Help, I need Amazon Prime / Netflix suggestions, I need to chill...

I feel like I'm extraordinarily fussy, but I'm a single mum with very little time and if I'm going to relax with some television I'd really like it to be something I enjoy a lot. I also have literally no idea of the cultural zeitgeist at the moment. Help!

I have really loved:

Sex Education
Modern Love
Unorthodox

I quite enjoyed:

Indian Matchmaking (but I hate most other similar programmes)
Emily in Paris

Can anyone suggest what I should watch next? I know the stuff above is quite 'light' but I also want it to be smart and funny. I also enjoy heavier stuff like Unorthodox but don't know what to try next really. I want it to be uplifting somehow even if heavy...

Dead to Me on Netflix. After the first episode you’ll be hooked (and it’s not as heavy as it sounds by any means)

ArmchairCritics · 30/10/2020 16:25

It’s got to be This Is Us!! You are in for SUCH a treat. I’m almost jealous of anyone who gets to watch the whole thing for the first time 😭.

Another vote for Offspring on Netflix, loved it and am watching it again now.

samuraimyths · 30/10/2020 17:54

This is Us on amazon prime. Long series. Last 2 episodes filmed during corona times- fascinating to watch!

samuraimyths · 30/10/2020 17:56

Also if you want a film, Enola Holmes.

hitchhikingghost · 30/10/2020 18:17

This is Us, Good Girls (Netflix) & Dead to me!

givememarmite · 30/10/2020 18:22

I second Dead To Me, I loved this! and third The Bold Type for some easy, fun watching.

WishingOnACarrot · 30/10/2020 18:26

The Americans - just brilliant

crimsonlake · 30/10/2020 18:30

If you like lavish period dramas Ekaterina the Great on prime is fabulous.
I loved the Vikings also on prime.
Last Kingdom on netflix is great.
The Tudors is also well worth a watch on prime I think.
The Marvellous Mrs Maisel is great.
I agree about Capernaum, brilliant.
Balloon on prime is edge of your seat...all the way through.

ScribblingPixie · 30/10/2020 18:31

Have you not watched the Amazing Mrs Maisel? Have you really not watched anything much for 7 years? The Crown?

ScribblingPixie · 30/10/2020 18:32

Great minds, Crimson Lake, except you got the title right!

MiraWard77 · 30/10/2020 18:32

@DGRossetti

I see Simon Pegg/Nick Frost have a new series on Prime "Truth Seekers" ...
Ooh, thanks for this one!
HappyThursdays · 30/10/2020 18:33

I've just started This Is Us and I'm hooked!

I finished Schitts Creek last week - if you start, don't give up after the first 2-3 episodes, keep going and it gets so much better!

mateysmum · 30/10/2020 18:40

Parks and Recreation

Outlander

Keep1984fiction · 30/10/2020 21:11

Norsemen a Norwegian comedy series on Netflix.
The everyday story of a group of vikings more concerned with Social climbing hair loss and relationships etc rather than raiding.
Much funnier than it sounds

LunaNorth · 30/10/2020 21:15

YY to The Queen’s Gambit.

It’s excellent and so gorgeous to look at.

LunaNorth · 30/10/2020 21:16

We’ve also just watched the first two episodes of Truth Seeker. We’re enjoying it. Very funny.

MotherOfDragonite · 31/10/2020 11:04

@DGRossetti

I think 'the end of the f**ing world' is on Netflix

I think it's outside the window, now ....

I seriously haven't.

I can't get excited for The Crown to be honest. But I will definitely try the Amazing Mrs Maisel!

I've mentioned this before re Amazon Prime: The Sandhaam Murders. It's a Swedish series, a cop investigating murders on an island in the Stockholm archipelago. It's not heavy murder stuff but the story lines are engaging, the scenery is lovely and the backstories and character relationships are interesting. Perfect escapism.

ScribblingPixie · 31/10/2020 12:15

I'm jealous of you, OP! So much great stuff to catch up on. Detectorists is lovely if you haven't seen that. One of the things I enjoyed most from several years ago was The Legacy, about an arty Danish family. And you won't have seen Succession which is brilliant. Shtisel has been mentioned already and I also liked 30 Degrees in February - Swedish but no murders! Borgen, the series about a Danish female politician, is great. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt too. So much stuff!

DGRossetti · 31/10/2020 17:08

Oh, another thumbs up for the Marvellous Mrs. Maisel.

QuestionableMouse · 31/10/2020 17:10

I've been watching Leverage which is entertaining but not too dark/gritty.

msophie95 · 31/10/2020 21:52

Good girls on Netflix
Cougar Town on prime - it’s my current go to, easy watching!
