Who still likes a sherry?

I love a sherry in the winter, late afternoon, preferably by the fire.

Anyone agree? 😬

(Nowadays it’s more likely to be G&T as DH drinks that but not sherry - but I only started to drink that when I got 40).

Ontheboardwalk · 15/11/2020 20:47

How much do you drink of Sherry? And yes I know I’m asking this on MN

I’ve never had Sherry only time I’ve seen someone drinking it is Mavis in class Corrie out of a super tiny glass

Starlitexpress · 15/11/2020 20:47

Do like a good px in winter and a drier one in the summer straight out of the fridge in the summer. Have some modern plain glass sherry glasses but mostly use small french picardi glasses in attempt to look sophisticated.

Px over vanilla ice cream is delicious and dinner party worthy!

I bought a pair of sherry glasses when we got our first house (after I had the set of 6 wine glasses of course!), and later a set of 2 port glasses. Over the years, 1 sherry and 1 port glass have been broken (DH doesn't drink sherry but we both drink port on special occasions). So now, I generally use the port glass for a decent sized glass of sherry. And if we are drinking port, I will just refill the sherry one for myself more often. Both were cheap glasses at the time, but not that common to see that size. I might try and get some nice port glasses, enough for when we have visitors, at some stage.

Ontheboardwork

It's less than wine, a 'serving' or unit is about 50ml.
Sherry glasses are much smaller than wine glasses.

It depends on which type you prefer.

I like dry Sherry chilled so something like a fino.
I'm not keen on sweet Sherry though.

Mariebarrone · 16/11/2020 11:19

I love a nice dry Sherry as dh is cooking Sunday lunch.

justgeton · 16/11/2020 13:54

Just been to Sainsbury's and bought a bottle of their own px as so many have recommended it. They didn't have any other than their TTD one.

Croft is still on offer for £10 a litre. I accidentally bought the Particular last week rather than the Original.. Particular is dryer and not quite as nice but I'm managing it 😉

Crofts is my preference but had Harveys Bristol growing up.

citycitycity · 16/11/2020 16:01

Popped into Tesco metro on the way to school pick up and picked a bottle of Harvey’s!

Sennedd · 16/11/2020 20:16

Aldi cream sherry, the Spanish one tastes just like Harvey’s but is chaeaper.

WildRosie · 19/11/2020 10:58

I'm going sherry shopping in Sainsbury's later on. Should I but Croft Original or Particular ?

Also, what nibbles suit sherry the best ?

WildRosie · 19/11/2020 10:58

buy

Mytholmroyd · 19/11/2020 11:01

Just got my case of Aldi special selection cream sherry for xmas - this is absolutely lovely and has won awards. Even got my teenage daughter drinking it with mince pies :-)

AdaColeman · 19/11/2020 11:25

@WildRosie
Good snacks to go with sherry....
Nuts of all types but especially smoked or salted almonds. There are always some interesting nut selections around at Christmas, nuts & raisins work well with sherry.
I like cubes of cheese with celery salt, also olives, and slices of salami.
Cheesy biscuits, or maybe a packet of Sainsbury's cheese snack mix are also good.

I'd start with Croft Original, you can always get the Particular next time!
Salud!

WildRosie · 19/11/2020 11:47

Much obliged Ada.

SpacePug · 19/11/2020 12:04

I haven't had sherry since my parents let me try a sip of theirs years ago. I'm looking on Tesco at their range now, their own brand is only £5.50 a litre! I'd have no idea which to get though, pale cream/medium/full cream, i also didn't realise sherry was a wine! I thought it was more of a liqueur type thing Blush I'm pregnant so not gonna be drinking til after January but I can dream and plan

WildRosie · 19/11/2020 16:27

It's your choice, Spacepug, but the occasional small sherry isn't going to be harmful. The staff at Sainsbury's managed to find me a bottle of Croft Original this afternoon when I was presented with an empty shelfSmile.

Sherry, port, madeira, ginger wine - I like them all. But I'm going to say this once, and I'm going to say it quietly. Harvey's orange aperitivo. It's sherry based, and tastes of bitter oranges.

Now I'm hoping there will still be some left in the shops next week now that I've told you all about it.

I'm seriously debating getting my coat on and nipping out...

I haven't been inside a supermarket for months but I think I might have to have a look for this one. I'll maybe sneak it into the next click and collect instead of a bottle of wine. Grin

Thanks to this thread, I dug out my bottle of Harveys Bristol Cream, and had a large glass, the other night! It was lovely.

I do think I need to drink a bit more, and buy a bit less - thanks to the dses buying me various bottles of nice alcohol over the years, and me not drinking very often, plus me buying myself things I fancied the look of, and making myself a big bottle of cherry gin liquour, my drinks collection has progressed beyond impressive and into Stern Look from the Doctor territory!! I should be ashamed. I'm not. Grin

Party at mine, when Covid is over?? WineWineWineWineWine

WildRosie · 20/11/2020 12:29

The Croft Original I had yesterday was rather good. Only two small glasses but they hit my bladder like a ton of bricks.
