Disgusting comment shamal

I don't think people are saying having cosmetic surgery is a bad thing in itself. That's another debate with a lot of grey areas. Its more about the effects of becoming unrecognisable or stiff-faced for an actor, and why women are under so much more pressure to do it.

There is a "surgery face" that both women and men can get, where they just look unnatural and unnerving, and it distracts from their performance. If you're watching a drama and just thinking about how much work the lead has had done, it's not very convincing.

Still going to watch it though! I love watching HG and the clothes sound great.

Agree about Alison Steadman. Absolute star, older woman complete with face, and at the top of her game.

IcedPurple · 06/11/2020 10:20

@Doodar

If you’re a beautiful actress there’s so much pressure to stay perfect and beautiful. Actress’s not noted for their beauty, Julie Walters, Helen Mirren, Judy Dench etc have less pressure I think, and still get work.
Helen Mirren not noted for her beauty?

She's been a sex symbol since the early 1970s.

Aone · 06/11/2020 10:30

I think Nicole Kidman is a character actress. She generally gets cast because of her talent rather than her looks.

Lemonlady22 · 06/11/2020 11:53

I watched Aquaman yesterday, and she looked younger than her son lol

workshy44 · 06/11/2020 12:36

My friends cousin is a plastic surgeon in hollywood and she said EVERYONE, man, women and child has had work done
Also the ones that say they have had nothing done are usually the worst.
Some work is just more subtle than others. Sure just look at any photos of them prior to fame, they look completely different. Even the young ones

Dozer · 06/11/2020 12:54

That’s horrifying re. DC.

IcedPurple · 06/11/2020 13:10

My friends cousin is a plastic surgeon in hollywood and she said EVERYONE, man, women and child has had work done

And they all have hair extensions.

Being a sex symbol is very different to being beautiful. Helen mirren is not noted for her beauty, the poster is correct. Being known for being sexy is very different.

Actually I’ve seen Helen mirren in the flesh. At Heathrow airport, she’s tiny and I can’t lie, if she wasn’t famous, you’d not look twice. I get no one is looking sexy as they trudge through Heathrow at night, but she looked just like a normal older woman to be honest. Not some sex bomb.

She was also having an argument with her husband as the area was deserted they were walking through, until I came in the opposite direction directly towards them, which is what caused me to look in my rush, I passed them about three feet away. She literally in real life looks like a small very thin grey haired fairly average woman.

I’m fairly sure if Nicole Kidman was coming towards me, arguing with her husband, my reaction would be very different.

Mirren just looks thin, grey haired, pale, and as said, fairly average in real life, without her hair, make up and clothes done carefully,

I really think a lot of that sex symbol stuff is smoke and mirrors.

IcedPurple · 06/11/2020 13:22

I disagree, but in any case I think the discussion is a bit pedantic. Mirren was/is certainly known for her looks, as well as her acting talent of course.

Lots of famous beauties look fairly ordinary without professional hair, make up and designer clothes. Just google 'stars without makeup' for examples. But that's not the point. People don't form opinions on the beauty of film stars from how they look trudging through Heathrow after an 8 hour flight. They do so on the basis of how they look on screen, with a whole team of professionals making them look good. How they look 'in real life' is irrelevant.

I’m fairly sure if Nicole Kidman was coming towards me, arguing with her husband, my reaction would be very different.

Kidman's height alone is going to make her stand out in any crowd. Sadly, however, these days her face is mostly the creation of doctors and surgeons.

wowfudge · 06/11/2020 13:27

Nicole Kidman is a leading lady, a versatile one, not a character actress.

I'd say Helen Mirren is beautiful - beauty and prettiness are two different things. A great beauty may not be pretty. Someone can be pretty without being beautiful.

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2020 13:28

As is mirrens, let’s not pretend she’s aged naturally. Just the starting point was different, mirrens not went as far, but she’s had her fair share, let’s be honest.

You're making it sound like it's some Mirren versus Kidman contest!

I cited Helen Mirren above as an example of someone who's had 'good work'. She still looks her age, just a very attractive 'well-preserved' woman her age. She's definitely had a jaw lift and some eye work too, but she hasn't stuffed her face full of fillers and still has some wrinkles. I think it's the fillers which look so awful. A good face lift can look really good. Jane Fonda is another example.

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2020 14:01

Hmm, I don’t think it is, simply these two women were being discussed.

Confused
fuckedandbombed · 06/11/2020 17:50

I'm late 40s and am genetically blessed . No wrinkles. (Yes really . No wrinkles yet!!! . High cheek bones and I get compliments a lot re my age and how old I look . Not a boast . Just the way I'm made . I feel ancient. !)

I would never rule out a bit if work . But I'd want my face to move and express. Nicole Kidman is beautiful. (I aren't ! Just young looking!).
I recently sent my daughter my wedding pics from when I was 19 . You can still tell I'm me !
With Nicole I feel like she looks different to her younger self .

I've no aversion to Botox or fillers at all . I will probably go down that route when I feel the need. But I'd always want to look like me . And I'd want my face to move . It's sad really that such a talented actress has resorted to such extremes . Im pretty sure she would be beautiful without - and tall, willowy . Having said that she does look good and I'm enjoying the undoing - she's a great actress.

But she’s never going to look like she did at 19 now she’s 53.

I’m fifty one, I look very different to what I did as a teenager, my face is a lot thinner and more defined, and quite frankly older obviously, my hair is different, which also changes your look.

Yes she looked different in her teens ant twenties but you can still tell it’s her.

It’s not a competition on how young you personally look and how well you’re ageing.

Yes she’s looked bad before, frozen and puffy but right now let’s be honest, she looks great. And she’s still recongnisable as her.

You’re not in competition with her or any other woman.

fuckedandbombed · 06/11/2020 18:14

Im definitely not in competition with her 😂. I'd lose !

What I'm saying is she looks unaturall her face does not move . Only her lips and eyes do .

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 06/11/2020 18:22

Then we need to agree to disagree, her face does move, and I don’t think she looks bad in any way, I think she looks great but with some work done. Which is very common now.

Delatron · 06/11/2020 19:15

I don’t think ‘she’s wrecked her face’. I’m mainly impressed by her jawline.
She looks like she has had some work done but doesn’t look bad.

I think she’d look slightly better if she allowed a few more age appropriate lines on forehead and round eyes but I do think she looks good.

Dozer · 07/11/2020 08:19

The cosmetic work on her face distracts from her performances IMO. Same with lots of others.

wowfudge · 07/11/2020 10:15

I disagree. She was on Graham Norton last night, as was Kylie. Nicole Kidman looked like Nicole Kidman and had a full range of expressions, but whatever Kylie has done made her look odd. Whether it's Botox, fillers, surgery or all three, the way some people's faces have cheeks which go all the way up to their eyes (can't think how else to describe it, but the fullness under the eyes is unnatural) is just weird. There is so much pressure still, especially for women, to look young, etc., etc.

Aone · 07/11/2020 10:26

@Bluntness100

To prove the hair and make up v reality thing,,
Same goes for Nicole Kidman (although Helen Mirren has got 20 years on her). NK posts photos of herself on Instagram at home with KU without makeup and with her hair all frizzy. It takes a lot of work from stylists to get her and other A-listers (Cate Blanchett springs to mind) ready for the red carpet. But like HM they have that star power that makes it work.

And I wasn't being dismissive of NK when I described her as a character actress. She is a leading lady because of her versatility - she inhabits her characters and makes them believable.
