Do you have a favourite hymn or hymns ?

I'm not remotely religious so asking this question probably makes me a hypocrite but anyway. Most of us were exposed to the rite-of-passage primary school dirges such as When A Knight Won His Spurs (I'm not sure that's even a hymn) and The Golden Cockerel but I'd be surprised if the likes of these featured in a Christian Church service. But, to answer my own question, I think Abide With Me is my favourite, followed closely by Morning Has Broken. I concede these might be popular choices but I don't know that many hymns to begin with Halo.

I had tickets to Rend Collective in Birmingham in September 😢 they've postponed til next October so something to look forward to. They are incredible live.

I love this one, it really sums up the moment for us all as churches at the moment. I miss singing together but sing along to YouTube a lot and it helps.

Two more
Here is Love vast as the ocean
When peace like a river

MyPersona · 12/11/2020 10:24

This thread has made me so emotional. I love the newer ones from my children’s schooldays and church

Here I am Lord
As I kneel before you
Seek ye first
Living Lord
Bind us together
Walk with me oh my Lord
Be still for the presence of the Lord

But also from my schooldays when we didn’t sing in Mass but we did in school, and at guides when church parade sometimes took place in the C of E or Methodist church.

Tell out my soul
How great thou art
Guide me oh they great Jehovah
Oh Lord and father of mankind

And my favourite Christmas carol is Oh come all ye faithful, sung on Christmas morning so we could sing all the verses. Yea Lord we greet thee, born this happy morning...

I miss singing.

@WildRosie I have a wonderful newspaper article about the funeral of my great grandad in 1908. It is so detailed and eloquently written that you could be there. I live coincidentally just across the road from where the old chapel where it took place was. My point is that O God our help in ages past was one of the hymns. And rock of ages.

WildRosie · 12/11/2020 17:06

Thankyou, Dr. Coconut. I only really knew OGOHIAP by the title until recently but, having heard a church performance, it is actually quite familiar.

@MostIneptThatEverStepped I have messaged Neil Hannon & asked him to make an album of hymns. Have offered my mother's Presbyterian traybakes for the album launch.

If you don't ask you don't get 😂. I'll let you know if he's up for it

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 12/11/2020 17:39

@buckeejit

Wow I like your style!! Heartily approve.

DistantShores1 · 12/11/2020 17:43

As the deer pants for the water
Be thou my vision
Lead us Heavenly Father lead us
In Christ alone.

Cantata · 12/11/2020 19:44

Dear Lord and Father is indeed a good one. When I was at school, I used to love the mental pictures it conjured up, as well (the Syrian Sea; earthquake, wind and fire; the heats of our desires, etc). The same was true of I Vow To Thee My Country (I used to imagine flowy-haired princesses in golden manacles for "and soul by soul and silently/her shining bounds increase" - I was very little, and didn't realise then that "she" was a country!)

EstoPerpetua · 12/11/2020 19:48

I will never, ever forget the boys at my son's school bellowing Jerusalem in Chapel at the start of the summer "speech day" type event. Grin

BrassicaBabe · 12/11/2020 20:13

Some absolutely amazing hymns here. Might have to create myself a hymn playlist on the back of this.

Have we had..
Oh for a thousand tongues to sing my great redeemers praise.

(Jerusalem. An anthem. Not a hymn. Great anthem. But definitely an anthem Grin)

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 12/11/2020 20:35

I loved a Hymn at my Catholic Primary school can't remember the name but we all used to sing the chorus Bake us the bread Mary Mary . Haven't heard it sang in my church for years . Another one I loved was Go the Mass is ended. My all time favourite is Here I am Lord I well up whilst singing or listening to it . Beautiful.

baggies · 12/11/2020 21:03

Living lord
Make me a channel of your peace
The lords my shepherd
Lord of all hopefulness

These spring to mind, but a lot already mentioned too.

Mollscroll · 12/11/2020 21:13

Does anyone remember this TV series :

m.youtube.com/watch?v=z3G3L1za05k

It captures the atmosphere of school hymns every morning so we’ll - that’s what I remember.

ParkheadParadise · 12/11/2020 21:18

@Swingoutsistersledge2
Was it The Baker Women?
Make us the bread, Mary, Mary.
Make us the bread, we need to be fed.

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 12/11/2020 21:50

@ParkheadParadise . Yes thats the one . Thanks

Oh no. Jerulsalem is almost an anthem, but isn't quite an anthem. Sorry.

But I'd love a thread about anthems. There are some absolute bangers.

I miss hymns. I don't want to go back to church until my voice can soar.

Be still for the presence of the Lord
Oh Jesus I have promised (jaunty version)
Morning has broken
The Lord is my shepherd

There was one dirge I hated at school. II think it involved "let my people go"?

Carol services will be something I sorely miss this year. I was always in the school choir and involved in those services. Uni was fun in its own way, but when I reached early adulthood, I couldn't find my Christmas mood. A flyer for the loca church dropped through the door and I went to the carol service and found my Christmas mood, and have been to something pretty much every year since. Probably excepting the year I had a Christmas baby and baby blues reduced me to tears over Away in a Manger because little Lord Jesus had no crib for a bed Grin. The Christmas morning service often makes me cry since then.

Cecilia2016 · 12/11/2020 22:24

I love hymns and here is my favourites ones!

In Christ alone
Great is thy faithfulness
Give me oil in heart keep me burning
What a friend we have in Jesus
Worship
Way maker
The goodness of god

Darklane · 12/11/2020 22:55

What a lovely thread.

Not sure anyone has mentioned one of mine,
Angel voices ever singing
Round thy throne of light...always reminds me of the church bells pealing. Had it at our wedding, such a happy hymn.

Guide Me Oh Thou Great Redeemer to Cwm Rhondda, belted out in church in my dad’s deep Welsh voice.

And
Jesus Bids Us Shine With a Clear Pure Light
Like a Little Candle Burning in the Night, learned at Sunshine Corner, a Baptist Sunday School I was sent to by my DG when I went to live with her after my DM died when I was little. Isn’t it funny how you never forget the words?

My favourite carol is In the Deep Mid Winter, no contest, used to sing that to the stock when out to check them at bedtime on snowy Christmas Eves.

I already have a hymn/worship music play list Blush I'll be adding to it on the back of this thread though. So many hymns I'd forgotten about!
CarlottaFerrari · 13/11/2020 20:53

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned my favourite:

O Love, that wilt not let me go

www.hymnal.net/en/hymn/h/432

Can’t sing it without crying. Which is awkward when you’re in the choir.

(Did somebody say “anthem”? Book me a place in that thread...)

Cantata · 13/11/2020 20:55

I don't know that one, @CarlottaFerrari. But thanks for the mention.

I think I mentioned Anthems. It'll be psalm settings next. Grin

Wildswim · 13/11/2020 21:01

Maybe Bach cantatas?

CarlottaFerrari · 13/11/2020 21:02

@Cantata Let’s not forget canticles, responses, mass settings...
