Welcome into another thread of alternative reality as we try to nagivate through the Coronacoaster of life.

We may be up, down, spinning around (generally in confusion at the next random edict drawn up on the back of a fag packet) but never sucking the joy out of life.

Christmas lights are up in my town centre. Not lit, just in place. I'm pretty certain they weren't there when I was last in town on Friday.
Good to know that they have put them up despite lockdown.
The 'official switch on' - with the mayor, local radio etc, is normally a big event in late November, so I wonder if they will just quietly switch them on this year.

NothingIsWrong · 11/11/2020 19:39

Hands up here for the exhausted crew. I have no motivation, or oomph or anything. I'm just sort of existing.

Me too.
Orangeblossom7777 · 11/11/2020 19:51

Yes totally zonked here as well. Stormy outside tonight.

DominaShantotto · 11/11/2020 20:36

I've got absolutely no motivation, getting out of bed on a morning is a battle - DD2 is the same to be honest (but the kid is 90% sloth).

Should have got so much done this week but I haven't.

MercyBooth · 11/11/2020 20:39

Its only ONE other house i am planning to go to at Christmas and that is DMs. It will be just me and them so 3

DH hates Christmas so stays at home.

Boxing Day DB goes round and i sometimes pop in again in the afternoon. So i suppose it works out at 3 households and six people.

MercyBooth · 11/11/2020 20:41

DM is 84 and unwell. Non Covid related. She is also unable to cook a full Christmas dinner like she used to. She needs help . There is no way im giving up Christmas with her.

Obvs if one of us catches Covid this is all voided but otherwise...........

MercyBooth · 11/11/2020 20:43

Sorry i know im preaching to the converted Channel 4 news just sounded like they were softening us up for lockdown extension.

MissEWeatherwax · 11/11/2020 20:57

No, they can’t extend lockdown, I’m going to cry. I was worried they would put half the country straight in tier 3.
I think I am turning in a sloth. But not as cute. There is already drip in the sofa where I sitBlush

BogRollBOGOF · 11/11/2020 22:11

Good grief, we were on page 2 Shock

I hope that having to go through this, that it brings local figures down so that we stay in tier 2 and don't get bumped up to 3. Still going up around here, but the rate has eased. I hope it stabilises and drops in the next couple of weeks. I know there is a lag so we're seeing patterns for a couple of weeks ago in testing for symptoms developing, plus localised data being released.

It would be crap to spend 5 days as tier 2 (which we didn't really notice before lockdown was announced within 36 hours) then 4 weeks of lockdown and still be in the doghouse. It would certainly prove that lockdown doesn't work.

THIS! In Essex we were in Tier 1 Then Finch lobbied for us to be put in tier 2 We had only been in tier 2 for two weeks when this lockdown was announced. We should go back into tier 1 afterwards.

DrDiva · 11/11/2020 22:22

Yep, I’m BKC as well (bloody knackered crew). My poor DS wanted to play a ball game after school and I just couldn’t.

We made potstickers instead. 🐷

NannyGythaOgg · 11/11/2020 23:21

We weren't in extra measures but when the tiers came in we went straight into tier 2 and in less than a week we were in tier 3.

This lockdown is hardly more than tier 3, apart from hairdressers, for me, but much worse for some independent businesses.

I'm past caring. I will continue to see my kids - occasionally, as that is all I see them anyway. Friends and family I am close to aren't exactly dementors but rule believers and followers (comfortably retired).

NannyGythaOgg · 11/11/2020 23:22

Oh and 100% agree lockdown doesn't work

MercyBooth · 12/11/2020 00:59

VERY interesting discussion on Newsnight. A young bloke called Jamie Brown was on there. His dad sadly died of Covid back in March.
Jamie talked about the fact that "Protect the NHS" made people feel that they should try and recover at home as back then it was being mooted as not a serious illness for anyone without underlying conditions. How many people have died "protecting the NHS" Im NOT disparaging the people who work in it , Im pointing out how taken to heart the Government slogan was.

starfish88 · 12/11/2020 05:03

The rest of mumsnet is crazy. I've shared that article about more babies dying of DV than under 18s of covid and been told "I'd rather be killed quickly than die from coronavirus."

