Another thousand posts filled and we're ploughing on through another weekend of squelching through parks before we hit the Long Dark Teatime of the Soul.

The AD chat continues...

Grin

“Open wounds? A&E is that way - join the queue outside in the cold car park, beats the wilderness at least.”

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 23/11/2020 17:13

I'm sure that picture came from a series called "You're not helping, Jesus", which had Jesus getting in the way of various situations like a woman giving birth, and talking rubbish. I think the childbirth one had a caption saying "oh fuck off, Jesus" on it.

Ooh, had Jesus been reading that thread on Joe Wicks and “his” breastfeeding journey?

I promise I’m off to make dinner and will stop cluttering the thread now.

I've long had a feeling that Matt Hancock has a Messiah-complex & possibly wanted to be a doctor because he was good at Operation & wearing his sleeves rolled up, but didn't like having to talk to actual ill people (except for the ones they wheel out for when govt ministers visit hospitals, who aren't that ill & have the cleanest dressing gowns).

Never mind me not getting into Heaven, there goes my NHS pension (if I ever get to retire).

wanderings · 23/11/2020 17:45

The Lockdown Sceptics website linked to an article that some churches have been worshipping underground this month. It's nice to know that even a large organisation is advocating a mild form of civil disobedience. Smile

wanderings · 23/11/2020 17:47

I'm resisting the temptation to watch Saint Boris's latest briefing. I'm still traumatised by when he said "squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze the brakes" in August.

MercyBooth · 23/11/2020 17:55

@TheOrchidKiller His inane grin winds me up. It also gives the impression that hes enjoying this.

AcornAutumn · 23/11/2020 18:02

It wouldn’t occur to me to watch Johnson waffle, it’s easier to read about it.

May I ask a totally irrelevant question? I have a feeling I’ll get slagged off if I ask on the thread.

There’s a thread about Xmas stamps with arguments about religious or pagan. Someone asked what was Xmas before it was pagan - I thought it was pagan?

I might re read Carrie’s War. I always think of that book near Xmas!

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/11/2020 18:10

Covid: Vaccination will be required to fly, says Qantas chief

I wonder if this will spread - I'm not surpised Australian airline has the stance given their restrictions.

There's always been a big mid winter festival in northern hemisphere - meat starts to spoil so you have a big midwinter feast. I think x-mas ended up on the 25 December due to Roman god Sol Invictus who had a festival then Saturnalia, the most popular holiday on the ancient Roman calendar at one point so easy to hid early christain gatherings then.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/11/2020 18:14

Apaprently 2020 been good for words:

OED Word of the Year expanded for 'unprecedented' 2020

"It's both unprecedented and a little ironic - in a year that left us speechless, 2020 has been filled with new words unlike any other."

Bollss · 23/11/2020 18:20

Well we'll be in tier 3 so looks like we're doing fuck all for our anniversary on the 7th. Load of shite.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/11/2020 18:22

"Mute/ un-mute" is used a lot on Zoom Brownies...
It is one thing we would like to import into post-Covid life, muting Brownies in the community hall Grin

I always wished I could zap my pupis into being mute Wink

I'm in the North West where rates are falling every day. Our towns infection rate has halved in a week. So I am holding out for tier 2.

But totally agree that none of this should have been announced until he knew who was where. Its ridiculous.

Bloody bumbling Boris and Malaka Handjob are fucking useless.

Theredjellybean · 23/11/2020 18:28

I a long lurker..usually really positive
Very subversive and also very concerned about slow insidious slide to dystopia
But mostly jolly and a bit let's get on with it and not grumble... But today has finis me off.
So back to tiers that make no sense, and just cause confusion... And how in all that is unholy can only six people be together inside... But 4000 fans can go scream and shout and sing at a football match... In a huge 70,000 seat stadium OK... But it is 50% capacity allowed up to 4k.
So 8k location can have 4k.
Ok good excellent.. Let em all back but for gods sake let me decide the risk of having a flecking small party.
Or just my dds and dsds and their partners all come home together.
Aghhhh....
Though mostly girls do.. But one dsd has become very roolz focused.
Anyone else had other friends or family suddenly become more roolz focused in this second lockdown...

Thank you

Sorry, I phrased my question poorly

If Christianity was after paganism, was there anything before paganism?

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 23/11/2020 18:42

In London so I think the very best we can hope for is Tier 2, and cases aren't coming down so it may be Tier 3. The fact that we've had 0 excess deaths obviously counts for nothing.

I know a few people who've got very roolz-focused, I think it gives an illusion of control.

countrygirl99 · 23/11/2020 18:45

On the Mayors Facebook page there are comments salivating about being in tier 2 or 3 but if we aren't in 1 hardly anyone will be.

AcornAutumn · 23/11/2020 18:55

I don’t think anywhere will be Tier 1.

@AcornAutumn everything before Judaism counts as paganism. There is t a single pagan religion or set of beliefs. All we know is that there is evidence that the midwinter solstice was a time of celebration, feasting and firelight. Because we see similar across many countries it can be surmised that it was special to many areas of Northern Europe. If you want more history I can recommend Stations if the Sun by Professor Ronald Hutton.

Worldgonecrazy · 23/11/2020 18:59

I’m likely to be in tiger 3. Local positive test results are rising at a ridiculous rate and instead of saying ‘these numbers don’t make sense’ and looking for reasons /testing errors it’s just presumed they are correct. No critical thinking allowed. I suspect the local testing lab has issues.

Yes...so that’s all under the pagan umbrella, I thought?

Sorry, perhaps my brain isn’t working today.

It would be really interesting to get a % of positive tests with no symptoms but they’ll never do that.

This is another reason I don’t feel like I can go for a drink. The chances of being stuck in 2 week isolation are quite high anyway unless you don’t see anyone.

Add in a bar and it’s just increasing it.

From a quick scan on the C board, some people with colds are going for tests but a cold isn’t a symptom is it? There’s usually loads of colds around in November anyway.

If Christianity was after paganism, was there anything before paganism?

Owing to the history of its nomenclature, paganism traditionally encompasses the collective pre- and non-Christian cultures in and around the classical world; including those of the Greco-Roman, Celtic, Germanic, Slavic tribes.[39]
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paganism#:~:text=Owing%20to%20the%20history%20of,Celtic%2C%20Germanic%2C%20Slavic%20tribes.

Definitions from Oxford Languages
languages.oup.com/google-dictionary-en/
paganism
noun
1:a religion other than one of the main world religions, specifically a non-Christian or pre-Christian religion.
"converts from paganism to Christianity"
2.a modern religious movement incorporating beliefs or practices from outside the main world religions, especially nature worship.
modern paganism includes a respect for mother earth

If you go for non-modern pagans just a catch all term for all pre-christians.

There were lots of ancient cults around different gods - a lot of ancient Irish/British myth stories were probably ancient gods stories/myths- they got down graded to fairies post christianity. Druids - who the Romans didn't like at all and who give us most info about them- were some kind of preisthood/religious/leaders elite in pre Roman Britain and bits of celtic Europe.
