It's groundhog Day. This time yesterday I was queuing outside Next to collect my order, and now I'm back again to collect my second parcel.

My Mango order has arrived. Pleasingly, Mango use paper for their packages.

Sheusedtobesomeonelse · 19/11/2020 15:41

@MissConductUS I should go and see a dermatologist, I spend a fair bit in the sun in the summer even with suncream on and I seem to have picked up alot of sun spots, they have never been looked at, and probably should be..

My GP sent me to a cardiologist not long ago as i had never been for a check up, it's the only time i came out floating from a medical : he said i have the physique of a 20 year old (22 years later Grin) but still have a physical electrocardiogram to do in march.

MissConductUS · 19/11/2020 16:04

Sheusedtobesomeonelse You should see a dermatologist for a full body exam. The current guidance is an annual exam after age 35. Melanoma incidence has doubled in the last 40 years and no one really knows why.

Skin cancer screening: recommendations for data-driven screening guidelines and a review of the US Preventive Services Task Force controversy

Here's a brief excerpt:

Over the past four decades, melanoma incidence has increased by nearly 200% [2]. It is now the fifth most common invasive cancer in men and the seventh in women, with an estimated 76,380 new cases in the USA in 2016 [1,6]. About one in 33 men and one in 52 women in the USA will develop melanoma during their lifetime.

I've no reason to think the trends are any different in Europe or the UK.

I wish I had the physique of a 20 year old. Grin I'm surprised your GP didn't do the cardiogram as part of your annual exam. That's pretty standard here.

Lots of people are surprised when they develop medical problems in middle age. We've only evolved to stay healthy until we're a bit past child rearing age. After that evolution doesn't care what happens to us. We're really out of warranty by our mid 30's.

It just started to rain heavyly and got very windy. But all my plants are safely tucked away.

I just had a taster session Indonesian. You can read and pronounce everything, bc. the sounds are like German but there is almost nothing to recognize. Great fun!!!

forgetthehousework · 19/11/2020 16:36

My DH has cut up 5m of drainage pipe into 25cm lengths for me.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/11/2020 16:41

forget Why?

forgetthehousework · 19/11/2020 16:54

I'm going to decorate them to make extra large Christmas crackers to put up outside on our new front fence .
Mad but happy, that's me Grin.

Boredsilly · 19/11/2020 17:04

Deathraystare · 19/11/2020 17:06

So should I!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/11/2020 17:12

forget I see! Smile We don't do crackers here - not for Christmas that is - it's more a Sylvester (new years eve) thing

CoffeethenCrochet · 19/11/2020 18:16

Thank you @EggyPegg I'm working on the natural history blanket which is a crochet along written by Scheepjes. Just back home from dog walk along the beach.

Taswama · 19/11/2020 18:25

The invite for the virtual Christmas party at work arrived today. I'm on leave that day.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/11/2020 18:52

Ours is cancelled and it used to be dinner at a lovely restaurant with great food and lovely deserts.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/11/2020 18:53

PersisFord · 19/11/2020 19:33

thanksgiving thread

SilkieRabbits · 19/11/2020 19:52

Did about 4.5 hours of cleaning and also put up new curtains in our bedroom which match the bedspread and are duck egg with birds and flowers on them. Upstairs looks so much better now, DH was very impressed, DS was like Hmm why are you cleaning as electrician is coming. Its not just for the electrician it really needed a good tidy and clean. Still have to tackle downstairs but at least half done.

MissConductUS · 19/11/2020 20:10

@PersisFord

Thanks for the link. I've just posted on the thread with a link to here if anyone wants the mac & cheese recipe.

Impressive Silkie!!

I am DROOLING over thanksgiving recipes now. I am particularly intrigued by green bean casserole! And by all the regional differences in different areas. Do we have that in the UK? I suppose there are some regional food but I guess we are a much smaller country reallyz

Nydj · 19/11/2020 20:48

I am very keen to try the mac’n’cheese recipe as all (ok, two) previous attempts tasted like pasta in a very mildly cheesy sauce.
I received an email from J Parkers to say that they are preparing to send my order - I hope this means that my lily of the valley pips will be arriving soon. I am tickled by the fact that they are not called seeds, bulbs or tubers but are pips. One they arrive I can plant (sow?) them in a container as well as the grape hyacinths and tulip bulbs that arrived a few weeks ago then sit and wait for next spring as I have planted loads of bulbs this autumn in my small garden.

MissConductUS · 19/11/2020 20:49

I'm not a huge fan of green bean casserole. When I do green beans for a nice meal I steam them and finish them in a simple lemon butter sauce.

Regional food differences are huge in the US and are largely delivered by the nationalities that immigrated there. So lots of German food in Wisconsin, Mexican influence in the southwest, etc. New York is such a polyglot that you can eat anything here. Smile

It’s brilliant. I love having a little share in your lovely traditions. Someone on the other thread said it is a “homely celebration with every family’s own favourites” and I thought that was just lovely.

PersisFord · 19/11/2020 21:05

And lovely to have you to interpret it all for us @MissConductUS

Thank you. I'm trying out for the post of US ambassador to MN. Grin

One of my frustrations in my early days on MN was that so many posters here have such a two-dimensional, stereotyped picture of Americans. I hope that by participating here I've done a small bit to change that.

We really do cherish Thanksgiving for the focus on simplicity, family, and being mindful of what we have, not what we want. It's truly a lovely holiday and I'm so pleased I've inspired a few people here to celebrate it.

I strayed into the wrong type of thread by accident, and got all stressed. I’m sooo glad to be back here.

I’m trying to cuddle the dog, but he’s trying to sleep. I am having to settle for holding his paw. He says I’m needy, and he needs some space. Blush

Therainisback · 19/11/2020 22:03

I made spag bol for tea. I now have indigestion.

I finish work at 1 tomorrow.

I need to chase up the gas man and ring the double glazing man.
