Hi all

I couldn’t find the new thread so here is one I set up. It’s windy out there! Glad I weeded my flowerbeds a couple of days ago.

One thing I really also don't understand is, if everything is to be closed, how is the government going to recompense people? Or do you think they will try and get away with only paying a proportion? I think it's a strange coincidence that the weekend that furlough payments end is the weekend another lockdown is mooted.
Whatever, printing money endlessly and giving it away is not the answer and will surely destabilise the economy even more.

TabbyStar · 31/10/2020 08:26

I can't do this again. I just can't.
Cases are falling in the North West so the measures put in place ARE working. Why go into lockdown again. I can't. I just can't

And I've just had it, two weeks in the house, and massively unlikely I'm a risk to anyone.

Bollss · 31/10/2020 08:35

Ffssssss. Fuck Boris and everything he stands for. And the rest of them. Fuck them as well.

Had an argument with my mum because "youre making this political" er yes because it is. I love her but why is she so compliant!! She didn't get it the first time so why I thought she would get it now I don't know.

Dp on the other hand well, he has proved him self as a fully paid up AD and even mentioned the mental health repercussions of this to his well off, unbothered friends.

At least I know when I inevitably can never see the rest of my family again I am stuck with a good en Smile

But in all seriousness I don't really get where were going with this. We lock down until December, then what? We either lock down continuously for months like last time but then again.... What then??

It's a never ending circle there is no way out..... We are reliant on a vaccine that most of us won't even be offered probably for at least a year so what is the point!!!

I am actually despairing

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/10/2020 08:39

Although the news reporters are saying this is based on "evidence given to the government yesterday that they are now considering"
That's a bit different to "Boris is gonna lock us down on Monday"
Also with many people Christmas shopping soon just cramming everyone into shops for the last few weeks is a dick move surely? Would that not result in more infections rather than everyone spread out?

RosieLemonade · 31/10/2020 08:41

I’ve been physically sick this morning with fear. How can they do this to us.

RosieLemonade · 31/10/2020 08:42

Saying if you are naughty and don’t go into lockdown then Father Christmas won’t come. Like we are infants. I said this on another thread and was asked how I would feel if 4000 people a day died of covid. Why can’t the rest of MN think logically. Unless you are pro lockdown you are inherently selfish?

Reedwarbler · 31/10/2020 08:43

I think as a population we should stop being so bloody compliant.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 31/10/2020 08:43

They need to keep schools open - state schools, not just private ones like last time.

I'm at the point I can cope with restrictions if the kids are in school.

wanderings · 31/10/2020 08:48

@Reedwarbler I think as a population we should stop being so bloody compliant.

Can you say this A HUNDRED TIMES LOUDER?

This was precisely the problem from day one. Saint Boris (along with governments all over the world) seized the opportunity to test public compliance and credulity. Sadly, March gave the conclusion that the public were extremely docile, obedient, believed everything they were told, were ready to spy on their neighbours, which set a terrible precedent. We need to show that THIS IS NOT THE CASE THIS TIME. Bring on the civil unrest.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/10/2020 08:49

DH just suggested that maybe there is a chance this was leaked to the press to gauge public opinion, as most posts on SM I've seen are saying they won't comply and calling out the governments failings, then maybe it won't be a hard lockdown again.
People have lost faith. They don't want to give the government more time to sort out track and trace as they've had 8 bloody months already. They don't believe for a second that it will end on Dec 1st as we have been lied to there too.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/10/2020 08:50

The eye of the storm is a good analogy.
In one hour, I'll be heading up the motorway to unparkrun with my darling friend. One of of those soul friends that make time and distance evaporate when you catch up. Last year we created a habit of every few months, meeting at a parkrun equidistant from our homes and it was easy to do, little and often without having to conciously carve out at least half a day which we were struggling to do for a number of years.

I'm hoping a top-up of social credit will do us good.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/10/2020 09:05

Honestly I don't think I would feel anything at this point. I am completely devoid of emotion when it comes to covid deaths. I simply do not care any more. And yes I'd be sad if it was my family, but no more sad than if it was cancer, heat attack, car crash, suicide etc.
NastyBlouse · 31/10/2020 09:24

@BogRollBOGOF I love the idea of soul friends. I haven’t heard that expression before but it’s lovely.

TheOrchidKiller · 31/10/2020 09:37

If anyone says it's to "Save Christmas" they can do one.
Do people seriously think one month 6 weeks of lockdown will allow everything to go on as normal? Restrictions & caveats will still be in place. They will keep us dangling by a thread so that people don't make plans to meet up. And if I am wrong & they do let us all do exactly as we please over Christmas, how is that going to help keep cases down?

I'm sick of the dabbling approach. We've been in tier 3 plus for a day, but rather than give it time to work, let's footle around with it again. Rather than stick all the tier 1 areas with rising cases in a tier 2 or 3, to see if it works, & at least allow people a modicum of meaningful activity & hope, let's go straight for the jugular.

