If a meeting at 12.00 is moved forward 2 hours

What time is the meeting?

I saw this somewhere else. I've just asked my partner....I'm horrified --slightly dramatic- at his response!

What time do you think the meeting is?

10am, although I had to force my brain away from thinking it was 2pm!

jojomolo · 18/11/2020 22:15

If it's brought forward it's earlier.

IliveonCoffee · 18/11/2020 22:15

My weirdo dp, thought it was 2pm. His argument being moving forward into the future. I was very confused, and can't get my head round the logic....

But I do see where others are coming from with the opposite being true for the clock changes... I think though I see the clocks going back as time itself going back so it was 01.00 goes to 02.00 and then back in time for an hour back to 01.00 a mini time travel if you will!

Preponed is a word! And not just in Indian English.

Definitely 10am.

My immediate thought was you’d say Brought Forward not Moved Forward, which is then much clearer.

CaptainCarp · 18/11/2020 22:18

I would say 10:00 but I've never thought about it in the sense of the clocks moving forward.

BackforGood · 18/11/2020 22:19

10am, but agree with others, I'd have said "bring the meeting forwards", which implies more clearly it is coming closer, ie, if you were walking along to the meeting, , you would get to it sooner.

bellagogosdead · 18/11/2020 22:23

It's one of those confusing expressions people use like 'early doors'

Casmama · 18/11/2020 22:25

I knew it was 10am but always have to think twice about it as it is not logical to me- forwards should mean forward into the future IMO.

EwwSprouts · 18/11/2020 22:25

"See I would say “bring the meeting forward”, you’re bringing it towards you so it’s closer. Much less ambiguous"

Agree.

m00rfarm · 18/11/2020 22:27

I always would say 10, but my boss at the time would mean 2pm

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 18/11/2020 22:28

It’s clearly 10 o’clock.

KrisKringlesLeftNostril · 18/11/2020 22:28

My first thought was 2pm, and then I re read the post more slowly and realised I'm an idiot.
obviously it's 10am.

chillied · 18/11/2020 22:30

clearly if you want people to actually turn up you're going to have to say 'hold the meeting earlier'

NoParticularPattern · 18/11/2020 22:31

See this is why I specify “bring it forward” or “push it back”.To me that makes more sense than moved forward/back since being would be towards you (ie closer in time) and push would be away (ie further away in time).

DodgeRainClouds · 18/11/2020 22:34

I thought obviously 10am. Just asked my husband and he said 2pm! WTF?!

PanamaPattie · 18/11/2020 22:37

If you move it forward 2 hours it's 2pm but if you bring it forward 2 hours it's 10am.

Anon22 · 18/11/2020 22:38

In the minority but without thinking about it would think 2pm (I'd recall spring forwards, fall back).

Surely its clearer and uses less words to say
"move the meeting to 10am" than
"move the meeting forward 2 hours"

jessstan1 · 18/11/2020 22:39

2pm.

If it is moved back, it would be 10am.

PattyPan · 18/11/2020 22:39

I would assume forward = earlier, whether you say brought or moved. So 10am. 2pm would be moving it back.

NiceandCalm · 18/11/2020 22:40

I originally thought 2pm as you are moving it forwards so -> rather than move it back

GrapevineFires · 18/11/2020 22:41

It is 10am, as you say.

But I'm getting a crazy familiar vibe here. Didn't someone ask the same question a month or two ago?

Anon22 · 18/11/2020 22:41

also, for example, if you were playing chess, if you moved the pawn forwards it would be moving further away from you.

SciFiScream · 18/11/2020 22:42

Moved forward = 10:00.

Move back = 14:00

PurpleFlower1983 · 18/11/2020 22:43

10am
