What do you have for dinner on a weekend?

We used to get a takeaway and eat out a lot at weekends but we've cut back on that in the pandemic due to financial constraints. However, I can't have a normal 'week day' meal on a Friday or Saturday night for dinner!

It has to be something like a supermarket pizza, home made burgers, thai curry etc.

Does anybody else do this?

This weekend we had;
Pizza Friday,
Chilli with dips nachos etc
Sunday roast.

Friday/Sunday are the same every week and Saturday we have something that resembles what we could get from a takeaway (without spending £30+) so could be curry, fish and chips, kebab etc.

Breathmiller · 11/11/2020 15:07

Oh yes clinkeymonkey chilli with all the trimmings. We all love that here.
I think that's what elevates it from a weekday meal to a weekend meal. All the extras.
We wouldn't be against a chilli during the week if we fancied it but would have a quick bowl with rice or even just tortilla chips if being extra lazy.

But the weekend we would make guacamole, hone made salsa, sometimes two kinds, refried beans, cheese, rice, tortilla chips, sour cream, jalapeños. Maybe a (virgin or otherwise) mohjito or mocktail to go with it.

Does anyone else do a 'rubbish' night?
We all get a drink/juice of our choice, a sweetie treat and crisps on a Friday. I always hate bumping into anyone on the Friday night treat shop. They must think we're the unhealthiest people on the planet. I feel like having a sign saying " my tuesday shop has spinach in it, honest" Grin

Friday is usually nachos or something similar, Saturday is always home made pizza and nibbles whilst watching a film. Sunday we normally have home made burgers, either beef or chicken. We are actually more likely to have a take away in the week when we've forgotten to get something out for dinner can't be arsed!

WhatHaveIFound · 11/11/2020 16:28

Friday night is generally an easy meal as it's always the end of a busy week. So something like supermarket pizza, fishfinger sandwiches or veggie chilli & wedges.

On Saturdays I might try out new recipes or cook a curry. Then on Sundays we'll be on leftovers, a normal meal or DH/DD will be in charge of cooking.

BlackInk · 11/11/2020 16:29

No weekend specials here. We just cook/eat what we feel like and have time for on the day, whatever the day.

MrsR87 · 11/11/2020 16:34

We do the idea of a weekend tea. I like it to be more special that a weekday tea. Weekday teas are generally quicker and healthier whereas weekend dinners are generally something that needs longer/more luxurious/more calories!

A weekend dinner for us would be:
Homemade pizza
Homemade chicken or doner kebab
Pulled pork
Slow roasted brisket beef
Blue cheese burgers
Steak and chips with a homemade sauce
Venison in a stroganoff sauce
A homemade pie of some sort
Club sandwiches and chips
Homemade curry

Occasionally we will have a takeaway! 🥰

I've not had a take away in 15 years (rural and broke) apart from Fish & Chips 1x a month (my chippy is cheap: £4.50 for a huge F&C which feeds two of us - it's bliss not to cook and delicious too :)
But I like to have basic chinese or indian style food on a Sat eve.
I will cook it (badly I suspect) or get a yellow sticker supermarket one.
Sunday is Roast Lunch and (late) Afternoon tea with home made cake.
Silly really, if you have food it doesnt really matter what day it is.
But, somehow, that is my preference if at all possible.

fruitypancake · 11/11/2020 16:49

We have just started Gousto deliveries.. it's really good and feels like a treat as it results in something more elaborate than you would normally cook. Also is pretty reasonable at £30 for 2x meals for 4. Think I've got a discount code if you're interested

Ragwort · 11/11/2020 18:33

Breath I love 'rubbish' nights Blush, usually when my DH is away as he is rather formal about evening meals Grin, of course with lockdown & WFH he's not away very often these days. We are celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary tonight with a lovely, home cooked meal (DH preparing it) but he's away on a business trip tomorrow & DS and I already planning our 'rubbish' meal!

KyraGoose · 11/11/2020 18:34

Generally things that take a little more time to make. Lasagne, roast dinners, risotto? Often have a pudding too to make it more 'weekend special'.

ColouringPencils · 11/11/2020 18:53

Yes, definitely have different rules Mon-Thurs than at the weekend. I didn't really realise other people did this!

We got in the habit of Pizza Friday when it used to be a busy night of kids' activities. They have been cancelled since March, but Pizza Friday has remained and now often includes some other unhealthy sides.