There is no way I am only going outside once a day, either. Especially as on the days that I work I'll be going to work & coming home in the dark, & lunch breaks don't happen, so I won't get out at all. I will go out as many times as I like on my days off. I think that's fair, given that my kids have been shafted, I won't be seeing my family for months again, & my job has been made impossibly difficult. Oh, & don't forget that my hair appointment has been cancelled.

(Apologies for the Grinch-like comments about Christmas. I don't mean to upset anyone further this morning. I had a heart-to-heart with DM just before this kicked off last night & we were already resigned to not seeing each other this Christmas. It's my elderly relatives in care homes I'm most upset about).

IheartNiles · 31/10/2020 09:39

I can’t even read that bloody coronavirus topic anymore. So depressing to hear lots of women demanding schools are shut.

Lockdowns protect the well off middle classes who can work from home in safe jobs. They throw the working classes under the bus. The latter either take all the risk in public facing jobs, commuting on public transport, while their kids are left at home to educate selves. Or lose their jobs and income altogether.

The problem with sites like this is they are dominated by wealthy protected women or the terrified clinically vulnerable. There are also a high proportion of teachers using the site who agitate to be back safely at home on full pay. It’s very difficult to get other views heard.

Exactly my thoughts, it'll be carnage in the shops if they close all Nov and open 1st Dec. I do all my Xmas shopping in Nov usually (I know, I know, at least it's not October). I'll get what I can done online this year but was still planning a shopping trip. People will either end up doing more online (not great for high street) or packing shops in dec (only good for covid).
bakingcupcakes · 31/10/2020 09:53

I've already done most of my Christmas shopping. I did it early because I was expecting everything to fall apart and I'm increasingly concerned there won't be any financial support when all our hours/pay gets cut. We aren't entitled to the new support scheme because takings recovered during summer. They're majorly down now because everyone's terrified again.

The potential lockdown news really got to me last night. Why is it always released late on a Friday? It really annoys me. That means we all have 2 days to stew over it waiting for the actual announcement. It's really wrong. Halloween Angry

However, it makes me glad that I've gone out of my way to do everything possible with DS whilst things have been open. I cancelled my holiday this week but we went out loads locally. Yesterday I took him swimming and it was excellent. Literally 8 people between 2 pools. It cost more than double the pre-covid price and we only got an hour but it was excellent. Much more fun than pre-covid so I've booked for us to go again this weekend.

Wanderings · 31/10/2020 09:54

@LivinLaVidaLoki I hope your DH is right: after all, it has been Saint Boris’s repeated strategy, and subtlety is not his strong point. He did it with the muzzles in shops, among with many other things.

Littlebelina · 31/10/2020 09:55

This middle class woman who can work from home (at least partly) wants schools to stay open. Ds has loved being back, seeing his friends (he was back partly in summer under key worker provision) and the routine. Kids need school, it's not just childcare (although that helps).

TheOrchidKiller · 31/10/2020 09:57

I'm going shopping in a bit. I feel the urge to get a few things (not sure what) to Make Christmas Less Miserable. But I don't really want to do it because we haven't done Hallow'een yet.

And to buy hair dye.

Think we may end up ordering stuff online & sending it to each other this year. I hate online shopping, I like to touch what I'm buying. I think I might also suggest a household secret santa (there's only 4 of us & the cat, so one of us will be getting Dreamies). Everything to be purchased from an essential shop only, of course.

I might just buy loads of fairy lights, just to cheer things up now.

I'm also a middle class woman who can work from home. But being able to go to work (for me) and school (for DS1 in particular) is vital for our mental health. I was due to see my mum next weekend but the headlines are scaring me now.

I've had fairy lights on our porch and garage since summer and they're staying up forever. I love them. The neighbors probably think I've lost it and they're probably right Smile

Checking in for a bit of (depressed) sanity...

I can’t face another lockdown... ds2 was told last week that his work placement (which was originally supposed to start on 23rd March Hmm) was going to go ahead after all - his mood has been much better since then - he actually went out of the house to see his friends for the first time in nearly a year and he’s been going for a run and to the gym. Now I suspect he’s going to crash right back down again

DD’s finally got a psychiatrist appointment for the end of November as her anxiety is now crippling (she’s having to drop one A-level and unless something changes drastically pretty soon I don’t rate her chances of being able to take any of her exams this summer). If that gets cancelled or moved to a phone appointment I won’t be able to cope.

And I’m waiting for an ultrasound - I’ve lost my appetite and am feeling full after eating a tiny amount - logically I know it’s probably stress but both my mum and my aunt died from ovarian cancer so I can’t help worrying about that.

I just feel like screaming FUCK FUCK FUCK
