I thought Diana, Princess of Wales was the title agreed for Princess Di after she divorced.

It was. Before her divorce, she was HRH The Princess of Wales or more informally HRH Diana, Princess of Wales. She was never Princess Diana.

Correction on the regnal numbers for William. There was an early King of Scotland called William, so it would be William IV in Scotland and William V in England for the next William.

@wowfudge

Regnal names are usually chosen so as to have positive associations or at least no negative ones. I think it is thought that Prince Charles is not likely to be King Charles because of his predecessors of that name.
You'd think of the association's were that awful they wouldn't pick the name to start with!

As a young woman, I quite fancied Charles the second after I saw one of his portraits.

HilaryThorpe · 17/11/2020 15:58

I am sure he will be King Charles. There are obviously negative associations with Charles I but why Charles II? The Merry Monarch?

peaceanddove · 17/11/2020 16:08

Edward VIII's first Christian name was actually Edward - David was one of his many middle names and his family and friends referred to him as David.

Technically speaking there is no such official title as Princess Diana of Wales, and never was. She should have been referred to as Diana, Princess of Wales or even just the Princess of Wales.

Farewelltoqualms · 17/11/2020 16:39

I read recently that Camilla is technically the Prince's of Wales now but it was too controversial for her to take the title after Diana's death so she has stuck with the Duchess of Cornwall.

SenecaFallsRedux · 17/11/2020 17:02

Princess Diana of Wales would be the daughter of a Prince of Wales named Diana.

Also Camilla is the Princess of Wales, no technical about it. She just chooses not to use the title, but she has plenty to choose from, including my personal favorite, Lady of the Isles.

Sorry to be pedantic but that is the meaning of technically surely? She is the Princess of Wales and chose not to use it, for obvious reasons.
ohdearmymistake · 17/11/2020 18:22

Diana correct name was Princess Charles but wouldn't have been used as she would have been know as HRH P o W. as she wasn't a royal in her own right only by marriage.

Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales and Countess of Chester, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Rothesay, Countess of Carrick, Baroness of Renfrew, Lady of the Isles, Princess of Scotland.

It was the press and public that named her Princess Diana.

Prince William Arthur Philip Louis

Prince Henry (Harry) Charles Albert David

Do you think the RF for Charles is Spaniel?

CassandraCross · 17/11/2020 18:28

@Peregrina

I thought that re the Scottish vs English business, they had decided to go for the highest number - so another King James would be James VII. Not that this seems very likely - for all that the Royal Family likes to make much of its Scottish connections, they don't seem to go for names used by Scottish kings of old. Imagine a Prince Malcolm for example, or a Prince Kenneth.
I think we should have a King DuncanGrin
ChristmasTsimmes · 17/11/2020 18:30

Oh i would like to be Princess of the Isles.

is that title going spare? I'd like to help out with spare titles.

I am very generous that way.

greyhills · 17/11/2020 18:34

@Hollyhocksarenotmessy

Is he the King George all the playing fields are named after, and why?
No, mostly they are named for King George V. If you look on Wikipedia under King George's Fields the explanation is there.

I only found this out 3 minutes ago

Charles II was a notorious womaniser. The association might not be ideal for someone who is infamous for having had a longstanding mistress during his first marriage.
HilaryThorpe · 17/11/2020 18:44

A few negative associations for some of the early Georges though? I don't think you would find any of the names of Kings which were entirely positive tbh. If you leave out all the ones who had mistresses you would have very few left.

nosswith · 17/11/2020 18:46

He was actually the husband of the Queen of the time, the Queen Consort, Elizabeth (nee Bowes-Lyon).

RocketHog · 17/11/2020 18:58

The Queen's full title is Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith. Mother of dragons lizards. Shock

Sorry yer maj, couldn't resist Grin

Wasn't Albert banned as a name as a king by Queen Victoria out of respect to Prince Albert. Possibly a law was made.

So princes got called Albert because it was a family name and also at birth he wasn't expected to be king. Then when he did become king he had to choose a different name
???????

I thought Victoria wanted her son to use the name Albert when he became King as her husband was not allowed to be King Albert under the rules of the time, but her son did not want be King Albert so chose Edward instead.
NotYourDawg · 17/11/2020 19:27

This is all very Game of Thrones isn't it Grin

CassandraCross · 17/11/2020 19:35

I always thought Henry VIII would have felt right at home in GoT!

NotYourDawg · 17/11/2020 19:43

The author definitely dipped into history for his character inspiration!

Do you mean George VI, the present Queen’s father? He wasn’t King because he was married to the Queen (Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon) - she was Queen because she was married to the King. He would have been the King even if he wasn’t married.
GreyishDays · 17/11/2020 20:22

Queen consort means ‘queen because she’s married to a king’.
I feel like I’m missing what @nosswith is trying to say.
