Help me to decide whether to go to A&E in the morning

Briefly...have now had period for 20 days straight. Seems to be getting heavier as the days go by...bright red, no clots, not like normal period blood, used 9 pads in a 10 hour shift on Monday.

Am 43. Quick history of recent menstrual issues as follows:

  • Age 36 - periods become thin, pale pink, last three or four days.
  • Age 38-42 - periods disappear entirely.
  • Sept 2019 - periods return, light and pale pink again, last three or four days.
  • Last four months - considerable discomfort and bloating around ovulation in left ovary with masses of egg white mucus being produced over a two week period. Over the last six weeks ovulation appears to fail, no egg white mucus produced, appears to try again, huge bloating, constant need to urinate, once again fails to produce ewm, period comes.

20 days later, it's still going. Over the last five days, tenderness again in left ovary area...uncomfortable to press on lower abdomen. Strong need to urinate every half hour. Dehydrated. Fast heart rate. Nausea. Dizzy on standing. Sleeping 12 hours a day when not working.

Triaged by emergency clinic over the phone as no gp appointments left. Recommends A&E. Would have to get bus, 12 mile journey, really can't be arsed. Fell asleep sitting up at the dining table whilst considering this - that was 11am, woke up at 2pm. Went back to bed for a few hours (day off today and tomorrow.)

What are the chances of this period stopping soon? We are a tier 3 area and whilst I'm not bothered about the virus itself per se, I really don't want to rock up at A&E whimpering that "me periods mekking me reyt gippy sicky like" in the middle of a sodding pandemic.

Can any lurking medics or people with similar experiences advise?

My thanks in advance.

PS: family history of early menopause (40's)

Reading some advice given on this thread I'm just so glad you didn't heed it and went to A&E, Cailleach.

Miip · 08/11/2020 09:41

Get well soon OP.

tenlittlecygnets · 08/11/2020 15:40

Thank you for the updates, op. So glad you went to A&E rather than taking the dubious 'advice' of non-medics on here!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

@Cailleach how are you feeling now?

Cailleach · 12/11/2020 08:36

@justasking111 not too bad, ta - very little pain now so ditched the painkillers two days ago.

The main issues are tiredness - not suprising! - and a fairly heavy bleed; the ward seemed unconcerned by this and said it was caused by falling hormone levels. After three weeks of heavy bleeding you wouldn't think that there was anything left in there but I suppose there may be some buildup in there from having months of light periods.

And the final issue is crushing boredom - I've got nothing to do in the flat because I did it all on furlough earlier in the year! So trying to internet shop for Christmas to keep myself occupied.

Ta for asking!

@Cailleach glad you are feeling a bit better. DO NOT go on the Christmas bargain threads. You will never escape them.

@TenCornMaidens Too late - alas!

Speedy recovery. I hope you have someone to help out.

throwaway10000 · 12/11/2020 19:50

With all the bleeding, I wonder what your ferritin levels are like!

Cailleach · 12/11/2020 21:37

Not sure... I know they said my results showed I am slightly anaemic but don't know specifics. I went for a short walk today and was breathless and dizzy and wobbly legged by the end - not in a major way but enough to make me feel odd.

I regularly do ten miles a day and have a very physical job so am pretty fit so it's surprising how much I've lost stamina in only a week.

@LadyEloise no I live alone but am not struggling to do anything so am fine.

OP, so that's your body sending you a big signal that it's not ready.
Take it gently for a while, and build up to your usual activity.
Your body has been through a lot, and while you might feel mentally able, physically you're not ready, as frustrating as that may be.
Lots of telly, sewing, crosswords, or whatever takes your fancy will help, plus learning to say 'I can't do that at the moment' will help. Thanks

Daisymaze · 12/11/2020 21:58

You haven't lost the stamina OP, your body is just still recovering and expending energy on healing. Rest up and when you're feeling ready you'll probably find your stamina isn't far from where you left it!
