Yes. Confusingly he was called Albert hence Bertie but ruled as George VI

GrandUnion · 17/11/2020 12:47

Seriously?

Nosnogginginthekitchen · 17/11/2020 12:49

Obviously. Hence princesses Elizabeth and Margaret being his daughters...

ThomasHardyPerennial · 17/11/2020 12:49

Is Google broken today?

Lardlizard · 17/11/2020 12:49

I though so but thanks for clarifying

He was Albert Edward George or something like that

TeenPlusTwenties · 17/11/2020 12:52

He wasn't meant to be king as he was the second child.
His brother abdicated so he could marry Wallis Simpson, a divorcee.

BigCityLife · 17/11/2020 12:52

I don't actually know why he was King George. He was never supposed to be king so maybe King Albert just wasn't fancy enough?

RumJerrySailorRum · 17/11/2020 12:52

George was one of his middle names.

He became George VI to, allegedly restore faith in the Monarchy after his brothers abdication, to follow on frim his dad.

ohidoliketobe · 17/11/2020 12:54

It's common for royals to take on one of their middle name as their monarch name when they're crowned.

PumpkinsMum18 · 17/11/2020 12:57

Albert is a very Germanic name. It probably wasn’t a good idea to have a German sounding name for the King when WW2 was looming in the last 1930s..... George is a much more English name and also his father was George V

Lardlizard · 17/11/2020 13:00

Ok thanks that makes sense to me now

I believe it was common for monarchs to take on a Reginal name that wasn’t necessarily the name they used say-to-day, but the Queen decided not to. My knowledge is entirely from a vague memory of watching The Crown though Grin

TwentyViginti · 17/11/2020 13:07

Queen Victoria's first name was Alexandrina.

Fouroclockonamarblemorning · 17/11/2020 13:08

The royal family do quite a lot of being called one name and using another.

wowfudge · 17/11/2020 13:13

Regnal names are usually chosen so as to have positive associations or at least no negative ones. I think it is thought that Prince Charles is not likely to be King Charles because of his predecessors of that name.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 17/11/2020 13:14

Is he the King George all the playing fields are named after, and why?

ArtichokeAardvark · 17/11/2020 13:16

Why did you start a thread to ask a question that Google could have answered into seconds? Confused

ArtichokeAardvark · 17/11/2020 13:17

It's funny though, because as soon as he was born, the Queen knew that he would be her heir and would remain so, barring something unfortunate happening. She must have known that the name Charles had connotations.
wowfudge · 17/11/2020 13:20

He was the king during WWII and was very well-regarded generally. Buckingham Palace got bomb damaged and he and the Queen, the Queen Mother, visited bombed communities in order to help boost morale, etc. Lots of planned re-building work took place after the war which is probably why things were named after him.

chomalungma · 17/11/2020 13:22

Whenever I look at that - it's Princess Margaret who is played by the actress who plays Karen in Outnumbered - Ramona Marquez.

I love that film - and how powerfully it shows the impact of a speech impediment.

You can hear the actual speech he made at the end on YouTube