Saturday is a day for experimenting with a new recipe or a treat recipe that takes a long time. Often with sides too. So maybe a nice curry with extras. I would do curry in the week too, but a completely different kind of curry and no sides.

Sunday is roast or something 'roast-like'.

Rarely do puddings, except for Tuesdays when GBBO is on.

Mon-Thurs (minus Tuesday pudding) are fairly healthy Blush.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 11/11/2020 18:57

DH usually makes a big chili on a Friday for tacos then we have enchiladas or something else with it on the Saturday. Or I'll make a curry or a roast or shepherd's pie.
Takeaway in maybe once a month.

CoronaBollox · 11/11/2020 19:03

OP I'm the same. I always find it strange when someone says they're having sausage and mash for example, it's just not a weekend meal. (Yes I'm aware it is and that I'm the strange one)

We get takeaways but at the start of the pandemic we went for either indian meal for 2 from Tesco, pizzas, spicy curries, homemade egg fried rice etc.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 11/11/2020 19:30

This question has been asked before OP, and it's an eye opener!

Most people do have a different weekend menu, but some people think that's bonkers, and have spag bol, salmon and new potatoes, pasta bake etc ON A SATURDAY 😱😱😱😱

Who are these people?!

We always have "special' Friday & weekend meals - Either takeout, or decent burgers, chips, coleslaw, onion rings etc. Yum 😎

Pyewhacket · 11/11/2020 19:39

Friday is fish and chips
Saturday is pot luck - what ever we have in the fridge/freeza
Sunday is roast dinner.

gingajewel · 11/11/2020 19:47

We have a take away every Saturday! We cook every single day, both work full time and have small kids, Saturday is my day off!!! We also have snacks infront of the tv on a Saturday night! Friday is freezer food as I go food shopping and Sunday is a roast or steak and jackets normally!

PurpleDaisies · 11/11/2020 19:51

Most people do have a different weekend menu, but some people think that's bonkers, and have spag bol, salmon and new potatoes, pasta bake etc ON A SATURDAY😱😱😱😱

I’d make Saturday spaghetti bolognese but a fancied up version with homemade focaccia and posh olive oil/balsamic with antipasti to start, garlic bread and a nice salad on the side, then tiramisu for pudding. Plus wine.

Weekday spag bol is just that.

goose1964 · 11/11/2020 19:52

Friday is an upgrade on moral meals, fajitas, kedgeree , Spanish chicken etc. Saturday night is always a homemade curry or chilli.

BlueBoar · 11/11/2020 19:54

I’m from Northern Ireland so Saturday as a child was always pastie supper. Our pasties are super spicy (peppery) pork mince burgers in batter. I miss them sooooooo much.

Pepperwand · 11/11/2020 20:03

We do this too, Monday to Thursday try to keep meals quick, cheap and reasonably healthy so pasta with vegetables, jacket potatoes, stir frys etc. Friday is usually "freezer tapas" ie something frozen that's zero effort to cook so pizza, breaded fish and oven chips etc. Saturday anything goes, could be a takeaway, this week it's hot dogs. If pasta it would be tortelloni and garlic bread. Sunday tend to make something that takes more time so curries, casseroles, roast, pies etc.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/11/2020 20:06

Friday night is usually Fakeaway - so fried rice/curry/fried chicken/burgers - but homemade because we live in the sticks...

Saturday is a good night to try new recipes that take a bit more effort or hands-on time - I love to cook, but don't always have the time in the week.

Sunday is always a roast, unless it's a pie or a proper lasagne (with fresh pasta, etc) - except in the hottest days of summer when I put roasts away and do grills instead 😁

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/11/2020 20:08

This Friday is different however, as it's DH's birthday and he wants pork chops which are his most favourite thing ever 😍

ClinkeyMonkey · 11/11/2020 20:09

@BlueBoar I'm in NI. We always had something from the chip shop on a Saturday when I was growing up and I nearly always chose a pastie supper. They were so tastyGrin

MyGazeboisLeaking · 11/11/2020 20:14

Well that sounds delicious @PurpleDaisies and I will absolutely be round to yours on Saturday for that!

PurpleDaisies · 11/11/2020 20:16

When lockdown rules allow @MyGazeboisLeaking! I’ve never mastered cooking for two so there’s always masses.
