Help me to decide whether to go to A&E in the morning

Briefly...have now had period for 20 days straight. Seems to be getting heavier as the days go by...bright red, no clots, not like normal period blood, used 9 pads in a 10 hour shift on Monday.

Am 43. Quick history of recent menstrual issues as follows:

  • Age 36 - periods become thin, pale pink, last three or four days.
  • Age 38-42 - periods disappear entirely.
  • Sept 2019 - periods return, light and pale pink again, last three or four days.
  • Last four months - considerable discomfort and bloating around ovulation in left ovary with masses of egg white mucus being produced over a two week period. Over the last six weeks ovulation appears to fail, no egg white mucus produced, appears to try again, huge bloating, constant need to urinate, once again fails to produce ewm, period comes.

20 days later, it's still going. Over the last five days, tenderness again in left ovary area...uncomfortable to press on lower abdomen. Strong need to urinate every half hour. Dehydrated. Fast heart rate. Nausea. Dizzy on standing. Sleeping 12 hours a day when not working.

Triaged by emergency clinic over the phone as no gp appointments left. Recommends A&E. Would have to get bus, 12 mile journey, really can't be arsed. Fell asleep sitting up at the dining table whilst considering this - that was 11am, woke up at 2pm. Went back to bed for a few hours (day off today and tomorrow.)

What are the chances of this period stopping soon? We are a tier 3 area and whilst I'm not bothered about the virus itself per se, I really don't want to rock up at A&E whimpering that "me periods mekking me reyt gippy sicky like" in the middle of a sodding pandemic.

Can any lurking medics or people with similar experiences advise?

My thanks in advance.

PS: family history of early menopause (40's)

That's a sensible plan. I'm glad they are keeping you in.
One other highlight of my student nurse days was our theatre shifts. My friend called me into the gynae theatre from ENT to see an ovarian cyst be drained. Gynae was my main interest back then. The poor lady looked like she was full term with triplets and guess how much fluid they drained from the cyst? Nine litres. NINE! I remember the tube going in and thinking it was going to burst and shower us all. It was nothing so dramatic except for the amount of fluid. It was an experience and I've always wondered how the hell it got to that size before it was treated.
Googling things can often be a bad idea but in your case you know it's not very big do any cysts you google might make you feel better. I think it's best you just read a book or do online Christmas shopping though to distract you!
How's the pain? Are they managing it properly? I'm very passionate about effective pain relief and hate people to suffer.
I hope you manage to have a restful night and that the bleeding stays manageable.

So glad you got seen and not dismissed being in hospital is horrible but at least your being treated hope your better soon op Flowers

Cailleach · 05/11/2020 20:08

They thought I should be in more pain than I actually am although it is a bit uncomfortable I will admit. They keep pushing painkillers but I really don't need them at the moment so am refusing for now.

Biscuits and hot chocolate just turned up so that's me sorted anyway!

Oh I am so glad you are being treated.

I hope anyone and everyone else who thinks they may need medical attention will seek it, and let the HCPs decide whether it's "nothing" or not.

callistography · 05/11/2020 22:09

I'm am SO glad that you went in and they're looking after you. Been thinking about you all day, OP x

gallbladderpain · 06/11/2020 00:36

I am glad you went in OP !
I commented a few pages ago about previous issues I had. If it's anything gynae related it seems ive had it...have had 6 surgeries in just over 4 years.
I hope I can help put your mind at ease a little.
Last year I started having right hand sided pain not really severe like previous torsion but certainly painful and sometimes worse than other times and bleeding and nausea and weight loss. Had a scan which revealed cysts on both ovaries but not in keeping with a normal fluid filled cyst and they advised a ca125 test.....of course I was imagining and googling all sorts of horrific scenarios ...the ca125 was raised and I was seen by a gynae oncologist who also did not like the look of the cysts on ultrasound I was booked in for theatre a couple of days later for laparoscopic surgery to have a look and to remove the cysts and take biopsy. After the surgery he was able to confirm that from what he had seen he wasn't too concerned but they would send off for biopsy anyways and in the meantime not to worry a thing about it....everything came back completely fine from the biopsy and I was also pain and symptom free after the removal and the recovery from surgery was quick as well !
I think just little over a year later I've got cysts again have had some symptoms in recent weeks but I would imagine that's just going to be something recurring for me
I just wanted to let you know as I spent many hours trawling Mumsnet for ca125 and cyst stories and sometimes it's good to read something positive. I really hope you get a positive outcome as well Flowers

Dear God I thought you people were joking about the hair & teeth. Tell me it isn’t true, I’m definitely not googling it.

WhoWants2Know · 06/11/2020 12:59

It's actually true. Rogue cells just start producing hair, teeth and fingernails, usually in the ovary.

RhapsodyandAshe · 06/11/2020 13:03

It's true @Lordamighty

Arthersleep · 06/11/2020 13:08

Really relieved for you that it's just a cyst, albeit one with eyes, hair and teeth that might nibble on your insides! I think that they need names! Demoit?

Yes, basically, because it's made from an egg that's gone nuts, every cell has the capacity to become any kind of cell!

Mine had hair, teeth, other discernible tissues- but the surgeon was pleased there was no eyeball.

MadameMiggeldy · 06/11/2020 18:45

Dermot

Cailleach · 06/11/2020 20:06

Diarmuid the Dermoid Grin

Quick update - they decided not to do the MRI as I am still bleeding and in increasing discomfort so the surgeon is just going to whip out the ovary and cyst sometime tomorrow. I hope!

Saw your thread the other night. I’m so glad you went to A&E and were taken seriously. Yes these cysts really can be something to see! I hope the surgery goes well.
