Who still likes a sherry?

I love a sherry in the winter, late afternoon, preferably by the fire.

Anyone agree? 😬

When I was at uni we used to go to a small shop ( we called it the Wee Man) where you could get cheap Sherry in your receptacle of choice. Me and ( then to be ) DH partook on a regular basis. I have not had Sherry in a long time and this thread has brought it all back. I think a bottle of Harvey's bristol cream is calling to me!

I'm a sherry lover! I have twee glasses and enjoy the sweet dark sherry and pale dry one. It warms the cockles. Reminds me so much of my grandmothers.

Afwan · 14/11/2020 21:17

Tried loads but I love Tesco cream sherry! Never have it in my Tesco, DM always picks us some up. Lovely little something before dinner.

Oooh Sherry

notanotherlasagne · 14/11/2020 21:29

Also, drink Sherry in a wine glass! Does not need to go in a schooner. Or whatever you want, but it's not a spirit - you don't need a tiny glass...

Caramelblonde · 14/11/2020 23:15

@icedaisy That's such a lovely tradition. Made me quite emotional. My Gran and Auntie always drank Harvey's Bristol Cream after Christmas Dinner. Such a nice memory tonight.

WinWinnieTheWay · 14/11/2020 23:30

Me - over ice!

mathanxiety · 14/11/2020 23:30

@LilacPebbles, you sip it, and you can sip it from a mug if you prefer.
Wink

When I used to work as a nurse, we’d get sherry dispensed in brown medicine bottles from pharmacy. Patients would be prescribed 10 or 20mls as an appetite stimulant. I always loved the smell!
Then, when I was pregnant, I had a craving for sherry. I obviously wouldn’t drink it, so instead I’d keep a small measure in a little bottle and sniff it to satisfy the craving Blush.
I still love a sherry.....Croft original for me.

Beecham · 14/11/2020 23:38

Medium dry sherry with cheddars - reminds me of my grandparents. As soon as it's autumn I buy a bottle. I love it!

AllGongNoDinner · 14/11/2020 23:38

I’ve just bought some manzilla Sherry stuff mentioned upthread for our Christmas espresso martinis

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 14/11/2020 23:50

Ahhh, another sherry lover here: we always have some in the drinks cabinet and I also have sherry glasses - mine are modern and sleek rather than retro, although I'm thinking I maybe need both...

My most beloved Grandma always had sherry and snacks before dinner, and once we hit 18, we'd get included, so it reminds me of feeling looked after and indulged, and always feels utterly civilised: sherry for me is about taking one's time, making the most of the rituals of life...

Then we spent a fabulous holiday near Jerez, which just cemented my sherry love.

Mine's a waitrose Amontillado if you're pouring... over ice if poss.

YouBoggleMyMind · 14/11/2020 23:57

I love Harvey's Bristol Cream Sherry, especially at Christmas and usually while I cook a roast 😍

DramaAlpaca · 15/11/2020 00:00

It's a Christmas tradition for me to have a couple of glasses of sherry over ice while cooking Christmas dinner. I don't drink it any other time of year.

Rememberallball · 15/11/2020 02:07

When we were kids the place we stayed at on holiday (in Cornwall!!) the owner would leave my parents a plastic keg of cheap Sherry and a box of After Eight’s as a welcome gift. Would occasionally get given a small glass - but then our parents would also give us a small glass of pomagne at Christmas!!

Since then I’ve gained a love of fino Sherry and been to a few bodegas on holiday so tried a few. One particularly memorable trip they scheduled the Sherry tasting first so we were there before 10am - 55 people catered for and only about 25 drinking due to the time of day (my type of event!!) anyway, it was December and the bodega weren’t very busy but he opened all these bottles. Those of us who liked the Sherry on offer were given all the opened bottles to take away (on top of what we bought!!) I think I got 6 open bottles of fino as the only person who really liked it and there was 1 on every table and all opened bottles were poured into each other. Was a great cruise after that with a glass or two while getting ready for dinner every night!!

Thinking I might add a bottle or two to my Christmas shopping deliveries!

WildRosie · 15/11/2020 17:29

Croft Original is £10.00 per litre in Sainbury's. I think Harvey's Bristol Cream is too.

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 15/11/2020 17:31

Sherry fan here.

Letseatgrandma · 15/11/2020 17:35

Love a Croft Original!

I actually prefer the Tesco/Sainsbos/Asda own version (pale cream) as it tastes just as nice and it so much cheaper!

LilacPebbles · 15/11/2020 17:36

I'm definitely going to take up sherry drinking after this. MN knows best...

Mydogisagentleman · 15/11/2020 18:37

Me and DH are planning to moved to Spain, Cadiz Jerez region.
This year we have had 5 booked flights cancelled.
Each time I have got a selection of sherry and drowned my sorrows

IndieTara · 15/11/2020 18:48

Ooh must add a bottle to
My Shopping

PenguinsOnParade · 15/11/2020 19:03

I always buy one for cooking at Christmas but make sure to buy a nicer one for drinking so the rest of the bottle slowly disappears over the year. DH is a fan of white port too so we always have a bottle of that in the house as well.

citycitycity · 15/11/2020 19:07

I was looking at sherry in Waitrose this weekend but as a newbie had no idea what to buy. Thanks to this thread I think I'll start with an own brand or Harvey's and then experiment.

quince2figs · 15/11/2020 20:39

Inspired by this thread, bought a bottle of pale cream from M&S (only option they had in stock).
Delicious couple of tiny glasses before dinner!

BiddyPop · 15/11/2020 20:43

I’m another cream sherry person. Started on the Harvey’s Bristol cream by DGM (I was in my 30s when she died). And given a very nice Lustau Old East India in a verrry posh restaurant (Harvey’s was nowhere near smart enough) which is what I buy nowadays. For those odd Sunday late afternoons when I am gently stirring something simmering slowly or actually sitting with DH for a quite 20 minutes before dinner (quite rare, but there are some weeks it happens).

awaynboilyurheid · 15/11/2020 20:44

Love a Sherry, Husband and I like to say Sherry Niles? As in Frasier!
Croft original with ice and some olives and pre dinner snacks is lovely! Waitrose do a nice pale cream Sherry too.