So there you have it. DV is acceptable as long as you kill someone quicker than covid.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 12/11/2020 06:22

I can believe it @starfish88
On one thread over there, someone shared a news article about children and babies being abused, neglected and killed during lockdown.
Someone responded that that they would suffer most with a crumbling or failing NHS so.....
I'm sure that people who loved/love those children feel better knowing they gave their lives for such a worthy cause.

It seems to have escaped peoples notice that the NHS is already crumbling and failing and that is why we are in this mess.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/11/2020 07:28

It was tough enough having an infant through the winter anyway. I was my most exhausted at this time of year when DS turned 1. Pregnancy trashed me. Birth trashed me. He was OK as a younger baby, but weaning exposed multiple food allergies that took 6 months to formally identify which disturbed his sleep requiring umpteen night feeds (I missed him being 3m!) And he could use up most of the afternoon daylight on a nap. Plus, starting the habits of a lifetime, getting him dressed and out punctually was hard too.

I certainly needed the external company and motivation of baby groups and activities to drive us out, and it must be so so tough for mums of infants that really need that company and routine and can't have it.

Nurseries and schools open even with disruption is certainly better than before but doesn't assist younger families through challenging times at a tough time of year.

So relieved to hear that others are just feeling wiped out - thought it was me! But you’re right, the constant, low level stress to wearing Sad
Feeling very flat atm. Going to try going out for a run if I can muster the enthusiasm.

DrDiva · 12/11/2020 07:41

Oh @BogRollBOGOF I feel you about the allergies and night feeds. We had that too - DS was 9 weeks prem and had food allergies and it was years before he didn’t feed at night. And with him having the energy of seven Duracell bunnies/the attention of a particularly unfocused gnat, winter was a bit desperate at the best of times. It must be awful for many right now. My DH rants about the mums meeting up in the local park so their kids can play together and I’m saying “no, that’s probably the only support they get. And frankly that’s important too.”

DominaShantotto · 12/11/2020 09:09

@MercyBooth

Sorry i know im preaching to the converted Channel 4 news just sounded like they were softening us up for lockdown extension.
They had better bloody not - I have hairdressers booked for a few days after this lockdown is lifted!
Aztectrousers · 12/11/2020 09:12

Boris will get lynched if he extends lockdown after promising it will end on 2nd December. However, nobody believes a thing the government say any more so I wouldn’t be surprised.

Worldgonecrazy · 12/11/2020 09:14

I suppose that's why blind confomity at the moment bothers me. You've been told to mask up in the playground so just do it even if it is totally pointless exhibitionism.

This with bells on! The number of people following roolz because they cannot conceive that there is an alternative. Mask wearing at school drop off or pick up exemplifies this.

At least we are not America where mask wearing has become a political statement, hence news reporters wearing them when miles away from any other person.

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 12/11/2020 09:15

This interview has given me hope. This is a massively credible source that's now Downing St funded and feeding into govt data. With this sort of input, surely lockdowns in future have to be very carefully justified and there has to be more balance given to other issues.

It's realistic and measured and covers so much from the data, to the way the public message has been delivered, to the vaccine ( which is only a tiny proportion of the interview)

IwishIwasyoda · 12/11/2020 09:17

I am one of those mums at the park. It is pretty much the only place we can go for DS to meet friends at weekend/after school.

Don't want to turn this into a misery-fest but I do get annoyed when politicians say things like 'Halloween will be different this year, celebrate with your families'. What about children like my DS who is an 'only' and has spent the best part of the year with only his mum and dad for company? We don't have any other family living less than 4 hours away so it's really important DS does get to play with kids his own age sometimes. Would it have been so hard to say 'children from 2 households can celebrate together this year'?

Anyway, for this reason I will spend extraordinary amounts of time in the wind-blasted playground occasionally speaking to adults and watching DS face light up because he gets to play with a friend he cannot play with at school (different bubble)
