I can't find a thread for this year's competition, and I'll never be able to get all the answers by myself. Please help! caboodle.nationalbooktokens.com/hiddenbooks/?competition=16

You've got one word too many there.

I CANNOT get the cereal girls who're not sisters and are set in Nigeria

Is there a secret hidden bonus one this year?

OP posts:
lostandfound55 · 12/11/2020 16:52

@MaudTheInvincible they are sisters.

lostandfound55 · 12/11/2020 16:53

Only have those two!!

@MaudTheInvincible i googled books set in nigeria and then it came up in a list in goodreads, it was obvious once i saw it
family relation and what is she doing to the cereal?

TinyTear · 12/11/2020 16:54

@lostandfound55 what is in the window? thomas is the main character of that book

BlueEyeshadow · 12/11/2020 16:55

The cereal girls ARE sisters. You could say that one is trampling it to... ??

TinyTear · 12/11/2020 16:55

Got the Canal one!!!

just need the crayfish

TinyTear · 12/11/2020 16:56

GOT IT! without any DMs

thanks for the clues, you people never disappoint!
thanks for the great clues!!!

lostandfound55 · 12/11/2020 16:57

Thanks all I’ve just finished.

MaudTheInvincible · 12/11/2020 17:01

Thank you everyone! Got it from a list of books set in Nigeria on Goodreads in the end. I must have misread an earlier clue and was googling all sorts of non-sisterly family relationships + serial killers and getting nowhere 😂

OP posts:
TimeIhadaNameChange · 12/11/2020 17:03

@MaudTheInvincible - they ARE sisters. More pertinantly, who is the one stamping on the cereal?

Cereal sounds like...? What 'cereal' somethings often feature in fiction? How could she be related to the other girl?

TuesdaysWell · 12/11/2020 17:04

@TinyTear

Got the Canal one!!!

just need the crayfish

A Southern US dialect term for crayfish is the big clue.
CountFosco · 12/11/2020 17:05

Thanks all. Much groaning when I got the cereal one!

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/11/2020 17:05

The other word for crayfish is not a word used in the UK. Sounds like Southern US to me. Once you get that you'll probably know it.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/11/2020 17:09

I have three left to get:
Frankenstein
Bookshop
Bees

Help!!!!

Friolero · 12/11/2020 17:12

Just finished it. Thanks for all the clues, I really struggled with the cereal one, the three women and the Frankenstein but got there in the end!

TuesdaysWell · 12/11/2020 17:13

@ApolloandDaphne, the bees have nothing to do with the novel in question. Combine the word 'Bee' with what the symbol the bees are forming traditionally represents, to make the one-word title of a very famous, very harrowing American novel by a Nobel Prize winner.

AlwaysWinterNeverChristmas · 12/11/2020 17:14

I got them all but this year I depended on clues on this thread and on Twitter. In previous years I usually got about half on my own steam and then went online for help. Some of the clues are terribly obscure

Friolero · 12/11/2020 17:16

Apollo for the bookshop, say the name of the bookshop out loud, it’s one word.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/11/2020 17:16

Got it now, thanks! Only two to get.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/11/2020 17:17

@Friolero

Apollo for the bookshop, say the name of the bookshop out loud, it’s one word.
I have said it out loud so many times! I think it was said upthread that it doesn't work in a Scottish accent?
Friolero · 12/11/2020 17:19

The bookshop is also a place name in the US

TuesdaysWell · 12/11/2020 17:19

It doesn't work if you have a rhotic accent. Insert an 'r' into 'all'. Also, the bookshop is irrelevant, it's just the name which forms a one-word title of a modernist classic.

CountFosco · 12/11/2020 17:21

No, it doesn't work in a Scottish accent. Remember the English don't pronounce the letter 'r'. It's a classic about a long lived person.
