Help me to decide whether to go to A&E in the morning

Briefly...have now had period for 20 days straight. Seems to be getting heavier as the days go by...bright red, no clots, not like normal period blood, used 9 pads in a 10 hour shift on Monday.

Am 43. Quick history of recent menstrual issues as follows:

  • Age 36 - periods become thin, pale pink, last three or four days.
  • Age 38-42 - periods disappear entirely.
  • Sept 2019 - periods return, light and pale pink again, last three or four days.
  • Last four months - considerable discomfort and bloating around ovulation in left ovary with masses of egg white mucus being produced over a two week period. Over the last six weeks ovulation appears to fail, no egg white mucus produced, appears to try again, huge bloating, constant need to urinate, once again fails to produce ewm, period comes.

20 days later, it's still going. Over the last five days, tenderness again in left ovary area...uncomfortable to press on lower abdomen. Strong need to urinate every half hour. Dehydrated. Fast heart rate. Nausea. Dizzy on standing. Sleeping 12 hours a day when not working.

Triaged by emergency clinic over the phone as no gp appointments left. Recommends A&E. Would have to get bus, 12 mile journey, really can't be arsed. Fell asleep sitting up at the dining table whilst considering this - that was 11am, woke up at 2pm. Went back to bed for a few hours (day off today and tomorrow.)

What are the chances of this period stopping soon? We are a tier 3 area and whilst I'm not bothered about the virus itself per se, I really don't want to rock up at A&E whimpering that "me periods mekking me reyt gippy sicky like" in the middle of a sodding pandemic.

Can any lurking medics or people with similar experiences advise?

My thanks in advance.

PS: family history of early menopause (40's)

Hilarious internal exam followed - junior doctor who struggled to get the speculum in as I have a weirdly angled fanny and for bonus points a retroverted uterus. When she did finally remove it there was a huge gush of blood and clots that left a stain the size of a dinner plate on the bed.

She was so startled that she helped "yikes!!! which had the consultant in stitches.

The blood soaked the bed pad right through. At least they can see what I'm dealing with I suppose.

Next stop admittance and ultrasound.

I know it isn't funny but it made me smile, and it is probably th ebest thing that could have happened, as the evidence was right there.

Glad you gushed so to speak, you do have a sense of humour. The ultrasound is a good step forward. Just rest now, you are very poorly.

jess3817 · 05/11/2020 13:00

I'm so glad you went and are being looked after.

LadyEloise · 05/11/2020 13:19

ladymuck111 · 05/11/2020 13:32

Glad you went and your being taken seriously. I did lol though at the weirdly angled fanny!

Sunnysideup999 · 05/11/2020 13:43

I’m not a medic burn 20 days of bleeding does not sound like a period. Especially since you stopped your periods.
I would go and get it checked out.
A and E might (likely) fob you off - bust ask for a fast track referral.
Mention the pain and the tiredness.

SistemaAddict · 05/11/2020 13:48

Humour is essential with gynae issues I find. As a student nurse I was stunned when after giving birth my 17 year old patient shot a stream of blood out and it hit the opposite wall in the birthing suite. My midwife mentor and I just looked at each other in shock as she'd never seen anything like it and it was my first birth.
I'm so glad you went to a&e and have been admitted. I hope they quickly find the cause and can sort it for you. You must be exhausted. Take care of yourself and I hope you have nice ladies to chat with on the ward. My mum had the best laughs after her hysterectomy she says. Very painful laughs with stitches but whatever her and the other ladies were discussing was evidently hilarious. She remembers it fondly. The laughing that is and remains friends with that lady 30 years later.

ifiwasascent · 05/11/2020 13:49

Oh god bless you! I'm glad that happened during the exam so they could see and take it seriously though! Hope you're okay!

fulltimeworkingmotherof4 · 05/11/2020 13:51

Best wishes OP .

SummerHouse · 05/11/2020 15:12

"yikes!" OP you are fabulous to recount with humour, what others could well have found traumatising. Well done for going and for the brilliant summary of the internal exam. Hope all's well that ends well. Flowers

tofuschnitzel · 05/11/2020 15:14

I'm so glad you have been admitted and are having further tests, OP. I hope they get to the bottom of things.

Cailleach · 05/11/2020 16:09

Two large cysts - one on each ovary. Oddly the bigger one -8cm - is on the right ovary where there is no pain.

Need MRI but highly doubt that will be done today. Just want to go home now.

steppemum · 05/11/2020 16:18

ouch.

Have you got to stay in? Will they remove?

JoeBidenIsGreat · 05/11/2020 16:18

How long have you been in A&E now?

Cailleach · 05/11/2020 16:20

Honestly not sure, just got back from ultrasound. Strange how the smaller one is on the area where the pain is...but nothing from the other one. No idea if 8cm is large but surely your ovary is smaller than that anyway?!
