Life Changing Cleaning - Why Didn't I Know?

I can't believe I didn't know about rubber brooms before now! No word of a lie, it has changed my life - picks up dog fur from the stairs better than any hoover. My carpet is like new. This, after spending £s on Dyson. Anyone else got any brilliant cleaning tips?

MikeUniformMike · 21/11/2020 13:26

This is how a garden chair came out using Pink Stuff and Scotch pads:
E cloths aren't really environmentally friendly. They shed fibres, known as microplastics, into the water, thus into rivers and oceans etc when they're washed. They're also totally unrecyclable and uncompostable, meaning they'll stay in landfill for hundreds of years. This all also applies to synthetic clothes. There are ways of mitigating the release of microplastics from cloths, though. This Good Housekeeping article is useful on the subject www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/consumer-advice/a32941472/microplastic-microfibers-pollution/
Yep. Years ago we all thought e cloths were the way forward. Sad

Benjispruce2 · 21/11/2020 13:54

Hadn’t realised that about e cloths but I’ve had mine years and not bought countless plastic bottles and chemicals. I guess it’s arguably better.

Really interesting. I have an e cloth mop in my basket for Dunelm right now.
The spray one is also a microfibre cloth type.

Apart from when using that bag, it seems inevitable that there will be release of fibres.

I got my rubber broom is Argos ... the perfect thing when your very blonde, long haired daughter has a black bedroom rug!

I secretly enjoy it. It's bloody therapeutic 😂
MikeUniformMike · 21/11/2020 14:06

I'm not sure if I enjoy it but it's a lot less hassle than emptying the vacuum cleaner. :-) I had everything neutral - pale carpet, curtains, sofa, bedcover, and so on. Then CharlieAlphaTango moved in.

I amazes me how well you can clean with just an e cloth and water.

Neither did I. I guess it is a balancing act against using other cleaning cloths and chemicals. Which is the least harmful to the environment?

Thank you , I remember my mum having a tin of ‘ pink stuff ‘ cream that was a bit grainy , but it wasn’t called pink stuff then

Very clever to call it pink stuff lol

Will give it a whirl !
Was it swafega? Used for cleaning oily dirty hands ✋

Blastandbollocks · 21/11/2020 18:40

Sheepskin rugs. I hoover it, but it's matted so can't get right in - any ideas?

Cooltalkin · 21/11/2020 18:42

@ThistleWitch

Nope, Swarfega was pink. First time I bought Pink Stuff I thought “Ah, this is Swarfega”.

@StinkySaurus

Any tips for getting rid of black mould on the windows? Including on the sealant?

Pink Swarfega!?! Confused
It's always been green hasn't it?
I keep meaning to buy some, the smell will take me back to my childhood.

Wavingnotdowning · 21/11/2020 20:46

@Blossomgate

For those asking about leather, I always use saddle soap - used not surprisingly to clean leather saddles😉
Oh no - just ordered saddle soap as well!!

@SOboredofcleaning

Any natural ways to keep my kettle limescale free please?
Citric acid.

Mandalorian · 21/11/2020 23:01

Swarfega!? No that was good stuff. The pink stuff is crap.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/11/2020 06:29

Swarfega and pink stuff aren't the same.

Swarfega is much runnier but I've never thought of using it for cleaning.

Might give it a go as DP bought a massive bottle from Costco that will probably outlast him. Agree that Pink Stuff seems useless, but I am very impressed with Elbow Grease spray.

peridito · 22/11/2020 07:56

another popping in to say Swarfega is green.

anyone remember Rosalex ? Now that was pink .

Sorry ,not in spirit of thread .

Halfwreckedbykids · 22/11/2020 08:01

I recently bought the flash bathroom cleaner spray with bleach.
I stood in the shower and sprayed, not too much but i couldnt breathe, i d a terrible reaction and lasted ages.
I m sorry to derail but anyone else experience this?
