Do you have a favourite hymn or hymns ?

I'm not remotely religious so asking this question probably makes me a hypocrite but anyway. Most of us were exposed to the rite-of-passage primary school dirges such as When A Knight Won His Spurs (I'm not sure that's even a hymn) and The Golden Cockerel but I'd be surprised if the likes of these featured in a Christian Church service. But, to answer my own question, I think Abide With Me is my favourite, followed closely by Morning Has Broken. I concede these might be popular choices but I don't know that many hymns to begin with Halo.

"Be still, my soul, The Lord is on thy side
Bear patiently, the cross of grief or pain
Leave to thy God, to order and provide
In every change, He faithful will remain
Be still, my soul, thy best thy heavenly friend
Through thorny ways, leads to a joyful end [...]"

When a knight won his spurs.

Always loved this. If I can't find my phone charger, I soothe my irritation by thinking of the line 'no charger have I and no sword by my side'.

littlelapwing could it be this ?
No not that one. It goes:

Waves are beating on the shore
Crashing into foam
Seagulls squealing, wheeling high
Sailors coming home
Boats are bobbing up and down
Safe in harbour now
Some are riding out the storm
Dipping bow on bow
Ahhhhhh

God has made the sea so vast
Oceans roaring swell
Cliffs of chalk and granite rocks
Sailors know them well
......

@LadyGAgain

Shine Jesus Shine - a modern and uplifting happy flappy number!

Oh holy night! - makes me weep

Guide me oh thou great redeemer - general all round greatness.

Love hymns. Not very religious but love to sing them.

I love shine Jesus shine so much I chose it for my wedding. I'm one of the founding members of my hospital choir and oh holy night is one of my favourite Christmas songs along with oh Mary did you know
Oreservoir · 11/11/2020 07:52

How Great thou Art
Anthony Warlow singing O Holy Night

I can never hear Lord of the Dance without thinking of a teacher who's pupil was singing
I am the Lord of the damp settee.

My own dd used to sing Away in a manger
No crisp for a bed.

FatimaMunchy · 11/11/2020 07:56

When peace like a river attendeth my way,
Or sorrows like sea billows roll,
Whatever my lot thou hast taught me to know
It is well, it is well with my soul.
(Old fashioned version, not the mucked about new one).
The Servant King 'hands that flung stars into space, to cruel nails surrendered' GK at his best.

LauraBassi · 11/11/2020 07:57

I loved school hymns!

When a knight won his spurs
We are climbing Jesus ladder
Lots of the dance - my fave!

LauraBassi · 11/11/2020 07:57

Lord of the dance **

Morning has broken
Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
Praise the Lord, the King of Heaven
Make me a channel of your peace
We plough the fields
Lord of all hopefulness

Lovely memories of primary school :)

My favourite Christmas carol is Hark the herald angels sing, cos of the links to the OT passages

I know the words to so many hymns and worship songs and I prefer uplifting ones and not dirges!

Fantastic list! Love all of these

I have a visceral reaction against anything that mentions, or even alludes indirectly to, sinners and salvation so that can make hymns a difficult area!

I do like this though for approaching the transcendent through music -

Lux aeterna (choral setting of Elgar's Nimrod).

HeronLanyon · 11/11/2020 08:10

littlelapwing in place of actual work I have made it my mission to find this.
It is in a book series (not sure which one) called Come and Praise. Series of school assembly books used in 80s/90s. There a few you tube vids - don’t know if this hymn is included in any. Scott mills tweeted about school assemblies and several replied with this hymn as a memory - a couple of years ago. Amazing how we remember lyrics so clearly !

I love “if I were a butterfly”
I know it’s very much a child’s gospel song, but it makes me smile every time I hear it.

I also love “when the saints go marching in”
And the classic “ave Maria” is beautiful.

Mysa74 · 11/11/2020 08:25

Does anyone else know it?

WildRosie · 11/11/2020 08:28

I see Amazing Grace has had one or two mentions. The best version is the 1972 single recorded by The Pipes and Drums and Military Band of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (gasp - I think that's right). Although AG is often associated with Scotland and the USA, the words (at least) came from an Englishman, John Newton.

@BlueDaysTillChristmas

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.

Is there any line more perfect than ‘Forgive our foolish sins’?

I thought it was "Forgive our foolish ways" ?
brushandmop · 11/11/2020 08:37

Seek ye first is a lovely modern hymn

Great thread - bringing back a lot of memories

Dannii2531 · 11/11/2020 08:54

@buckeejit

Some great ones that Id forgotten on here-will add to my Spotify playlist tomorrow.

Does anyone have any recommended choirs/singers to listen to for hymns on Spotify?

Also, can't help but mention O Holy Night

I listen to the playlists Hymns old and new and Songs of Praise: must loved hymns. If you want to try Christian music instead of hymns the playlist Christian mix is good as it has a lot of different artists on it.

Artists I listen to include: Matt Redman, YFriday, Rend Collective,Chris Tomlin and Soul Survivor.

I hope this is a help.

Madhairday · 11/11/2020 09:02

Here is love vast as the ocean is so beautiful.

Lampzade · 11/11/2020 09:07

@Ahrightsoted

Mine is "here I am Lord"

Here I am, Lord
Is it I, Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night
I will go, Lord
If You lead me
I will hold Your people in my heart

It was sung at my grandmothers funereal and both kids holy communion, always makes me feel a bit tearful

Good choice .I love that hymn, particularly when it is sung by children
