I wonder if Colombo was ever offered promotion?

I'm bored! I love Colombo and if I was Chief of Police I would have offered him promotion to at least Captain many times.

Of course, this would no doubt take Colombo out of the field where he is unsurpassable, and require him to do paperwork which I imagine isn't his forte. But his murder clearance rate must surely be the highest in the department so I hope there was some recognition of his achievements!

Any thoughts? Like I said, I'm bored!

Oh poor Barbara - murdered in Colombo and murdered in real life :(.

I did know that, quite randomly. She plays an excellent role in Murder by the Book, low-level sinister when she lays out the blackmail plan.

Ruth Gordon's episode - Try and Catch Me - was on last Sunday. She is excellent in that; very cold-hearted and matter-of-fact.

Not Columbo, but I always wondered if Petrocelli ever got his house finished!

The late great Sir Terry Wogan often made references to Petrocelli's house, as it often changed height because it was shown out of sequence.
Love Columbo, love the Jack Cassidy and Ruth Gordon episodes.

I love Columbo and I like to delve into each episode’s cast and facts and trivia as I watch them.
Jack Cassidy died just a matter of months after The Great Santini episode. I read Shirley Jones’s autobiography (his second wife and David Cassidy’s mother in the Partridge family) and it was warts and all. He was a complex character, alcoholic, sex addict, narcissistic.
A few characters came to unfortunate ends. Barbara Colby who played Lily La Sanka in Murder by the book, Cassidy’s first Columbo appearance, was shot dead as she left her acting class late one night.

I missed this message somehow. I didn't know Jack Cassidy was David Cassidy's Dad 😯. And I didn't know he'd died in a fire either. How sad and horrible for his family.

So sad what happened to jack Cassidy. I don’t know you at all obviously age or anything but he was father to 70s ‘heart throb’ sensation David Cassidy (so if you are young you may not have heard of him....it was around the ‘osmonds’ era ) and he died a really horrible sad death in a fire in his apartment - makes me sad when I see him in columbo as he was a handsome man

He also played Ted Baxter's brother on Mary Tyler Moore.

This thread take me back to my childhood.

Did you get all of the NBC mysteries in the UK, Columbo, McLeod and McMillan and Wife?

I only like the ‘modern’ ‘columbo likes the nightlife’ just for a very early appearance of Matthew Rhys 😍

My absolute fave columbo though is the Johnny Cash episode ‘swan song’ when Johnny describes why he can’t take that Martin guitar in a pressurised air cabin....brilliant episode

@PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe

The one with Ruth Gordon locking her niece's unfaithful husband in the walk-in safe is my favourite, because she's such a goddamn broad. Absolute star. But I adore Martin Landau in 'Double Shock' and have a soft spot for the 'Bye Bye Sky High IQ Murder Case'. The later ones were a bit shit although 'Columbo Goes To College' is good.

That’s one I just can’t rewatch. Gives me claustrophobic nightmares!
@VicMackey the Doberman episode was How to dial a murder. And yes, he has a lot of phobias! He was struggling to look at crime scene pics in the London episode today - they were being passed across him when they were having tea!
Aaah okay thanks I think that dial a murder was in this afternoon . Was that the jack Cassidy (again) in one I only saw it briefly when visiting I don’t think I have seen that one all the way through. I have all of them downloaded though - in love the jack cassidy one where he kills his partner and then gets blackmailed by the woman in the general store where he has a lakeside cabin - and then gets her drunk on champagne and throws her off a boat on the lake - he always played a great villain. And he was also the great Santini illusionist (yep I’m a bit of a columbo geek) will watch the Doberman’s episode later I think 😀

I'm watching Colombo again :). The episode where the Dobermans kill a man when they hear a particular word. I'd forgotten this one, they don't show it that often. I like seeing Colombo interact with the dogs.

That sounds like the film ‘boys from brazil’ ...what columbo was that ?

Love columbo .....have you ever noticed he’s seasick and scared of heights and any other phobia that the plot throws at him like in the episode today when he went faint after being in that cable car (lovely Californian mountain locate where they filmed )

I love Columbo! My faves are the wicked surgeon one with Nimoy and the one where the architect calls Columbo's bluff and they dig up the foundations of a skyscraper to look for the body etc. I find him so funny when he pops up, annoying people. I am not keen on the 90s etc ones, he seems so old in those. I too heard the Mark Ruffalo rumour, but I think it was that his character in Zodiac was very Columbo- like and someone jumped to conclusions.

I love Columbo, I have the full dvd collection, just haven't got around to watching them all yet, and why do they always seem to show the same few episodes on TV? Hmm

Oh and I read a post in the week from a woman who, 40 years ago, was a chef in a ritzy hotel. One day her boss told her that one of the diners wanted to speak to her. It was Colombo (well, Peter Falk) and he complimented her on her cooking.

He was staying at the hotel for a while so they became sort of friends and she introduced him to her parents when they came to visit. Peter Falk and her Dad became friends, and if ever they were in the same city at the same time they would meet up and play golf :)
