Help, I need Amazon Prime / Netflix suggestions, I need to chill...

I feel like I'm extraordinarily fussy, but I'm a single mum with very little time and if I'm going to relax with some television I'd really like it to be something I enjoy a lot. I also have literally no idea of the cultural zeitgeist at the moment. Help!

I have really loved:

Sex Education
Modern Love
Unorthodox

I quite enjoyed:

Indian Matchmaking (but I hate most other similar programmes)
Emily in Paris

Can anyone suggest what I should watch next? I know the stuff above is quite 'light' but I also want it to be smart and funny. I also enjoy heavier stuff like Unorthodox but don't know what to try next really. I want it to be uplifting somehow even if heavy...

Capernaum on Prime is a deeply moving film - if you liked Unorthodox, you will probably enjoy it.

Also we absolutely loved The Queen’s Gambit which is a 7 part series about a young girl who excels at chess. It was gorgeously made and very well acted. Satisfying too!

rubyslippers · 30/10/2020 15:08

Shtisel - Netflix

Bedroomdilemma · 30/10/2020 15:09

Cobra Kai is good fun

This is Us on Amazon Prime. There are 4 seasons, each of 18 episodes, and I absolutely love it.

FredaFrogspawn · 30/10/2020 15:10

Oo good call rubyslippers.

That has the same actress as in Orthodox and was great watch.

RozTheSchnoz · 30/10/2020 15:10

Have you watched Schitts Creek? It's brilliant!

Blibbler · 30/10/2020 15:11

The Good Place if you haven't already seen it. It is light, funny and throws in a beginner's guide to philosophy

nancy75 · 30/10/2020 15:13

Russian doll on Netflix

MiraWard77 · 30/10/2020 15:13

Cobra Kai was surprisingly good. The last episode one-take corridor shot is incredible.

I'm loving Community at the moment - only 20min episodes, short and clever.

Schitt's Creek is the best ever.

Gilmore Girls is like hygge in TV format.

raspberrymuffin · 30/10/2020 15:14

Schitt's Creek is funny and uplifting AND is in 20 minute episodes so you don't need to find a big chunk of time to watch it.

Chestnut23 · 30/10/2020 15:14

The Queen's Gambit is good!

WeeMadArthur · 30/10/2020 15:18

Ozark is quite dark, but really gripping, and there are three series to watch. I also liked Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist, which is completely different

PlanDeRaccordement · 30/10/2020 15:19

Harlots is really good. It’s got light-hearted bits but also heavier, gritty bits.

Gentleman Jack is also very good.

countdowntonap · 30/10/2020 15:22

Little Fires Everywhere

orangenasturtium · 30/10/2020 15:24

The Spy with Sacha Baron Cohen. It's a drama based on the true story of an Israeli spy who infiltrated the Syrian government.

Material or Ali's Wedding on Netflix.

DaffodilSunshine · 30/10/2020 15:26

I'm currently enjoying The Bold Type on prime. It's light and easy

MotherOfDragonite · 30/10/2020 15:27

Thank you so much, at first glance these look like brilliant suggestions!

Schitt's Creek and the Queen's Gambit look awesome. Shtisel too! I haven't watched any of these (or any other tv from the last 7 years really). I'm going to check out literally all of the other suggestions too.

Yes, loved The Bold Type...just gutted I can't find a way to watch season 4. Seems it's overseas only 😕

DGRossetti · 30/10/2020 15:34

I see Simon Pegg/Nick Frost have a new series on Prime "Truth Seekers" ...

MotherOfDragonite · 30/10/2020 15:43

@FredaFrogspawn

Oo good call rubyslippers.

That has the same actress as in Orthodox and was great watch.

Her acting was just incredible! She held the whole thing together and was just so compelling to watch.

If you like romance Outlander o prime

Yumyumicedbuns · 30/10/2020 15:53

Offspring on Netflix is brilliant, best thing I’ve watched in a long, long time!

mamaduckbone · 30/10/2020 16:04

I think 'the end of the f**ing world' is on Netflix - funny and dark. If you like Sex Education it should appeal.

DGRossetti · 30/10/2020 16:09

I think 'the end of the f**ing world' is on Netflix

I think it's outside the window, now ....

Skysblue · 30/10/2020 16:10

Netflix... Lucifer. The Good Place! Cobra Kai.
