I wonder if Colombo was ever offered promotion?

I'm bored! I love Colombo and if I was Chief of Police I would have offered him promotion to at least Captain many times.

Of course, this would no doubt take Colombo out of the field where he is unsurpassable, and require him to do paperwork which I imagine isn't his forte. But his murder clearance rate must surely be the highest in the department so I hope there was some recognition of his achievements!

Any thoughts? Like I said, I'm bored!

For those who have seen all of them, you could read the books. I always find books are a little different to the TV version.

Books?!

That is excellent info.

I have seen this one after all but can't remember it all that well so that's a massive win!

Me too - and the mad dramatic piano music.

I didn't know there were books!

Ha ha. Laughing at the reasons why he doesn't get promoted. Grin

He spends far too long on a single case at a time.

To hijack the thread there are a lot of fictional characters who don't get promotion, though in RL this would happen eg Van der Valk, and Harry Kim in ST Voyager who although apparently part of the senior management team was never promoted from ensign!

Signed Soneone else with too much time on her hands.

PS oh and off at a tangent, P D James' Adam Dalgliesh would have been 80ish n the later books, when he married!

I have seen it after all but like you Gerbil I can't remember what happens. I wonder how they decide which ones to show again - some of them are repeated regularly so presumably those are the favourites ones.

The 70's settings make me feel strangely happy even though there is always murder afoot and conniving baddies. Leonard Nimoy was spectacularly sinister wasn't he?

I can't begin to explain how much I love Leonard. Spock was my first crush and it never wore off Smile

Just to tatty for a 1970s price department promotion. His superiors would have been worried about that cigar ash, dirty Mac, that car in their hard fought for allocated parking slots etc. He’d also be sure to wander off during important departmental meetings on the trail of a hint of a breakthrough , scratching his head.
I think they may also be worried he could only solve crimes where everyone else knows what happened and who dun it. Not a normal police occurance !

The one with Ruth Gordon locking her niece's unfaithful husband in the walk-in safe is my favourite, because she's such a goddamn broad. Absolute star. But I adore Martin Landau in 'Double Shock' and have a soft spot for the 'Bye Bye Sky High IQ Murder Case'. The later ones were a bit shit although 'Columbo Goes To College' is good.

Yes, they're comforting in a dated way.

Bloody brilliant episode.

A later one that is good IMO is 'Uneasy Lies the Crown' - a dental one from about 1990.

I don't think they were as worried about smoking back then so they would probably have overlooked the cigars. He would have driven all the administrators mad though wouldn't he, what with not taking his physicals, or updating his shooting skills etc.

I wonder what sort of patrolman he was. I can't imagine him running a suspect down. In fact, I can't imagine him running at all!

My parents had decanters like those, and glasses like the ones at the back there with those amber coloured stems.

I actually think he needs performance managing. He spends months on end fannying around on one case, while his colleagues are juggling hundreds of cases between them.

He's a career lifer, who had never been managed and it's just easier to leave him too it.

I love Columbo too. I think that one of his line managers might well have thought to put him up for promotion but someone higher up couldn’t get past the scruffy, “unprofessional” appearance so Vetoed it.

I’m sure I haven’t dreamed this but aren’t they supposed to be remaking Columbo with Mark Ruffalo?

Very rare to see him getting angry like that. See - he could deal with insubordinates if he needed to!
