Help me to decide whether to go to A&E in the morning

Briefly...have now had period for 20 days straight. Seems to be getting heavier as the days go by...bright red, no clots, not like normal period blood, used 9 pads in a 10 hour shift on Monday.

Am 43. Quick history of recent menstrual issues as follows:

  • Age 36 - periods become thin, pale pink, last three or four days.
  • Age 38-42 - periods disappear entirely.
  • Sept 2019 - periods return, light and pale pink again, last three or four days.
  • Last four months - considerable discomfort and bloating around ovulation in left ovary with masses of egg white mucus being produced over a two week period. Over the last six weeks ovulation appears to fail, no egg white mucus produced, appears to try again, huge bloating, constant need to urinate, once again fails to produce ewm, period comes.

20 days later, it's still going. Over the last five days, tenderness again in left ovary area...uncomfortable to press on lower abdomen. Strong need to urinate every half hour. Dehydrated. Fast heart rate. Nausea. Dizzy on standing. Sleeping 12 hours a day when not working.

Triaged by emergency clinic over the phone as no gp appointments left. Recommends A&E. Would have to get bus, 12 mile journey, really can't be arsed. Fell asleep sitting up at the dining table whilst considering this - that was 11am, woke up at 2pm. Went back to bed for a few hours (day off today and tomorrow.)

What are the chances of this period stopping soon? We are a tier 3 area and whilst I'm not bothered about the virus itself per se, I really don't want to rock up at A&E whimpering that "me periods mekking me reyt gippy sicky like" in the middle of a sodding pandemic.

Can any lurking medics or people with similar experiences advise?

My thanks in advance.

PS: family history of early menopause (40's)

In A&E now. Been triaged and bloods taken. Cannula in. Nurse comments that I look "extremely pale."

Not being dismissive so far anyway.

Stabbing pains worse than yesterday. Like ovulation pain but more severe.

Will see what doc says anyway.

Thinking of you Cailleach ( just a few on this thread will know what your username means ).
So glad you went to A&E where I hope you get the care you need.
Thanks

slipperywhensparticus · 05/11/2020 10:05

Fingers crossed they fix you up

AndThatsNotRight · 05/11/2020 10:13

Oh thank God! I've never forgotten that thread...

Your situation should've required being seen by gynae as urgent a long time ago, it's definitely gone beyond that to emergency. I'm so relieved that you're there.

Hopefully it won't be one of the scariest outcomes, but it could have been and they need ruling out.

Callipygion · 05/11/2020 10:13

"You're too young for menopause."

I had nearly that exact phrase said to me by my GP shortly after my 40th birthday (“much too young” he said). Periods had become erratic, none one month, then really heavy/flooding (and lasting a lot longer than a week) the next. It was menopause though as they stopped completely by age 44. It was probably peri-menopause (I’d never ever heard of that phrase till recently!) and apparently one ovary can shut down before the other so that probably explains why I didn’t get a period on alternate months. Can’t remember any unusual abdominal pain other than normal (bad for me) period pains. Good luck op. Hope you get sorted. X

Just seen doc...bloods showing slight anemia but no infection. After examining me said my left ovary feels "very lumpy" so now hanging on for a scan.

Feel dreadful today.

Hope all is ok OP

EL8888 · 05/11/2020 10:23

I wouldn’t bother personally. I had a 6 week period last year, went to my GP and they were useless. Their random explanation was kidney infection, l gave a sample, it got lost and l gave up

Thisgirlcanrun · 05/11/2020 10:31

Hope your feeling better soon and it isn’t anything too serious 🤞🏻 Been thinking of you this morning xx

Aragog · 05/11/2020 10:33

A nasty period is neither an accident nor an emergency.

Are you a medic?

The OP has spoken to a doctor's clinic who have recommended A&E.
The OP doesn't appear to just have a 'nasty period' as there are other symptoms which could be querying, and could indeed be an emergency situation.

I find it so scary on MN that people are so against anyone using A&E that they risk putting people at danger.

OP - please take the advice the medical staff you spoke to gave you. Yes, it might be nothing serious in the end, but some of your symptoms are of concern and need investigating.

At the very least you need to be seen by a walk in centre or doctor - in person, face to face.

Aragog · 05/11/2020 10:34

Sorry - I hadn't realised there was a second page - I am glad you have gone in. Hope all turns out to be okay.

MrsVeryTired · 05/11/2020 10:36

Hope you're ok, good you are being seen.

goldenharvest · 05/11/2020 10:44

Yes, go to a&E. It's not just a menstrual issue, you are experiencing symptoms of blood loss.

goldenharvest · 05/11/2020 10:45

I'm also an ex a&E nurse and I rarely say go to a&E

Marshyellow · 05/11/2020 10:47

Glad you've gone in OP.

Myglorioushairdo · 05/11/2020 11:09

I'm also glad you've gone in. Hoping they'll get to the bottom of what is causing this.

WitchWife · 05/11/2020 11:16

Sorry you’re feeling so unwell today. Fingers crossed it’s something fixable. I’ve learnt the hard way about not seeking medical help because “it’ll get better” and unless you’re a drama Queen usually, it rarely does! Have got literal scars to prove it. I think a lot of us brush things off because of not wanting to waste time of busy doctors etc but I’m so glad you’re getting help now. You deserve to be looked after and treated.

LunaNorth · 05/11/2020 11:30

Thank goodness for that. I've been thinking about you all day. Good luck.
