What time is the meeting?

I saw this somewhere else. I've just asked my partner....I'm horrified --slightly dramatic- at his response!

What time do you think the meeting is?

Marmite27 · 21/11/2020 10:59

10:00?

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 21/11/2020 10:59

That is a completely different thing, though.

SOboredofcleaning · 21/11/2020 11:00

If you want to make it earlier I'd just say we will "meet at the earlier time of...." why be confusing?

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 21/11/2020 11:00

(The clocks moving and forward, that is)

SOboredofcleaning · 21/11/2020 11:01

If you are changing the time of the meeting then don't be so cryptic? People always interpret things differently. Obviously you would state the new time 🤷🏻‍♀️

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 21/11/2020 11:01

Oh fgs, I’ve not had my coffee yet and it’s showing! *back & forward, obviously.

SOboredofcleaning · 21/11/2020 11:03

@HollyandIvyandallthingsYule it's really not a COMPLETELY different thing. Hence the potential for confusion.
If you want people to make your meeting then don't just say "it's been brought forward" 🤷🏻‍♀️

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 21/11/2020 11:08

Yes, it really is. But I’m not going to argue about it. Smile

However I agree with you that being clear & concise is the far better option. And I also agree with those who have said just abolish the concept of work meetings - that would solve so many issues, and save so many manhours! Grin

notacooldad · 21/11/2020 11:09

I would have been 4 hours late because I would have turned up at 2!!
I see time as as being linear and moved forward from 12 to 2.
If they said can we bring the meeting back two hours I would have turned up at 10.
However I do checked what they meant!

HeronLanyon · 21/11/2020 11:10

I also say 2pm. Bizarrely in this context ‘back’ means further away. For me.

Bakeachocolatecaketoday · 21/11/2020 11:11

Ok, so try this one, relative phone up on Monday 1st and asks if they can visit and stay over "Next Saturday".

What day are they coming?

(spoiler) we called them on Saturday 6th, an hour after they were supposed to arrive to see if they were ok etc, and they were actually coming on Saturday 13th. "This Saturday" would apparently be the 6th and "Next Saturday" would be 13th.

In my book Next=the next one occurring, so today is Saturday 21st November, Next Friday to me would be 27th. My relative would think "Next Friday" is 4th Dec.

TheForgetfulCat · 21/11/2020 11:12

‘Brought forward’ once I take time to think about it, is 10am. But like everyone else I have to think about it.

Conversation in my office would be the much less ambiguous ‘can we make that meeting a bit earlier please?’

Any day in this week is ‘this’ (or alternatively Friday coming, for example)

Any day in next week is ‘next’ (or alternatively Friday week, for example)

Your relatives were correct.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 21/11/2020 11:21

Anyway I’m wasting too much time on this! Have a great day everyone!

IhateBoswell · 21/11/2020 11:21

“This Saturday”- the Saturday at the end of this week.

“Next Saturday”- the Saturday the week after. I agree with the relatives.

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 21/11/2020 11:22

10 a.m.

HeronLanyon · 21/11/2020 11:55

Re ‘Saturday’ for me there’s a king of ‘hump reset which happens on Monday morning. So if I was told ‘next Saturday’ on a Sunday I’d find it ambiguous and need always to check whether 6th or 13th.
If however next Saturday was said to me in a Monday it would be 13th in my mind.
Bloody hell how do we all meet up ! Guess it’s just as well we’re doing less of it due to lockdown !

Yes, I'd check do you mean Saturday coming, or the one after?
notacooldad · 21/11/2020 13:15

I would think that as well but would also check we had the same understanding.

Icenii · 21/11/2020 16:56

Next Saturday is surely the next Saturday, eg closest one?

DoTheNextRightThing · 21/11/2020 17:04

10am - but if someone said that to me, I would definitely clarify what time they meant because you just never know how someone else's mind works.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 21/11/2020 18:16

@Icenii

Next Saturday is surely the next Saturday, eg closest one?
No it really isn’t. It would mean Saturday of next week. Unless you’re already on Saturday this week in which case it means Saturday next week as well as the next Saturday coming...🙂
CodenameVillanelle · 21/11/2020 18:20

You are bringing it forward as in closer to you. Pushing it back it pushing it further away from you.

Milomonster · 21/11/2020 22:04

I’m with your dp and immediately though 2pm as I thought spring forward, pushing time forward/ahead. I’m amazed that so few agree Grin

notacooldad · 21/11/2020 22:50

Next Saturday is surely the next Saturday, eg closest one?
No that would be this Saturday!😂
