Oh! I am so slack. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

MissConductUS · 26/11/2020 21:08

HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you too Eggy and Persis!

Here's a picture of most of the feast on the stove hob. The Amish dinner rolls are in the oven warming. Note the temperature setting is F, not C.

Sodding, the butter/lemon/maple carrots were a huge hit. Every last one was eaten and I made a pound of them. The ham and mac & cheese were excellent. We have loads of m&c left for leftovers and enough ham to use on pizza this weekend. Here's the carrot recipe if you want to try it sometime. Just substitute two tablespoons of maple syrup for the honey.

@Nydj - the dish the mac & cheese is in is one of my best Corningware pieces, bought directly at the CMOG gift shop. It came with a Pyrex lid that I didn't need tonight.

Happy Thanksgiving all! Brief Encounter is on BBC4, I know what is going to happen so this is soothing and not exciting to watch.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 26/11/2020 21:27

Happy celebrations to all of you!!!

DD and I just assembled the shocking tree. We called him Willie, which only works bc. we do not speak English at home - it is an ordinary if old fashioned boy's name.

Spudlet · 26/11/2020 21:33

@PersisFord DH puts milk on puddings as well! He is always nonplussed that I find it so bizarre Grin Now I find there’s more that one of you milk pudding oddballs! Who knew 🤣

@Prokupatuscrakedatus That sucks that it hurts - I hope they get you rebooked and sorted out soon.

halfpasteleven · 26/11/2020 22:29

Your dinner looks delicious @MissConductUS
I hope you all enjoyed it especially as you were all together.
Yes DS had gastroenteritis - I spoke to my GP on the phone this evening and he said it can take 3-5 days to clear. DS is in much better form today and this eve so I'm hoping he is on track to be well enough to return to school on Monday.
It's a calm foggy night here and I'm glad my little family are all under the one roof and healthy and happy.

MissConductUS · 26/11/2020 23:38

@halfpasteleven It sounds like he has norovirus. Poor kid, that is very unpleasant.

Dinner was very good. DS had second helpings of everything. I'm really going to be spending more at the supermarket from now on. But it's lovely to have him home. Smile

This morning I have already been to the chiropractor. Progress is apparently "excellent" as the prognosis is usually 12-18 months recovery time - I'm unsure whether to be pleased or depressed by this.

We've just eaten a bacon sandwich and are about to embark on Project Housework. DH is markedly less enthusiastic about this than I am, but frankly that serves him right for doing part time hours.

MissConductUS · 27/11/2020 10:51

Mountains of DS's dirty laundry have appeared. Apparently, there was no point in doing laundry at uni for the last two weeks or so when he was coming home. The Miele is getting quite the workout.

It was a lovely morning for a run, warm enough to run in shorts and a long sleeve shirt.

The shopping has begun. I've ordered a new running rainjacket, gloves and a second pair of those lovely comfortable running bottoms/trousers from the merchant I splurged on a few weeks ago. Why, you may ask? Because I wanted to and it was all 30% off. Grin

I’ve just remembered that the high vis men said that they were going to replace the doors in the corridor outside my office this morning. I’ve been here since 8, and they are not. Unless I can’t see them because they aren’t wearing their high vis today.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 27/11/2020 10:57

Champagne That is good to hear!

I've done some housework, but it's getting warmer again so my head feels 'pre-hurty'.
DH anounced a zoom meeting for the whole evening tonight (good for him to get some work done and talk to / with people, as he does not qualify for financiall help)

For some reason this made me laugh far more than necessary Grin
MissConductUS · 27/11/2020 11:19

Champagne Apologies if I've missed it, but what are you seeing the chiropractor for and what prognosis were you given?

Christmas baking again today! It’s a bit early for me to start but I should have around 2 dozen mince pies on the go once the pastry has rested. Got the Kings Collage Choir on in the background. DH is horrified. He says it’s only the 27th of November.

Spoke to DM today who is in a tier 3 area and is only going to see anyone outdoors this Christmas, and is miserable about it (she’s worried for DBro and her DM so it’s not her being unreasonable or overly anxious here). So I need a bit of cheering up. Nice full cake tins often do the trick.

Squirrel26 · 27/11/2020 11:50

I find the maintenance men at work gently fascinating. Every so often one comes in and says ‘can I look at your tap?’ Um...sure you can. It’s still a tap. And it’s not really mine, we just happen to coexist in the same space.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 27/11/2020 12:07

They have dismanteled the compressor in our street.
The yards next door are all finished. Yay.
But - the water people started on water pipe maintenance at the top of the street. They brought an excavator (Bagger).

Sodding is selectively deaf, though can hear the microwave door slamming from 3 gardens away. (We freeze off his ill-gotten gains like stolen chicken breast to break the theft/reward link.)

Similarly, toddler DS1 went through a phase of not hearing instructions, requests etc when busy playing. Unsure whether to call the health visitor, I stood a few metres behind him and quietly opened a pack of chocolate buttons. Instant attention! 🙄

TenCornMaidens · 27/11/2020 13:01

Bought some poinsettias for the first time in my life.

Champagneforeveryone · 27/11/2020 13:12

@TenCornMaidens

Bought some poinsettias for the first time in my life.
It's a rocking time to be an adult isn't it ten Grin

I too am going to purchase poinsettias (though I'm no poinsettia virgin myself) DH and I are going to gift them to our lovely neighbours who are endlessly tolerant of DS's guitar / drum playing. Just a small token with their Christmas card to let them know how grateful we are, as both could make our lives really difficult if they chose to.

Champagneforeveryone · 27/11/2020 13:16

missconduct It was months ago now when I managed to slip a disc (the correct phrase is now prolapsed, but that sounds distinctly unpleasant) I like to imagine I did it doing something heroic, in actual fact I turned around to get something out the car Hmm

MissConductUS · 27/11/2020 15:02

Champagne I'm sorry to hear that. Back injuries are always tricky and slow to heal. I am a bit surprised by the 12-18 month timeframe. That seems quite a lot. If you're paying privately it might make sense to get a second opinion.

I'm off today, as are most people in the US. I've just done a big shop at the warehouse club and am off to the posh Italian grocery store to get their pizza dough, meatballs and a few other things. Now that DS is home pizza night now entails a large rectangular pizza and a smaller circular one, so the pizza supply chain has to be ramped up.

I can't have poinsettias in the house as they're poisonous to the cats, but I have ordered a decorated wreath from my church for the front door. We went with a really nice artificial Christmas tree about 10 years ago and never regretted it. It's still too early to put it up and most of my living room is occupied by a massive rowing machine (aka an "erg") that we took in when DD's rowing team stopped group practices due to covid. Now we have to find a way to return it, especially as DD plans to be off to uni in January. TBH I'm not sure if anyone remembers that we have it.

SilkieCat · 27/11/2020 15:09

Both the children are off today as school is closed.

DD has had a brace fitted and is adjusting her eating to non-chewy things.

Had spaghetti bol and garlic bread for lunch and about to have a cup of tea. Trying to get hold of electrician, trying being the key word.

Nydj · 27/11/2020 15:33

That you for the photo of the Corning dish, @MissConductUS. We have a few that look similar 😁 - as does every Inidian household that I have been over the past goodness knows how many years.

I lost my work mojo part way through the week so am glad to have finished work for the week. My lily of the valley pips have arrived so the plan is to pot them up this weekend. I will also plant grape hyacinth and tulip bulbs and that will bring all garden jobs to an end until next spring.

Friday night = pizza for dinner but with the added excitement of garlic bread this evening.

forgetthehousework · 27/11/2020 16:47

Well, the Christmas cards are all ready to post.
(Please don't hate me!)
