Who still likes a sherry?

I love a sherry in the winter, late afternoon, preferably by the fire.

Anyone agree? 😬

Ooh I like sherry. Especially in winter when it's cold. DH has bought my annual bottle of Christmas sherry today. He prefers port.

Izzabellasasperella · 14/11/2020 18:43

Harveys Bristol cream is my Christmas treat. Some of it goes in our Christmas day sherry trifle too. I have a litre bottle in my Tescos delivery slot😊

Warning
Sherry is comes in pretty and sweet varieties and it seems pretty glasses on side tables next to old ladies are very tempting to small people. Now I am not allowed Sherry because my toddler once got sozzled at my mum’s. Please have a glass for me.

thegcatsmother · 14/11/2020 18:49

I love PX and had a Spanish friend who would buy me a bottle every time she went back to Spain.

I like drier sherry for day drinking though, and I adore white port, but not the chip dry.

gingercat02 · 14/11/2020 18:49

I've just lit the fire and poured a glass of wine on the back of this thread. I love port and maderia but sherry makes me think of Harvey's Bristol Cream pre Christmas lunch when I was a child (for the adults obvs). Can someone point me in the direction of a dry sherry starting point please

AdaColeman · 14/11/2020 18:53

For something a little different, take your bottle of Manzanilla or Fino sherry, have a copita or two, then pop in three or four dried chillis. 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶
Reseal the bottle, and leave for about two or three weeks.

Use the resulting nectar instead of vodka to make sublime Bloody Marys! Go easy on the Tabasco, as they will already have a chilli hit.

WildRosie · 14/11/2020 18:57

I haven't had sherry for years. I like Fino provided it isn't absolutely bone-dry but Amontillado is a little too sweet for my palate. My Mum had the right idea - half and half in a reasonably-sized glass.

QC and Enver Cream used to be heavily advertised in December. I haven't seen Enver Cream since the Hinge and Bracket ads.

justgeton · 14/11/2020 19:04

Oh I need to go to Sainsbury's and expand my sherry collection.... 😀

My auntie used to let us kids have sherry and lemonade on high days and holidays. And I mean enough of it to make your eyes go crossed.

Imissmoominmama · 14/11/2020 19:09

I love Tio Pepe; it reminds me of being at my grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve. I also really enjoy dry Madeira wine- especially when I’m in Madeira!

Tristatearea · 14/11/2020 19:11

Oh God this is me. I’m particularly fond of Pedro Ximenez and Lustau (are they the same thing? I don’t have any idea about grape varieties - anyone with lots of Sherry knowledge?) Particularly at Christmas for wrapping and in front of the fire after a long walk..

I haven’t tried many dry sherries but have a couple of recipes that need them so have a bottle of Waitrose bog standard in the cupboard...I’d be really interested in recommendations for a lovely Christmas morning dry Sherry?

MinnieMountain · 14/11/2020 19:29

I’ve had a very dry oloroso from M&S and a Lustau East India Solero (sweet) on the go since September. All the Sherry drinking in Poldark reminded me how much I like it Grin

MIL likes hers so dry I’m surprised it’s a liquid.

Haha! I've just bought sometoday. Sainsbury's Finest with my double up vouchers.

laudemio · 14/11/2020 19:53

Yes lovely!

MinnieMountain · 14/11/2020 19:54

On closer inspection, my M&S dry oloroso was made by Lustau. So I’m sticking with anything by them now.

MrsGrindah · 14/11/2020 19:58

Me too! But I could drink a pint not those piddly little glasses.

ThousandsAreSailing · 14/11/2020 20:00

I love a tea time pick me up sherry. Not over ice though, I like it as a winter warmer
Also ginger wine. I love a ginger wine by the fire

LimpLettice · 14/11/2020 20:08

I love all Sherry and have quite a few charity shop glasses! Tio Pepe in the summer, Harvey's or something a bit posher but creamy sweet when it's cold, mmmm. Also rather partial to a Moscatel, we buy a Portuguese Moscatel de Setubal and it's like warmed liquid toffee raisins. Co sleeping at the mo so not drinking at all but I have a bottle at the ready for when I'm free!

notanotherlasagne · 14/11/2020 20:13

Christmas morning: oloroso or amontillado are dry and very nutty - very nice with salted almonds or chorizo etc
Lunch: fino or manzanilla with seafood
Pudding: moscatel or Pedro ximenez (moscatel slightly less sweet) - both also amazing over vanilla ice cream. Canasta cream is lovely.
Married to a Sherry educator (yes it's actually a job!) and live part time in Sherry region of Spain.
All supermarket sherries are from great producers and really competitively priced.

Love Sherry (can you tell?)

sunsalutations · 14/11/2020 20:15

Yes! Love Sherry
And Madeira
Just before dinner on a Friday, Sat and Sun

Some new suggestions on this thread for me to try here - thank you!

LilacPebbles · 14/11/2020 20:41

I've never had one. I've seen the glasses before- do you down it like a shot or sip it? Why is the glass small?

Alonelonelyloner · 14/11/2020 20:45

I have found my people.

SHERRY IS LIFE!

kayakingmum · 14/11/2020 20:49

If I visit my parents on a Sunday I nearly always have a Harveys Bristol cream before my Mum's roast dinner :) That's the only time I have it.
