Help, I need Amazon Prime / Netflix suggestions, I need to chill...

I feel like I'm extraordinarily fussy, but I'm a single mum with very little time and if I'm going to relax with some television I'd really like it to be something I enjoy a lot. I also have literally no idea of the cultural zeitgeist at the moment. Help!

I have really loved:

Sex Education
Modern Love
Unorthodox

I quite enjoyed:

Indian Matchmaking (but I hate most other similar programmes)
Emily in Paris

Can anyone suggest what I should watch next? I know the stuff above is quite 'light' but I also want it to be smart and funny. I also enjoy heavier stuff like Unorthodox but don't know what to try next really. I want it to be uplifting somehow even if heavy...

Motherland
Dead to Me
Santa Clarita Diet

MissClementine · 01/11/2020 00:02

This is Us, on Amazon, I loved this so much.

Fittata · 01/11/2020 00:07

Just a warning, I found Schitts Creek quite dull and slow at first before I fell in love with it Smile

@Mumblechum0

This is Us on Amazon Prime. There are 4 seasons, each of 18 episodes, and I absolutely love it.
SEASON 5 IS OUT NOW

THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!! Shock end to second episode...

Mumblechum0 · 01/11/2020 17:22

@catsoutofthebag NO!!!! I need to clear my diary NOW!!!

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 01/11/2020 20:42

I loved Pose, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, Away, all on Netflix

MotherOfDragonite · 01/11/2020 21:43

Important news update: I am watching This Is Us. It's just what I needed! (GUESS HOW OLD I AM)

Next up is The Queen's Gambit. And/or Shtisel.

And given the number of mentions, I will definitely try to watch more than the first 5 minutes of Schitt's Creek.

You guys are wonderful, you've really cheered up my evenings. And I will need it with the lockdown coming!

Oh I hope you love This is Us as much as I did. The soundtrack is really good too.

MotherOfDragonite · 01/11/2020 23:29

I really do, and yes it is! I knew I was going to like it when the Sufjan Steven started playing at the beginning.

Actually I really appreciated the music in Modern Love too! It was good music and the lyrics always related neatly to the plotlines.

Same!

Op, The Crown is amazing. It's an absolute must watch.

RubyFakeLips · 02/11/2020 00:10

Amazon:
Mrs Maisel - Hilarious
The Looming Tower - FBI/CIA drama in lead up to 9/11. Fantastic acting.
Animal Kingdom - Flashy crime and family drama
Handmaid's Tale - Has been quite zeitgeist
Transparent- Trans family comedy drama
Life in Pieces - actually funny version of Modern Family

Netflix:
Dead to Me - Twisty, funny, female led
Orange is The New Black - Lots of it, really funny and moving
Teenage Bounty Hunters - Much, much better than it sounds! Light/comedy.
Ozarks - Fantastic and gripping
Pose - Insightful, great characters.
The Sinner - Dark Drama
Ratched - Dark sort of horror drama
Fargo - Darkly funny violent drama

We're really enjoying the Queen's Gambit.

jay55 · 02/11/2020 00:18

Loved The Queens gambit not what I expected at all.

Currently watching Wanted, pair of Aussie women on the run, it's bloody brilliant with amazing scenery.

MotherOfDragonite · 10/11/2020 10:57

I just can't get into The Crown at all! I don't think I'm super enthused about the idea of something about the monarchy.

I'm still in the depths of This Is Us addiction, I am enjoying it enormously. I may start watching Shtisel too!

I know people say that TV is brain numbing, blah blah blah (and I've been there - 15 years ago I remember having the TV on all the time and mindlessly watching cooking programmes) --- but I do feel that watching some really good thoughtful stuff is genuinely enriching my life. I'm actually excited about watching an episode in the evening after the kids are asleep, and it's so nice to do something relaxing and just for me during this stressful time.

This.
MrsMiaWallis · 10/11/2020 11:00

Sorry just seen you are loving it already!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 10/11/2020 11:02

Echoing the suggestion of The good place, I love how its light comedy, but still foid for thought philosophy wise.

Russian doll and Parks and rec also very good!

MotherOfDragonite · 15/11/2020 13:06

I just can't watch the episode in This Is Us in series 2! Giving it a break for a bit. Really enjoyed the rest and binge-watched it though.

So now I'm watching The Queen's Gambit in the meantime. It's absolutely brilliant. Not at all what I expected. Quite dark but gentle at the same time in a funny way. And very sharp and watchable.

Hello lovely TV recommending people. Any other recommendations more than welcome!

To update you on my viewing... I never hit it off with Schitt's Creek! It was fun but ultimately just too contrived for me to get into. Despite really persevering with this through the whole first series, it has still not made the like list and I've given up.

This Is Us was absolutely brilliant at first but slightly lost my interest in the current series when they all appeared with surgical masks on and reenacted the Covid pandemic which is what I am trying to avoid with TV :-)

I ADORED The Queen's Gambit. It was dark but gentle, if that makes sense, and really very special.

I am now enjoying Orange Is The New Black. I didn't expect to, but it's great. Very thoughtfully made -- I like how you get glimpses of the inmates' pasts while navigating the excitement of the show's plotlines in the present.

I have really loved:

Sex Education
Modern Love
Unorthodox
Orange is the New Black
The Queen's Gambit

I quite enjoyed:

I’m currently rewatching Brooklyn 99 on Netflix and it’s still just as funny!
I sadly have to agree about the latest This is Us ... I want to escape masks and pandemic! (Although I’ll still watch it so we’re also scraping the barrel for things to be watch!)
We really enjoyed the movie Bad Neighbours on Netflix last week, probably more than we should have!
