What do you have for dinner on a weekend?

We used to get a takeaway and eat out a lot at weekends but we've cut back on that in the pandemic due to financial constraints. However, I can't have a normal 'week day' meal on a Friday or Saturday night for dinner!

It has to be something like a supermarket pizza, home made burgers, thai curry etc.

Does anybody else do this?

Not really, depends what we are doing, how much time we have (plenty at the moment!), did make more of an effort this weekend and we had a fondue one evening which made a nice change. I am currently furloughed from my job in retail but I usually work Saturdays so the evening meal would be something quick and easy, maybe a spag Bol with the Bol prepared earlier & frozen.

No a great fan of takeaways, mainly because none are very nice where we live.

Tomcullenisahero · 09/11/2020 18:10

Friday nights dinner is just normal for us but Saturday is always a take away, it's law in our houseGrin. We always have a roast on Sunday

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/11/2020 18:11

Sunday roast (usually)
Saturday night Chinese
Friday night (whatever I can chuck in the slow cooker)

Lazysundayafternoons · 09/11/2020 18:19

Yes, we eat healthy food Monday to Thursday.

Friday is takeaway or if I'm organised its Tescos finest chicken korma with samosa and chips.

Saturday we usually eat a healthy meal but one that takes longer to cook.

Sunday I do a roast dinner anywhere between 1 and 3 o clock, then we have pizza around 7 before an early night.

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 09/11/2020 19:10

Me too! No weekday dishes allowed at the weekend.
Attempt to eat healthily M - T, F takeaway and then weekend is things we wouldn’t have time for in the week

Squirrelblanket · 09/11/2020 19:16

Yes we do this, but the examples you've given are things we'd eat as a quick meal on a normal week night.

Weekend for would be something a bit more elaborate, unhealthy or a takeaway. So like this weekend we're having a takeaway on Friday and individual beef wellingtons on Saturday. Not decided on Sunday yet.

hashbrownsandwich · 09/11/2020 19:22

Weekend food is completely different to weekday food. If I was served stir fry on a Friday night I would cry.

Friday night we always do something spicy and lots of different dishes so maybe Mexican (chilli/pulled pork, retried beans dip, salsa, guacamole, rice, tortillas) or if we do kebab we make our own koftas, flat breads and tzaziki.

Saturday is pizza (homemade dough) and film night if the older kids are at home, if they're away we do steak and chips with chimmichuri.

Sunday tends to be something along the lines of a roast but basically a potato and veg dinner. Maybe pie if I'm in the mood.

SpookyRhubarbYoghurt · 09/11/2020 19:23

I like cooking and am a good cook (no matter what DS says Angry 0 but I like to make an effort at the weekend. Usually a roast of some sort. I might bake a cake. I sometimes cook ahead for the week and freeze meals.

Pascha · 09/11/2020 19:24

Saturday DH organises dinner, so it tends to be takeaway from the local pub or pizza. Sunday I tend to cook a big family meal.

I'm happy as long as I don't have to deal with both days

Yes to there definitely being things I wouldn’t eat on a weekend.

tempnamechange98765 · 09/11/2020 19:28

Yes same, it has to be a "weekend" style meal!

Friday and Sunday is usually something healthy/homemade but not a "weekday" meal, maybe like pasta or a nice jambalaya or curry. But Saturday night has to be something treatish like pizza, something with chips etc. Usually supermarket rather than take away, we've had more takeaways since lockdown but still fewer than once a month.

MrDarcysMa · 09/11/2020 19:29

Thanks for the ideas.
DH is veggie so I like having meat on a weekend, which is why takeaways are a good option but trying to save ££ .

I'm really shocked by this. I had no idea you'd cry if you had a stir fry on a Friday! And you all have take always Friday and Saturday.
We have take aways once a month, if that.

PurpleDaisies · 09/11/2020 19:36

Since the lockdown, we’ve done Friday fake away. I agree that your Friday meals would be weekday ones here, or they’d be souped up for the weekend with extra sides. Weekend pizza has garlic bread, fancy salads, olives etc. Weekend burgers get onion rings, home made coleslaw. Weekend curry gets onion bhajis, samosas, poppadums, Bombay mix, homemade naan...

I’ve enjoyed trying Wagamama’s wok from hone recipes.

Sarahandduck18 · 09/11/2020 19:39

I’ve never thought of different food on different days.

I have whatever I want on whatever day I want.

clipclop5 · 09/11/2020 19:41

Friday we just have a normal dinner
Saturday is usually either a takeaway (Mexican/ fish & chips/ pizza) or ready meals
Sunday we will go out to a restaurant or order a Chinese

frustrationcentral · 09/11/2020 19:42

Friday is just whatever we fancy

Saturday is normally a take away. If it isn't - because we've had one in the week or been out for a meal- then we'd get ready meals or something

Sunday - usually a roast or cottage pie etc

Breathmiller · 09/11/2020 19:50

We're the same here.
Often found to be deliberating what to have on a Friday and when something like Macaroni cheese is suggested its met with "nah, that's a Tuesday night dinner , its not a Friday night dinner- oh no!" Grin
It doesn't even have to be particularly fancy, it just has a Friday night or a Saturday night feel to it. We would have stir fry though, with a lovely spicy sauce. That doesn't feel like a weekday meal to me. I think because we would have it as a home made alternative to a chinese takeaway.
So thai curries, curries, pizzas, nachos, fajitas, hot dogs with spicy onions and wedges, burgers (dh makes the meat ones with all sorts of fancy extras).
We often have picky things on a Saturday. Or something a bit fancier if one of us wants to cook all day. Sundays are often a roast.

I suppose what we wouldn't have would be pasta and sauce, baked potatoes, pie and mash, soup, shepherd's pie..etc. These are all weekday meals.

We will have a takeaway probably more often than we should especially at the moment. Not every week because the choice is poor here and it's expensive but if I didn't have to worry about the cost or lockdown, I would happily eat out every weekend or get takeaway.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 09/11/2020 19:53

No it varies enormously here, there are no set rules. There could be one person at home, or four people at home, or friends round for dinner.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 09/11/2020 19:55

but we hardly ever have takeaways (3 here since before the start of lockdown).

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 09/11/2020 19:55

Monday to Thursday - healthy home made meals from Hairy Dieters, weight watchers, pinch of Nom etc. Friday takeaway. Saturday something that we’ve been inspired by on Saturday kitchen and Sunday has to be a roast with all of the trimmings 😋

BlueCrispsareSandV · 09/11/2020 19:58

DD always wants chips on Friday, Saturday is a normal meal but something I have to prepare like spag bol or meatballs. Sunday is a roast day.

gingercat02 · 09/11/2020 20:04

Takeaway on Fridays and something we can eat in front of the telly on Saturday - fajitas or similar. Sunday's vary, roast dinner in the winter all sorts in the summer

ClinkeyMonkey · 09/11/2020 20:22

Fridays and Sundays are like any other day in our house. Just whatever isn't too much like what we had the night before!

But Saturday is usually pizza night. Homemade with the base mixed in the bread maker, so not too much of a faff. With salad and coleslaw etc.

Occasionally, for a change, I make veggie chilli and we have tacos/tortillas and all those lovely sour cream, salsa and guacamole dips with grated cheese etc. I make a giant pot of the chilli, so that we can freeze some and have a proper lazy dinner a couple of times.
