What does this insult mean?

I’ve been informed that a male colleague (who has been sacked but apparently for something unrelated) has been using various nicknames for women at work in his email correspondences and my boss told me the one for me was “tinsel tits”.

Now I’m sure (well I know) that some will have had worse names but I’m not quite sure what mine actually means about me and it’s playing on my mind.

What would you assume by this nickname?

I’ve googled and it doesn’t really come up?

I didn’t have that much to do with this guy which is why I am confused as to why he would have an opinion of me. To me the name suggests someone who wears a lot of make up or jewellery maybe, I don’t wear either, at work when we were there I wore leggings and uggs. I was also pregnant for most of the time we worked together.

I know it shouldn’t bother me at all but it’s kind of upset me, it makes you think of how others perceive you when all you are doing is going about your daily business.

Your boss should have a word with the team about showing respect for colleagues. What does it mean? nothing in particular, just reducing you to some body parts.

FunTimes2020 · 05/11/2020 17:56

Sorry I have no idea what it means. I don't think it was entirely appropriate of your boss to tell you, I mean what was the benefit? Luckily the name calling dick has gone anyway.
Flowers for you

IliveonCoffee · 05/11/2020 18:03

Don't dwell on it. Not entirely sure what your boss was thinking to share with you all the crass nicknames....

Sound like he might even be complicit.. it's not clear if this ex-colleague felt confident enough to refer to you all as such to your boss, or if your boss has 'uncovered' this after his departure.

For what it's worth...I'd think it's likely referring to a Christmas outfit....maybe a glittery jumper he found particularly memorable Envy Envy, or if even a tinsley scrunchie.

AtrociousCircumstance · 05/11/2020 18:05

Your boss should not have told you.

I don’t think it means anything and besides, who gives a shit what that pricks thinks or thought in his puerile little mind? Irrelevant. Don’t let it get to you.

Aquamarine1029 · 05/11/2020 18:07

What the fuck is wrong with your boss? Is he daft? He never should have told you that and I would be reporting him to HR.

Velvian · 05/11/2020 18:14

Do you like Christmas? Grin
Sorry, OP I have no idea what that means. It says more about him than you though. What a douche.

JuliaJohnston · 05/11/2020 18:16

This.
Bettina500 · 05/11/2020 18:17

No idea what it could mean. Doesn't exactly sound the most intelligent of names, I wouldn't waste anymore time worrying about it

Bluntness100 · 05/11/2020 18:18

I think it’s kinda dumbing you down op. Like you’re a bit lacking in gravitas

Nackajory · 05/11/2020 18:18

You shouldn't know this , your boss shouldn't have told you. As for what it means - only that the guy who said it isnt very clever, lacks common decency and is fond of alliteration.

thebuntingofblymanor · 05/11/2020 18:20

Apparently lots of his emails were found out as part of the reason he was sacked and my boss felt he should tell all us women what had been said about us... I must say i wasn’t sure if he was right about doing that. He’s a bit old school but I think his heart is in the right place.

OP posts:
pictish · 05/11/2020 18:20

Tinsel tits, I’ve heard this...I think it refers to women who are either glamorous or imagine themselves to be glamorous.

In other words, he understands that you would reject him sexually if he made advances, so he denigrates you with a sneery nickname, along with all the other women who wouldn’t shag him either.

Wouldn’t give it any undue attention. He’s a knob and so is your boss for telling you about it.

PawPrincess · 05/11/2020 18:21

Are you very Christmassy and all about Christmas?!

PawPrincess · 05/11/2020 18:22

My nickname for him would have been greasy prick...or worse!

thebuntingofblymanor · 05/11/2020 18:22

I mean my boss.

The rude colleague I don’t know much about. He wasn’t the friendliest but I didn’t have much to do with him.

It just makes you wonder what other people actually think of you.

OP posts:
PlanDeRaccordement · 05/11/2020 18:23

It can’t be nice whatever it means. It certainly doesn’t mean a bird like a blue tit carrying a piece of tinsel. Glad he was found out and dismissed.

MashedSweetSpud · 05/11/2020 18:23

If he was still around this would have a perfect secret Santa gift for him.

What does this insult mean?
anxiiousone · 05/11/2020 18:24

Another one who cannot believe your boss would tell you that!Shock

MashedSweetSpud · 05/11/2020 18:24

Would have been *

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/11/2020 18:24

Your boss sounds very socially unaware, or a shit-stirrer Hmm

thebuntingofblymanor · 05/11/2020 18:25

@pictish that’s what I thought although genuinely that’s not me and especially not at work. Most of the time it’s all I can do to get there by 9.05am never mind bother putting on make up or anything like that. Even not at work I’m not like that. I would only dress up for a night out.

OP posts:
minou123 · 05/11/2020 18:26

It doesn't mean anything.

Men like this think they are funny when they come up with nicknames, but really they are misogynistic, little, pathetic arseholes.

I'm quite cross for you.

  1. This ex colleague should have been sacked for these nicknames. The boss knew about it.
  2. Your boss needs to be reported for sharing these names. Who else has he told about these names?
pictish · 05/11/2020 18:29

I believe you. Who knows why he chose this particular moniker for you?

CarinaMarina · 05/11/2020 18:30

It doesn't mean anything, like sugar tits or soppy bollocks. It's stupid and childish and should never have been used at work, let alone revealed to you, but don't fret over it - it means absolutely nothing at all.

ktp100 · 05/11/2020 18:30

WHY did your boss tell you??!!

I'd ignore it, OP. If you're not in on the joke it's not funny and if the joke is a pathetic attempt to sexualise and demean female staff it's downright disgraceful.

I used to work with a bloke in an office of 3. He gave porn names to us 2 girls - Beverley Hills for my rather well blessed colleague and Snatch Canyon for me. Cheeky bastard.

He was a lovely bloke, a bit too flirty for a married man but harmless. I do wonder if this shit caught up with him in the end, though. I didn't see the harm back then but I certainly wouldn't put up with it now.
