't like roast potatoes.
