80s throwback box - help!

80shelpneeded · 16/11/2020 15:28

Hi all, for Christmas this year I'm planning on doing an 80s throwback box as he loves reminiscing and 80s is his favourite. He was born in 66. So far I have a Walkman, a few cassettes, couple of the tops films in the decade and a top of the pops disk as he's obsessed. The trouble is I'm only going off what I hear him speak about most as I'm only 20 (born in 2000) so I need help without directly asking him!Confused

The idea is he opens the box and is thrown back in time. Those of you who were a similar age in the 80's - what were your favourite things/ what would you be happy to see in the box?

Thanks!

One neon yellow and one neon pink sock. Farah pants and a pale pink cardigan (yes, really!)
Can you track down any 80s products like chocolate bars or drinks which were first marketed then?

80shelpneeded · 16/11/2020 15:36

@wowfudge
I'm seeing a lot of 80s retro sweet boxes but non of them look any good, mainly stuff you can still get so I could make my own. I'll check eBay, thanks you

Smash hits magazine.

MashedSweetSpud · 16/11/2020 15:41

Disco crisps and chipsticks were around in the 80’s. Jawbreakers and golf ball bubble gum were popular (I was born in the 70’s though) aswell as Hubba Bubba gum.

Clackers were a thing (two balls that clanged together) and everyone had a Rubix Cube.

Um Bongo drink cartons were popular, not sure if they are still around now.

Top of the pops annual
Charles and Di wedding memorabilia

A Rubik's cube.

Clackers.

Anything neon.

A Viennetta.

Angel Delight.

Sainsbury's has 80s style Christmas decorations atm - those baubles with silk thread.

Cadbury do a selection box with 4 of the vintage style wrappers (I think it's dairy milk, whole nut, fruit and nut, caramel).

EminyBOO · 16/11/2020 15:48

What about one of those foil Christmas garlands, you know, the ones that concertina out and you hand them from you ceiling.

A bottle of Babysham

Get him a UB40 so he can go and sign on the dole.

Clackers

Clackers were early 70s. They were a short-lived fad, and vanished very quickly.

I'd say get some original magazines or newspapers - you'll find lots on Ebay. Also, how about some cologne or aftershave that was made then and is still going now?

Madonnawiththebigboobies · 16/11/2020 15:59

Ooh a vesta chicken chow mein . The height of sophistication. Pop group badges. Have a look on Ebay lots of ideas .

Sparklingbrook · 16/11/2020 16:00

Atalune · 16/11/2020 16:05

What’s the rise wine that comes in a weird draw caraf thing? It’s in a super wide round bottle too?

Sparklingbrook · 16/11/2020 16:07

Bottle of Thunderbird.

Brefugee · 16/11/2020 16:26

Towelling tube socks, or sport socks with a red and blue ring round the top.
Aftershave - Paco Rabane was quite the thing in the 80s
Fisherman's rib jumpers, quite baggy, made with that speckled black/white yarn - to tuck into his acid washed jeans.

also, one of my favourite things from back then: the Nintendo game and watch electronic game (I had the one where you smacked moles on the head, but there are others)

GuillermoVanHelsing · 16/11/2020 16:51

A piano tie and some jeans with an appliquéd Fred Flinstone on the left thigh.

lazylump72 · 16/11/2020 16:59
