To ask if you change your Christmas theme every year?

We've had the same the last two years but I want traditional red and golds this year but OH thinks it's a waste of money (he hates Christmas) I don't feel like the blues and blush we normally have are that christmassy

How often do you all change your theme?

OP posts:
LolaSmiles · 11/11/2020 20:16

Never.
I don't see the appeal in binning perfectly decent decorations (and even those given to charity shops probably won't get extra life), but then we don't have a strong theme either. Our baubles are a range of colours and we have white lights.

The issue with themes in my opinion is they date or people go off them and it's more and more stuff which doesnt get used.

Retiremental · 11/11/2020 20:18

Does an explosion in a tinsel factory with 20 years worth of handmade decorations and a lopsided angel count as a theme?

PurpleDaisies · 11/11/2020 20:19

No. The theme is always Christmas.

Definitely. It's my theme too.
Brogues · 11/11/2020 20:21

Yes but I don’t bin the decorations or give them away (why would I?) I have a nice little collection of a few colours stored so I can mix and match or whatever depending on mood or if the kids bring home a special decoration. They change yearly I suppose but sometimes just a slight tweak.

DelphineWalsh · 11/11/2020 20:22

I thought the theme of Christmas was Christmas.

tofuschnitzel · 11/11/2020 20:22

Never, that seems like a huge waste of money to me. I don't have the spare cash or storage space for boxes and boxes of decorations!

As a previous poster has said, my theme is "Christmas" every year.

DramaAlpaca · 11/11/2020 20:24

No. My decorations are full of memories and it's nice revisiting them when we get them out every year. I usually buy one new decoration every year to add to my collection.

lazylinguist · 11/11/2020 20:24

No. The theme is always Christmas.

^ This. I love Christmas, but it would seem very wasteful to ditch all your decorations every couple of years and buy new ones. I always tended to have mostly red and gold tree decorations, but red really doesn't go with my living room now. But I didn't buy new stuff, I just use only the gold ones!

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 11/11/2020 20:26

I used to, i probably had enough decorations for 4 trees and did 2. My themes across the years were traditional, novelty, pastel, winter wonderland, frozen theme, red/white, rustic. And I'd just pick the "posh" baubles that would go with that and then put in the cheapie ones around it in the colours that would go. So I had 3 big boxes big box of multi coloured, champagne/gold/silver and red. Now I have kids. I have one tree. And nothing goes, nearly everything has a date or personalisation on it and i love it equally. Although I fantasise about the day we'll have space and it'll be safe for 3 trees.

ComeOnBabyHauntMyBubble · 11/11/2020 20:26

I normally alternate between colours, so I have two sets. I don't bin the other one,why would I?

This year I did the big mistake of letting DD pick so getting set number 3. It was supposed to be purple, instead it's going to look like an unicorn puked all over it. Grin

CountFosco · 11/11/2020 20:26

We started off with a lovely selection of expensive baubles in gold, silver and blue which we added to each year. Then we had children. The beautiful baubles (some of which are now over 20 years old) are still taken out each year but are now taken over by all the (even more precious) handmade saltdough stars, painted pinecones, pom pom robins, felt stockings etc. The only theme is 'this is our life', each bauble is individual and reminds us of our past. Love it. Hoping we'll be able to pass them on at some point.

LolaSmiles · 11/11/2020 20:27

Same here.

We have some nice decorations from pre DC that we will get back out when they are bigger, but otherwise our christmas collection is something we've grown over time.

Rockbird · 11/11/2020 20:27

No very traditional here. Red, silver and gold and we just add to it every year.

Flaunch · 11/11/2020 20:28

Never, I’m very classic ‘red, green and gold’ so over just got really nice glass decorations over time and keep using them.

purplecorkheart · 11/11/2020 20:30

Nope. I tend to buy goods once. My Christmas decorations were expensive when I bought them ten years ago but use them every year and intend to use them for many more and pass them along eventually. (Actually just thought about it and some of them are 19 years old.)

StrippedFridge · 11/11/2020 20:31

Never. Bad for the planet.

Also, the children adore the comfort of it always being the same. I like to think that when they've moved out they will come back for Christmas and feel warmly enveloped in the familiarity.

myhobbyisouting · 11/11/2020 20:31

The blue and blush was your first mistake.

As for Christmas themes....there is a MNetter who redecorates for Christmas! It's fabulous TrickyD

You go for it OP, but don't bin the old baubles, reuse, craft with them - maybe school can use them for handprint baubles?

Nearly everybody I know has had the same Christmas decorations for 20 odd years! Plus a few add-ons and a few bits and pieces occasionally.

why would you change every year or every other year? it's so incredibly wasteful and not very green and recyclable.

I can't believe that you honestly think this is okay.

LolalovesLondon · 11/11/2020 20:36

Colour scheme? What colour scheme?!
I have bought two or three new decorations every year for the last 25 years.
I have a good collection. All mismatched.

stargirl1701 · 11/11/2020 20:37

Never.

We try not to buy anything new so this idea is incredible to me. 😳

Forestdweller11 · 11/11/2020 20:37

We have two sets that are used on rotation.
Silver and white
Red and green

Rotation isn't strict.

I usually go a bit mad at work with a pink Christmas tree and turquoise baubles plus a more traditional red and green decorated tree that is very blingy and generally ott. I also decorate the fireplaces as they aren't lit. Am WFH so won't be doing that this year.

janetmendoza · 11/11/2020 20:39

No theme. I treat myself to one new decoration a year (bauble). And some of my decorations are as old as me.

floppybit · 11/11/2020 20:42

No, no theme! Same stuff each year. Perhaps treat myself to a new posh glass bauble or two each year
