To be fair the UK, countries generally cope with what is normal and don't cope with a 10 storm because it's not economically efficient to always be prepared for outliers. We had a snowmageddon in spring 2018 and everyone cleared out the supermarkets, stayed at home etc but if we expect the govt to be prepared to deal with it in the way that other countries do then individuals would also be expected to deal with it by having winter tyres and proper cold weather clothing etc and that's a lot of expense and preparedness for something that rarely happens and doesn't last very long when it does happen.

I am in Dunelm waiting for someone to find my click and collect fairy lights. I’m causing a hold up because they can’t find them.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 05/12/2020 10:36

We wanted to get up at 7, but it was so dark that we stayed in bed till 8.

I've done a bit of housework and DH intends to make goulash today.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/12/2020 10:40

That should have been '10 year storm' not '10 storm', I don't rate my storms out of 10.

Also, I've finally remembered to connect my new car up to the app on my phone and now I can tell it to heat up before I leave in the mornings. Grin

Squirrel26 · 05/12/2020 11:15

My fairy lights were nowhere to be found. Dunelm Man and I had a very British conversation where we both told each other in 5 different ways how strange that was, then we both apologised and he gave me a refund.

Paging MsConduct... Paging MsConduct... I hope she has the new thread warming in her toaster oven. Wink

I just pulled it out of the oven, so it's done. Smile

It's cold and raining here so I just did a very quick 20-minute run. I still come back with wet shoes and socks.

I'm off shortly to do some early errands, like picking up my wreath at the church and a quick grocery shop. If I was going to be MN in my PJ's all morning I would have waited for a few more posts to come on, but that would have been cutting it too close.

Re the winter weather, some southern US cities are like that. An inch or two of snow and they shut down completely. Here in the Hudson Highlands we'd have said the storm missed us. Grin

@mathanxiety

DD4 decided to go downstairs (from second floor apartment) to get the mail wearing her fuzzy socks, slipped and fell, now has a very sore ankle and bruised shoulder. I had already picked up the mail but she couldn't have known that.

It was only early 2019 but seems a lifetime away when the metropolitan area ('Chiberia') where I live was hit by the famous polar vortex. With the wind chill, it felt like -50F. They had to light railway tracks on fire to keep trains running. I park my car outdoors and had to go out wrapped up like the Michelin man to see if I could start it and drive around a bit to get the engine to warm up. At first I could coax it as fast as 5 mph and the inside of the windshield was quickly coated with a thick layer of ice from my breath. The second time I tried the car I stayed in my parking spot until I dealt with the interior icing problem before taking to the streets. Felt so relieved to get past February this year, and then...

DH was there for that storm. The hotel he was in struggled to keep the temperature above 60 especially the lobby and restaurant.

One of my friends gives utterly brilliant misspellings. He texted earlier "good day darline" which made me laugh inordinately.

I feel queen of the realm darline for today!

TrickyD · 06/12/2020 14:22

Learnt to play the ancient but still popular Italian card game, Scopa. Ordered some of the traditionally designed cards from Amazon to add authenticity.

EggyPegg · 06/12/2020 23:37

@TrickyD I love card games. I'm off to Google.

just checking you know there's a new thread...

I know, I didn't want these replies to go unanswered.

TenCornMaidens · 07/12/2020 18:41

well done

MissConductUS · 07/12/2020 18:49

This thread has just a smidge more room left, yes?

I think we should complete it so that it can be safely consigned to history.

EggyPegg · 07/12/2020 21:39

That was my other reason @MissConductUS. It bothered me that this one wasn't full.

soddingkitten · 07/12/2020 22:11

I’m in!

Sodding has gone off the chicken and chicken & duck pouches in his posh selection box. No idea why.

EggyPegg · 08/12/2020 06:42

Keeping you on your toes @soddingkitten. Wouldn't do to allow you to become complacent.

DH ordered DS2 some new school shoes on Sunday night as his have disintegrated at the heel. He paid for express delivery so that they would be here today (he wears trainers Monday and Tuesday because of PE) but still hasn't had a dispatch email. He is unimpressed by this service.

As I noted on the other boring thread, I had a package parcel take nine days to travel the roughly 200 miles from Massachusettes to NY. That works out to less than one mile per hour.

OP posts:
EggyPegg · 08/12/2020 14:50

The shoes have arrived. No dispatch email. Just one to say that it was on the couriers van and out for delivery.
@MissConductUS. That's an impressive speed. Quicker to go and get it yourself.

forgetthehousework · 08/12/2020 15:15

@Prokupatuscrakedatus

Eggy That's the name - I haven't looked yet. I am watching Bernadette Banner instead.

DH just recieved a call from sb thanking him for a book. It was sent off two years ago. No, the receiver is not a hermit in inner Mongolia.

Ah, another fan of Bernadette Banner? I think she's brilliant. I like Cathy Hay too.

In other news, which is really far too exciting for this thread, we now have a new boiler and central heating system. There are still a couple of jobs that need finishing off and, unfortunately, the main fire in the living room has been condemned and must be replaced, but we are warm!
And I've put up the Christmas decorations to celebrate.

We are having sausage, egg and chips for tea.

He's a cat-that's reason enough.
soddingkitten · 08/12/2020 18:21

Mystery solved! My lovely neighbour WhatsApped me a photo of Sodding in her kitchen eating Shyboy’s food earlier. He is utterly shameless. We have again offered assistance with fitting a chip-controlled cat flap, but she won’t have it.
